How to attract more people into H3

Problem statement:

if nothing changes, H3 will loose good players one by one and more or less soon there will be no players at all . I still love this game and will do my best to keep it alive and even more interesting.

I would divide 2 tasks:

1) Attract more people to COME to GameSpy to chat and play the game

2) Raise expirience and skills of coming "noobs" into "experts".

Liophy proposed to make explicit tutorial section:
Quote:
SAG. If you want to atract new players there must be very explicit tutorial section. Something like the library here, but more graphic, with hundreds of screens, and even videous (like short movie how you fight a crypt week 1). You know - in recent days people are spoiled, they dont read unless they are very interested. And if we are talking about new player we must presume they are not that interested in the begining. So we must make it interesting and easy for them - multimedia - pictures, screens, step by step tutorials, movies, charts...

Agree that it may help.

Homm3 tournament may attract players, so any proposals about how to improve tourney - are very welcome. Maybe "prestige" points for attracting new players? Also, I need your help - going to translate tourney into more languages (BG, RO, PL, DE, FR, RU).

Perhaps 2v2 games will raise expirience and skills of "noobs" - when playing 2 veterans vs 2 noobs?

Anyway, keep sharing ideas here. I hope that topic is important enough.

I know they had such a tourney on Bastards some years ago. 2vs2 allied games. 1 vet + 1 newbie in one team. This is the best way to bring a newbie to a higher level. And to get him/her more addicted of course.

Count me in for the german translation.

Its good to have more complete user profile - with pictures, personal info (but just place to write, but fix questions - wich football team do you support, fav hobbies etc),

You must have good stats page. Like - for every game to submit not only wich town you played, but wich was the starting hero, wich one was the hero for the main fight... Probabbly screenshot of the hero ( to look his prim, second skills and armie).

I think it would be very interesting and inspiring to play a 2vs2; you get to see exactly how other people play.

BTW: I guess I would be the n00b , my online experience is near zero.

I like angelito's idea. Now... where and how do we get the abovementioned noobs?

You are right here Anders.
But I really can't stand it, when new guys come to GS and start to insult everyone without knowing or even having played anyone. Those people are not worth to be tought the basics of online games if they even don't know the basics of how to treat other people.
But thank god there are other new players aswell....

Just for the record, I've started playing a few TCP/IP games with Russ. (he always kicks my @$$) So I'm no longer a virgin.

I have a GS account, but I don't have arcade installed on my new comp yet. And it looks like I didn't write down my user name, so I might have to sign up again.

1) i think that 1 allied game should be counted as 4 separate games: each player from winners' team should get win over each opponent.

2) no resource sharing should be allowed in 1 vet + 1 newbie allied games (because noob will become just "big gold/resource mine" for veteran and will not learn much about how to play independently.

Resource sharing is a big part of allied game style though.
Maybe rule should be more like: Vet attacks only vet, newbie only newbie...?

Not to attack anybody, on the contrary.. to provide one more perspective that may or not be helpful.. I don't play online, and even though playing with other people sounds like a blast, there's one sole reason that keeps me from it: Playing games that are over within a month just doesn't appeal to me.
I realize that playing online must take much longer per turn than vs. the computer, but it seems that if everything is just a rush to break out and take the opponent's castle as quickly as possible, a lot of the game would be left out of the picture.

Just one newb's view.

I know where u r coming from, but it is not quite true. I was thinking about the same problem when I entered the online world of H3. I always thought: When they only play 4 weeks, they won't reveal more than 15% of the map. How boring is that? So many more things to do...etc...
1st thing is, online random maps are played on templates. They are created for human vs human games.
2nd, the different playstyle allows online players to scout and clear much more of their area in shorter times. (Many heroes from the beginning, chaining, etc...)
When u play single player vs comp, u normally play 200% to make the comp as strong as possible. 200% makes the game more difficult resource wise for u, that's for sure.
In online games, there is no need for 200% games. You normaly play 130% to make the AI as strong as possible when fighting wandering stacks. No higher difficulty needed, it would just lengthen the game.

Try to get such allied games going with a vet, and see what happens. It is a new world of gameplay. You discover things u would nevre have thought of. And u will face real challenges then...

Jkwo,

1) regarding result-orientation or rush strategy .

i will do comparison with soccer:
imagine that one game always lasts for 12 hours instead of 90 minutes AND both teams play ball on their side of the field for 11,5 hours and try to make a goal only at last 30 minutes...

would you prefer to watch such soccer game? or play it?

result-orientation is key thing in life, not only in game

2) you can find (or do yourself) random template that will always take 2 month for first meeting. You should just set very strong guards between your zones and set richness to average or minimum in order to avoid Utopias...

there is another idea. use the core of devoted heroes players to make really big, interesting and dynamic forum for general topics. Thus you will be able to atract people, who are not interested initialy in the game. In the proces as they see the comitment and the passion of the regular players they may get interested and try the game.

My input is quite similar to this. I read some of the things here and am awe struck. It must be quite a feat to accomplish such things. But I feel the game would lose its appeal if it came down to just the banks being in different positions and such. I'm up for learning and don't getting my butt kicked if I can learn from it. If you dealt me a hand of cards and immediately declared that you have won, I wouldn't at all feel like the game was rewarding enough to play.

If nothing else, the flaunting of how powerful some of these guys are will leave players like me in "huddle in my corner while trying to apply strategies I've read until one day I can beat them." The problem with that mentality is that "one day" never arrives and you just have a bunch of guys that don't mind losing to better their game afraid to even set foot into the ring with Tyson.

As for what was mentioned in the first post, I would LOVE to see, for example, a video of a Crypt being taken week 1 and other such reference materials.

re:

Go players have an interesting solution for opponents at different level:
They give some bonus to the weaker player to balance the game.

I don't know if it would be ok for a veteran to give +1 gold mine for a newbie. We could collect some unbalanced maps saying the level of handicap.
If You agree, that You are better by 3 level, let's play a "+3" class map. If You still win by 5:0, let's continue on a "+5" class map..
Sooner or later we will know the appropriate level by just compairing the Tournament rankings. Or at least, You will know your good old fellow's +- level, compaired to Yours.

Just an idea, am not familiar with online play.. I would need at least +6 boost against SAG.
