Age of Wonders 2
The Age of Wonders series is fantastic and absolutely a 'must see' for any fans of the HoMM series. Age of Wonders 2 is a the better of the 2 games and though I haven't tried the expansion for it, I here good things about it.
So, are there any AoW fans here?

I played AoW 2 once... make it twice
It is a great game, but I never had the power to finish it, it's just sooooo long... I always stopped playing a bit after the middle (what was that? air magic?).

It could be air magic, I forget. It is a very long game .
The gameplay is well worth looking into this game for anyone else who reads this thread. It's prabably in the bargain bin and very easy to acquire.

I've never played Age of Wonders II, only the sequel Shadow Magic which is verry simular. It's very nice and fun to play. Still I also have dificulties finishing a single game and I have even more dificulties not cheating.

I always wondered if Shadow magic was worth buying or not. If by cheating you mean reloading the game again and again after realizing too late that you've been outmaneuvered or outplayed by the A.I. welcome to the club. It seems the only way to win for me, on some of the scenarios anyway.

No, by cheating I ment using the ctrl-shift cheats to achieve instantbuilding and get a huge amount of mana and gold to finance my stuff. Usualy I get one ro two highlevel armies, so I'm able beat the AI by brute force.

It's a great game. There ae a lot of races and spells to play with, and it has great multiplayer potential.

So how does it play compared to heroes series?
I'm looking at the age of wonders games and they seem very similar to heroes but with more creatures and more strategical depth. Am I missing something? Does it take too long?

Well it as a TBS so of course there is a certain likeness to the heroes series. But aside from that it is a very different game.
The role of the heroes is more like in the warlords series - mighty warriors or mages who help you greatly in battles, but are not essential for victory.
The magic system is very different - you are a powerful wizard who can cast spells whenever and almost wherever you like, assuming you have enough mana.
The diplomatical system is a bit more complicated than in heroes.
It's a bit hard to explain it like that, better try it yourself, if you like TBS you won't regret it.

Thanks for the answer...the powerful magic is appealing to me. I never like warlords much because you don't fight the battles. I've been reading reveiws and in shadow magic you do fight the battles.
My impressions is that it is more complicated than heroes. I think I'll try it out.

Of course you fight the battles, what I meant was that the hero is just a powerful unit, maybe an analogy to the Heroes IV heroes is better than warlords.
