The Modding Wiki

Having a collaborative wiki to gather modding techniques and references is an idea that we had for some time, but I never had the time to make it happen. Under VokialBG's impulse with his tips and tricks (many thanks to him), it was high time I did, so here it is.

Instead of sticking EliteKill's Modding guide for Dummies, I've transferred the texts to the "Modder's Workshop Wiki", with some tweaks already, and I hope we'll improve and develop it in the coming days.

http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/modding_wiki/

You'll have to register to edit the pages (use your HC nickname so that we know who is who). This is as experimental for me as it is for HC, but I'm confident we can make it work, and build a really great reference for all modders out there.

Use this forum to discuss or comment the contents of the wiki. If you're not comfortable with the wiki syntax or organization, you can post the contents here as well, and I'll make sure it gets in the right place.
Also, I'm sure we already have useful information here in this forum that deserves being featured in the wiki: you're welcome to dig and notify me of any such worthy content.

Good wiki to all!

Thank you very much! Easy to understand even for newbies like me.

Oh, a note about the music changing part:

Simply RENAMING an mp3 file to an ogg file will get the game to accept it and play it, dispite it not being technically converted to ogg.

You have to register first.
At the moment, I do not have the time to bypass the login system and use HC login instead. So both are separate. Sorry.

Login page, below the login box.
It wasn't there when you tried, because of a file permission incorrectly set, that wouldn't let new users register. It's fixed now. Let me know if you have other problems with it.

I unstickied the "Working on Modding Tutorial" thread:
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=18587

There were a few good explanations and references there, which clearly deserve to be in the wiki, if anyone has time to copy them. Until then, follow the links.

If you notice or contribute any content here that would have its place in the wiki (and don't have the time or knowledge to put it there yourself), leave a note here.
Actually, if you make an addition to the wiki, you can leave a note here as well, so that everybody knows.

Daystar, to be notified of changes, you have a Subscribe button at the bottom of each topic, when you're logged in. It's only a per item notification, but it's a start.

I recommend that any contribution on the wiki be notified here anyway by the author, so that:
- everyone here can be informed, not only registered wiki users
- I can reward any contribution worth QPs, as if it had been made here

If you wish to be more active on the wiki and keep a closer eye on it, HCM me.

@Flash: can you start a new thread with your problem, explaining what you do in your Findan example?

Okay yeah works now.

Also, I have written a very basic tutorial for texture modding.  I'll keep working, but if anyone wants to help with syntax and stuff, that would be great.

I noticed that not all commands are listed in the Wiki. I guess they are copied from the scripting manual? While exploring the campaign scripts of the original game, I came across a few commands that are not listed there, like "GiveBorderguardKey(player_id, key_type)"; the arguments are the same as the "HasBorderguardKey" command.

Hmm, interesting, that would mean there are some "hidden" commands, that they used in the campaigns, while not giving them in the manual.

Yes, there are.
Actually, I pasted the list of commands from the manual to get it started (but I didn't have time to add all the descriptions yet). The idea is that it can be developed from there with additional commands/comments.

I'll see if I can give a hand with that, once TotE is out. I already figured out the format for a command or two that comes with TotE (gotta love it that they work in the demo ).
