Best starting heroes
I just noticed that some people select wrong hero as starting.
I will share some well known facts, as a help for novice players.
Assumptions: we wanna play random map with more or less standard rules
1) Tyris
Tactics + generally good skill tree. Cavaliers can be easily upgraded to Champions by visiting Stables (Champions with tactics will smash majority of shooters)
2) Ivor
up to 12 elves from start. Archery (for elves) and Offence for all other army. +1 speed for elves due to speciality
3) Mephala
Armorer speciality. Mephala can take out big armies even with 4-6 unicores.
4) Tazar
Armorer speciality. Same as above.
5) Crag Hack.
Offence speciality. Very powerful especially at week2-3.
6) Shakti
up to 120 troglodites + Tactics + Offence. Shakti can open griffin conservatory or fight for Level7 dwelling on day1.
7) Gunnar/Kyrre/Dessa
Too powerful for their Logistics speciality, that's why often banned (not allowed in game)
Normally i start with:
Tyris on Blockbuster.
Ivor/Crag Hack/Mephala on Balance.
Tyris/Crag Hack/Shakti on Jebus
Perhaps this thread is duplicate, if so then delete it

Normaly I start with Random town and random hero.
But Tyris would never be my first choice though.
If I play with Castle, I would not take her as starting hero, coz of (at least) 2 reasons:
1. I will look for any other but Knight as main (low chance for earth/log).
2. I would rather chose Valeska as starting hero, coz she brings some archers, which could help a lot in the beginning, especially if no archers prebuilt.
Even on Jebus, Crag and stronghold is pretty strong...

Vote for Orrin
Quote: blockbuster/balance/jebus - what are these? maps?
These are editions for Random Map Generator's. Roughly speaking these are text files with instructions for the game on some generic preferences people have on maps they want to play. If you want to learn more about rmg's check my post here for further references.
However, the easiest way to realize what an RMG does is to visit Wizards and Warriors > Downloads > Maps > Random Templates and download a generator. Note that on the right side of the RMG name there is a rough description of the generator (those "rough" instructions about your preferences we were saying earlier ...) as well as the acceptable sizes (+ number of players) for the random map to be generated and finally the author's name. When you download such a file (RMG = Random Map Generator) place it in your Data folder (normally under Program Files -> 3DO -> Heroes III) but name it as rmg.txt. You are almost done and ready to generate a random map now according to the instructions given on this rmg.txt file you placed on your Data folder. However, if your version of Heroes is NOT the Complete one you should verify you have the latest version of your game. So, in order to finalize the procedure (and realize the new potential of the game ... ) follow the first 4 easy steps provided by angelito here.
Now you are done! Next time you start Heroes III, on the map selection screen there is going to be a button on your upper right hand corner allowing you to generate a random map. I believe the options found there are self explanatory (make sure you check valid map sizes as these are shown on the link above, otherwise you won't be able to generate a map though you have configured your game perfectly ... )
---------------
Back on topic,
If I make a choice for Castle, then this is ALWAYS Orrin cause of his Archery specialty which has an effect on all of my range-shooting units as well.

Sometimes you should consider choosing a hero that's just cool, and not powerful.
I dunno much about what he can do now, but Sandro has always been my favorite hero.

I'm going to be flamed and called a noob for saying this, but:
Solmyr is an excellent starting hero, you need relatively few troops, and then you can chain your way through. On random maps they are many wells scattered around the place...take MGs and golems with you, place your chains so if they hit your own units, they hit the golems
Lacus is also an excellent starting hero, due to his advanced tactics at beginning... this minimises your losses while fighting ranged creatures
Bron is alright to start with, basilisks are a great help in the beginning for fortress
there are many other very good heroes to start with... it'd be a painfully long and tedious job to name them all

It all depends on the map - how fast it is. If its slow - no question Mephala, Taz and Cragy are number one choises.
On Fast maps Ivor, Tyris, Shakti could be very usefull. You could even consider Jenova providing you play at 200%.
Angelito - i will disagree about your opinion on Tyris. You are right about the low possibility of earth, but with stables you could make up for the lack of logisticks. And as SAG said - the tactics could help you to speed up you game and development

Wystan makes a great start hero because if ya have no lizards prebuilt in your town you can build flies for scout speed anyway and still have plenty of shooters for day 1.
Korbac makes a great start hero because if ya do have Lizards prebuilt ya can make wyverns and still be guaranteed some flies for scout speed day 1.
Ciele makes a great start hero because of the amount of damge she can do as a scout week 1.
Valeska makes a great start hero for her archers.
Tyris is usefull for her tactics early on yes but forget about her champion speciality because we are talking about "start heroes" and what use is that specialty at the beggining of the game?
Ivor of course is the best start hero for rampar ,more elves!!
All logistcs heroes are usefull at all stages of the game (lets not forget pyre and monere for that extra week1 movement).
Any hero that starts with a ballisa can be usefull week1 (even tent heroes if ya find one in tavern because their tent can be used to attract some enemy damage,week1 every creature ya have is generally needed)
Galthran makes a good choice for the skellies, necro are weak for the 1st few days and need all the critters they can get.
My number 1 choice for a day 1 start hero would be shakti for the amount of sheer damage he can make with nothing more than his start units.

Some immense points are missing!
Tyris can let even the cavaliers cross the complete battlefield on level1 against 2 hex shooters !!! (Speed 7 + 1grass + 1speciality +2 hexfields +1 "a"button).
Same thing can Lacus do with simple Waterelementals!
And what is better then to be able to take out shooters??? NOTHING!
So Tyris is definately a good hero to choose on a random, same goes for Lacus.
Of course only as starters, try to find a better main during the game.
Ciele is of course a good scout in the beginning. But Luna is even better: With fire shield speciality can even take out a pack of Behemots very early in the game! So take her every time and get used to it when and how to use her!

re: "autocombat" (a bit offtopic though)- actually i never used it. Can it be classified as "game feature" or as "game bug"? Another example of game bug: selling arts higher than they cost - do you sell them? I never do.

by the way i would switch to Orrin if he comes at Tower/Dungeon's tavern ;-)

In comparison to Crag everything else suck but people do tend to play more with castle and rampart rather than stronghold, so some of the best choises are Orrin and Ivor
