Some good ideas!
Ok. Here are some ideas i gathered from my friends and what i thought myself:
1)Airships. They would need to land on a 3x3 square and there would be another level for them, sky. That means, that if you enter a skyship, the skyship rises to the next level. If you don't have a place where to land, you will fall and your hero will loase half of its creatures. If you fall on a mountain or forests or other objects, your hero dies.
2)Boat to Boat missels. These are good when you are attacking another boat. Both have the cannons. They should work like catapults. Also, there should be like 10 different kind of boats with different capacity.
3)Boat to Castle attacks. This should be very good against the water town. Also, you could attack a castle that is 1-2 squares away from the shore.
3)Heroes with no castles. It pis**d me of that if you lose all your castles you got 1 week to capture a town. I say that sucks. I say no castles needed for heroes to survive.
4)Week editor. In the editor, there should be an option to choose, when will what week come. E.g: week of the squirrel. Double produce of squirrels. This is just and idea. I think you understand what i mean...

Disagree.
I disagree to you ideas, they are too complicated and unrealistic. Heroes shouldn't survive without a town and not because of realism, but because its the HOMM spirit, how many times you had to chase all of the 100 enemy's heroes with your one super hero to defeat him? and the only solution was to conquer his towns and wait a week, so if heroes would survive without towns, the game would be impossible to win. A week editor is a good option, but the other ones are bad, sorry.

I agree with Mystery, the week editor idea is good, but the other ones are not. The existing boats are OK. There is no need to fight with canons cuz the two sides decide to fight when the boats are close to one another (the existing thing), which I really like. There is no need to complicate things...

oops!
Yeah there was a typing error in my idea. I think the option of heroes surviving without a town should be in the editor. I mean there are two choices:
hero doesn't survive without a castle
hero survives without a castle for 1/2/3/4/5/endless weeks.
What do you think about that?

Actually, I like this one. Attacking by sea could allow the attacking hero to fight only the garrison hero, and to avoid the one standing at the door of the castle. This would make boats more useful. Right now, they are just some kind of specialized resource gatherers.

From a map-making stand-point, Heroes being able to survive w/o a castle would be an excellent OPTION... one that would be toggled in the map editor, or even as a "special ability" of aa hero. As far as the sanctuary abuse problem is concerned, it's a moot point... maps where this option would be "on" are quest maps... single player maps of "kill the dragon", "find the treasure", etc. when you don't want the hero to have the back-up of a castle.
Also the "week of..." editor is a must (including the effects of plagues), and I too posted about this in another thread.
The "sky ship" won't really work in homm, but the idea of a boat with a turret is interesting... perhaps it is a "ship upgrade" available to only a particular town... as far as attack castles, I'm afraid I must disagree... homm dosen't use artillary.

Hey You! I`m Matthy`s friend and some of those ideas were mine too, so I got to tell that I really like them. Ok skyships would be maybe too powerful, but i talked about them in another thread. What I want to say is that- when you talk about realism then how to you put 300 huge black dragons and 1430 pikemen on a little pathetic ship? And it would be great if You could destroy opponents ship with catapults on your ship!
Well about skyships: they could be really hard to find (in a special building). Cost much (50 wood, 10 sulfur 30000 gold)and You have only a 20% of chance to get Your army over a mountain range or forest with no losses. That means that You could fly on oceans and clear land with no probem, but flying over a mountain or other normally impassable area, you will probably loose a lot of Your army (airship accident). you could also be able to learn skyship navigation secondary skill (air navigation). And skyships could attack heroes and towns so only archers could shoot at it and it could only attack ground with archers too (if they don`t have airship catapult - it allows you to shoot your enemies with rocks. it`s like an artillery - you can buy it from airship factory). If the enemie destroys your air tank with archers or magic, you instantly loose the ship and most of your army dies. Then the battle continues on ground.
About ships (more): They could have 4 different skills:
1. attack (if you have a ship catapult)
2. defense (against archers and other catapult)
3. Speed. The movement would not only be influenced by lighthouses and navigation skill, but also the type of the ship would count.
4. Capacity. How many troops can you carry. And every ship would carry much more level 1 creatures than level 4.
Isn`t this realistic?
Ships attacking towns:
Ship is actually like a castle too - only way to get in it is to destroy it`s sides or wait until the crew lands by landing bridge.
Now for story maps it would be very good to set the time of a hero to travel around without haveing a castle. You all have played those good story-maps (RPG maps) I hope...
...and I suppose that noone is against the week-editing option... It cannot be bad, could it?

No for the skyships: you already have artifacts and magic to fly? What for then the skyship?just for redundancy?
No for cannons and attacking castles that way. It changes completely the tactics of a battle.
As about different levels of boats...if it's about reality, of course a boat can't carry tons of dragons...the boat you see on the map is only a representation of the fleet!

Just as a minor point of information, the 'Fly' spell is apparently gone from Heroes 4, along with DD.
As far as the airship idea is concerned, there's a thread about it back on page 18.
Two threads about different ship/boat ideas, on page 16 and page 22.

the skyship area is another level on the map if you understand me, just as underground but its in the sky and there could be some specific stuff just for sky.
