Well, in the Hammers of Fate, the new units that are introduced, the renegade units, are not really the alternate upgrades of the Haven units, in the sense that they cannot be purchased in town. As such, they are closer to neutrals then being part of the Haven faction.

Quote:
Can you explain the rider+steed system a bit more? Is it combining existing creatures or sort of an upgrading system?

To me, it is both.

In the current system, we have a one to one upgrade for the creatures. Example: Archers --> Marksmen (Tier 2)
        Footman --> Squires  (Tier 3)
Griffins --> Imperial Griffins (Tier 4)

In a new system, we may do without the upgrades (note: MAY). So the new unit will have improved stats, and probably combined abilities.

Example: Archers + Griffins --> Gryphon bowman (Tier 5 equivalent)
abilities: Flying, Shooter, scattered shots, unlimited retaliation?
Footman + Griffins --> Gryphon Knights (Tier 6 equivalent)
abilities: Flying, unlimited retaliation, large shield, bash?

These are just some possibilities, and admitably not the best. Of course they need not be higher tier creatures. And the abilities of the new creature need not be a combination of the original (I think they shouldn't but I am lazy to think of possible new abilities at the moment). Let us discuss on the possibilities of intra-faction "training" before we look into inter-faction "training" feasibility?

interesting ideea although I can't help thinking that it somehow spoils the fun in the game. I actually like the fact that every creature has weaknesses and strenghts; it's challenging to use a creature so that you make the most from its strenghts.

making combination of troops that complement eachother is like creating an ubertank that's impossible to counter. griphon knight?..  there are just too many abilities man... LVL 6 with protection from archers + unlimited retal AND FLYER? the ultimate melee unit...

That looks nice, but I still didn't get the answer I wanted to hear.
What I wanted to know was how do you create this Griffin Knight? I see three possibilities:
1 - you have in the army a footman and a griffin and you simply combine them into a griffin knight.
2 - you have the buildings of a footman and a griffin and you are able to buy the griffin knight.
3 - you have a griffin + building of the footman OR footman and building of the griffin, and you upgrade your creature into a griffin knight.

I prefer the third way, but I want to know what you had in mind.

@Ra2
I see your point, that's why cantaresg said (and I agree with him) that the abilities of thenew unit should not be a combination of the abilities of basic units.

Or have a separate building that does the upgrade. The first and the second method provide too easy access to an upgrade. Easily imbalanced. The third method is viable but I prefer that you need to build an additional building to provide for the upgrade, much like you need to build a separate building for training or upgrading a dwelling. Some things that actionjack proposed in his new thread "Additional Upgrade System" may be useful too?

Definitely combining abilities is out. Some tracts may stay, but i prefer new abilities for each new creature created this way.

So what do you think?

I think I finally understand what you mean, just to be sure and finally end this phase:
To get a combined creature you need two basic creatures in a town with a special upgrade building in it, right?
If I'm wrong please correct me.
If I'm right then we should move on to what creatures we can combine, is it only steed + rider? In that case some factions may have problems e.g. Necro and Academy. Then again we already said that some units in those two factions can be mutated/reconstructed.
What do you think?

For now, I prefer to rider + steed system, but there will be a problem with Academy which currently has no possible candidate for steeds. So for the Academy, they may work with reconstruction instead?

To summarise (for the time being), we have:

Haven - Griffins
Slyvan - Unicorns
Dungeons - Hydra
Inferno - Nightmare
Necropolis - Bone dragons (?)

Frankly, this seems rather imbalanced now as the steeds fall under different tiers (but generally 4 - 5 tiers).

Well there are much more riders than steeds so we can set a combined creature tier and stick to it.
For example footman is tier 3 and griffin is tier 4 so the the combined tier would be tier 7.
Let's see what we can get with other factions...
Sylvan - unicorn (5) + blade dancer (2) - great.
Inferno - nightmare (5) + demon (2) - a bit strange but acceptable.
Dungeon - hydra (5) + blood fury (2) - now that doesn't look good...
Necropolis - I think that the dragon is too powerful to be combined so maybe we can create some sort of abomination, don't know what exactly...
Academy - again some sort of reconstruction... maybe golem (3) + gargoyle (2) = flying golem (5) ?

That will be a good feature, like the fighting heroes...

I think that:

Vampire + Blood Fury + Blade Dancer + Archmage = Elven Vampire Wizard (hehehe)
Lich + Bone Dragon = Dracolich
Zombie + Iron golem = Mumy
Titan + Iron Golem + Fire Dragon (from HoF)= Impeerial Stepper (from Star Wars) (hehehehehe)
Skeletion + Elven Vampire Wizard = Lich

The point of combining creatures is not to take two completely different creatures and get a mutant out of them, but to make a realistic combination, e.g. Footman + Griffin = Griffin Knight (a man riding a griffin, NOT a man with a griffin's head).

I think this feature is somewhat besides the point of the game. Most importantly, I can't see what this adds in terms of gameplay - other than that we have a rider, combine it with a footman, to get ... another rider? Hmmm. Am I missing something?

True, this feature is not crutual, it's just something we tried to add in our free time. The point of it was to add some more possibilities into the creature line-up and create more variations for the player to choose from.

Hmmm... It's a great idea!! =]

There's only one problome:
How will you do it?
With magic? With special building?

Well, I think the best way is to do it as a skill of the heroes in a new race.
But if you do it, you gotta make sure that the combinition isn't very very stong, to keep the game balance.

Good Luck. [=
I realy hope you'll find how.
It's sounds great.

Hey Genielord liked it, well this must be great, but your right this is something not essential, just in free time, hmm all good things come to an end.
