Don't like that idea (warning: rant inside)

I've just noticed that the town view has been altered to reflect its actual terrain, so if your town is in some ice plains, then you'll see a snowy town, unlike in previous Heroes where they always had the same background.

I personally don't like this idea, because each town loses an overall feel or "mood". In Heroes 3, you could identify with the towns easier. Inferno was associated with fire, Rampart with nature (grass, green pastures), Tower with snow, Stronghold with swamp, and so on. In Heroes 4, the towns lose that feel. The background no longer associates with the town, which means the town is identified by its buildings instead of an overall mood. The towns lose some identity, and uniqueness. Can you imagine an Inferno town in a snowy field?

I think this is a serious mistake. They should remove the multiple backgrounds and associate each town with a background like they did previously. Make it impossible to lay them on the wrong tileset. For instance an Inferno (not a town in the game, but just as an example) can only be placed on lava tiles. Or if placed on anything else would at least have a small radius of larva tile around it.

yes, maybe it is so... if they implement your second idea (towns only on specific terrain) there is no need to remove the "multiple backgrounds" feature... frankly I would prefer it this way...

BTW: Jenova, please read "Kuma's Tavern" pages 25+ and "Hexa's Quest" ...we could use an Elven lass like you...

1. Stronghold in a swamp? Apparently the 'identification' and 'mood' don't work that well.

2. There won't be an inferno town in HoMMIV so you don't have to worry about seeing them in a snowy field.

3. IMO it's a good developpement, it's a lot worse seeing a snowy patch in the middle of the desert or a bright sky underground. For most of the towns there isn't a problem anyway, an academy-town can be placed on grassy terrain just as well as a haven-town or a preserve-town. For those that seem a little strange like a necropolis on snowy plains or a preserve-town on lava, just imagine what the magic of that town would do to the terrain. So the necropolis would be in the middle of a frozen-desert, with a grey sky, whereas the preserve-town would be in a very lively, bright snowy landscape. A preserve-town on lava would simarily add a very lively touch to that terrain.

I have to say I think multiple backgrounds is a great idea. It was rather ridiculous when the tower was in the middle of the desert, but somehome it was cold and snowy there.

Actually, I realy like it! It's more realistic, because towns don't have some magic aura that make the land they're built on become the class' native terrain do they?

True.. but you have to admit an inferno town would only make sense on lava terrain.. To have any town on any terrain would ruin the overall theme of each.. Thinking back on H2 and H3, I just wouldn't be able to imagine the towns if they had multiple backgrounds. The Sorceress town was very colorful and beautiful.. and had opera music to go with it. Just imagine that town placed in a desert.. It just wouldn't feel the same.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. But since towns are just a (symmetrically placed) collection of buildings on variable terrains, they do start to feel generic after a while.
