..Scrolls..
I think if they have Scrolls in H4 they should only have one use and then disappear. Maybe allow a chance to scribe the scroll into your spell book or something?

They're good at first but after a while you don't need them. You can't even sell them or get any experience for them on the Altar of Sacrifice. So you just have to lug them around or pawn them off on some other hero.

...hmm, not a bad idea, not a bad idea at all...also, I think there should be some sort of a bartering post or something along with a market (or whatever they'll have) and design some sort of system in which you can actually sell off your artifacts and also be able to trade them for others...perhaps by setting a certain value for them so you can trade a certain amount of artifacts with an added value to match whatever you want to trade them for, but make them higher when it comes to purchasing some of the more powerful ones...

not bad indeed...
it kinda reminds me of the spell scrolls in Vampire: the Masquerade - Redemption, scrolls that enable you to cast one-shot spells, and then vanish into thin air... the abillity to write the spells into your book is a very nice touch... THUMBS UP!!!

The idea of writing the scrolls to the book could be like in ADND - The hero will have a chance to learn a spell, if he fails he just lost the sroll without any good. Maybe there should be a skill which improves that chance, and of cource the Arch-mage will have more chance to copy the spell than a Paladin.

I was thinking not so much of a skill but one of the character stats. Like the old Knowledge where one point would equal a 10% chance. This would still give magic users a greater chance to copy or use it and Spell power would use it to greater effect.

One use-spells are already in HoMM IV: potions will allow a hero or stack of creatures to cast a spell. Don't know about the learn thing. If it depends on skill level or knowledge (there is no knowledge in HoMMIV) it would be to easy, and probably also to cheap for magic users to learn new spells. If everybody has an equal chance to learn the spell this would add a lot of undesired randomness to the game, it would also increase the disadvantage of the not- able-to-learn-any-magic-barbarians.

Learning from a scroll
Makes sense to me. Maybe base it on your level of skill in that school, with higher level spells harder to learn. Something like this:
Basic - 30% 1st level only (you can't learn higher level spells at all).
Advanced - 40% 1st level, 30% 2nd level.
Expert - 50% 1st, 40% 2nd, 30% 3rd.
Master - 60% 1st, 50% 2nd, 40% 3rd, 30% 4th.
Grandmaster - 70% 1st, 60% 2nd, 50% 3rd, 40% 4th, 30% 5th.
This way it takes into account your skill without making it automatic for Grandmasters or nearly impossible for the beginners.

Ok, so you got the percentages all worked out, but how do you learn 'em at all? Each time you cast the spell? You'll just cast the spell until you learn it, so no need for percentages? Or do you destroy the scroll in an attempt to learn the spell? No-one's ever going to use that. It's simply to difficult to implement...

You can either cast the spell once or try to learn it. Either way, the scroll is used up. So it becomes a tough choice for high levels - do you save it for when you need it most, or do you take the risk of losing it to get the spell permanently?

How is everybody doing!! (..didn't want to start a new thread just to ask the question!)
I picked up "Pool of Radiance" last week so I've been busy.
It's a great one for RPG fans so pick it up while you wait for H4!!
