Heroes V = Trunbased Warcraft
Everything seems copied:
Markal = Kel'thusad
Both established secret cults in a human kingdom.
Nicolai = Arthas
Just look at the hair...
Renegades = Scarlet Crusade
This one is so obvious that is isn't even funny. The demon Balnasir turns to the demoness Biara. Both mask themselves as humans and have overzealous followers who sees demons or undead in everyone, except in their leader.
Godric = Uther
Both get killed because of their common sense.
Agrael/Raleag = Medivh
Running around an warning folks who doesn’t believe them an cerate unorthodox alliances.
Do you need more proof. The game itself is great, but in the campaign, Nival just copy things from Warcraft.

Not JUST warcraft. Many of the ideas are used in other movies/games is it's like a big cliche brought together.

Is this from Warcraft 1? I only played Warcraft 2 and 3, but I don't remember the characters. Well, my bad memory could also be the reason.
The headline "Heroes V = Trunbased Warcraft" is very misleading since just the story and characters in both games are perhaps similar, but not the "real" game, I mean game mechanics etc...

the characters from w3 were way better..
say, arthas.. one of my favorite hero of all fantasy games and books.. I dunno why, perhaps that he was really "cool" in his vileness as a death knight. I like that style - he didn't care for a damn thing, did whatever he wanted and crushed all morals without hesitation. Pure, great evil which I really like. Chaotic evil
However, I agree that heroes5 is based on w3.. demons invade the lands (burning legion anyone?), a king is turned undead (arthas anyone) and so on, and so on.. yeah.
Too bad I really love WC3, so it doesn't matter much to me.

Darn BL-fan... Viva Dark lady Sylvanas!
But if I play Heroes V, I don't want to think about the hated Scarlet crusaders when I play the secon Haven campaign. Annoying...

It would be interesting to trace modern mythology. I know a lot of inspiration has come from J.R.R. Tolkein. Tolkein designed the Lord of the Rings to be a popular mythology (England didn't have much of one at the time). Orcs, Elves, Trolls, Dwarves, Necromancers, Wizards, Wrights, Wraiths, Halfings, Treants, Wolves, Eagles, Knights, Rangers, Giant Spiders, Demons (Belrogs), Cavaliers, magical artifacts, and runes all come together in this series. Obviously D&D took many of these concepts. From there many, many games have been made. Heroes may not be stealing from warcraft. They are just both stealing from the same lineage of modern mythology.

Oh c'mon... I'm getting really tired of all that...
If you look hard enough you'll find connection with whatever you like...
Demons invading human lands? Oh, so in Heroes 3 it were humans who invaded the demons? Yes, the demons in HOMM 3 didn't come from the ground but neither did the burning legion.
Nicolay=Arthas? WTF!?! Nicolay was a fine king who was raised against his will! Arthas was just corrupted.
Agrael=Medivh? Oh, so let's forget that the idea of a prophet whm nobody believed was created in ancient Greece and her name was Kassandra.
The thing is, there are so many fantasy games and books now that it's very hard to do something that has been NEVER done before, so there will always be some similarities.

Just like Elvin said, ideas are not just taken from Warcraft. There's also a considerate ammount of things taken from Warhammer (grim raiders for example are a painfully obvious copy of Cold One knights, as is the entire Dark Elf faction actually. Blade dancers are also TOTALLY same like those from Warhammer, just like many other things), Disciples (the entire dwarven faction for example) and more. The point is that everyone plays mostly Warcraft so they're starting to connect everything only to it.

besides, those that see similarities with WarCraft make the mistake of including WoW in it, while in fact its more of an alternate universe

now i come to think of it, their are hardly any original storylines in fantasy games. its often X is invading Y so Z intervened, Z was an enemy of Q so Q allied with X, W saw that this could mean they got closer to their goals so allied with Q and X, meaning that, to stop W, R intervened. the conflict splited out into the land of the K so the K had to protect their homeland. however K's enemy, L, saw this as weakening their front so attacked. the enemy that L had previously been engaged in was F so F joined the frey. J just fought for the hell of it!
alot of fantasy storylines, i have realised are based on the first world war!

Hard to find something original in this genre, no matter how you look at it something similar will already have been done. If you have seen the ones that are used as a source of inspiration you pretty much can guess how other scenarios will go or what the plot twist will be. Just think of Eragon, is there ANYTHING that can surprise you? Hardly. I've read about movie-book comparison and while the book IS more complex it still is lacking. There is still hope that new original works will be released but unfortunately this genre is everburgeoning and you'd have to search through all this mess to find the interesting ones. So far I don't really mind as long as they are not too obvious or have a new twist or interesting characters.

The storyline i think is more taken from: HoMM3, or just the backbone is... Then this storyline takes you even longer out in the woods! But the storyline is for me not a known one? I don't remember that anyone has made a storyline like this? No other then HoMM3...
The creatures, Heroes and all that seems to be a mixture of all kind of Fantasy ... Warcraft, LOTR, Warhammer and so on.... Nothing new, this just means that Nival had trouble being creative and that i why i think they took a chance with the gameplay and new looks ...

Yeah, you're absolutely right. Warhammer was my first association as I've seen HV for the first time. I asked myself: WAR DANCERS??? In Heroes??? I thought it's "Warhammerish" idea. The same as I saw dark elves in Dungeon fraction.
But before I played full version I played also Demo. So I couldn't belive my eyes when I saw Clerics looking like Priests of Sigmar.
It's obvious that some simialities are unavoidable but it looked for me as normal plagiarism.
Not if I have something against it. IMO it looks great (especially Clercs from beta, nowadays they look... weird).
Maybe that's because I love WFRP...

mmmmm. quite right.
but..
the Agrael concept as a demon outcast is loosely based on an ancient indian mythology known as Ramayana (remember that i came from thailand and familiar with that). where in the storyline of the "Demon" side... a demon warlord made an unpleasant properchy and solutions to the Demon King (Thodsakan... for thai names) the prediction was, Thodsakan will lead Long-Ka kingdom to ruins if declare war against Rama (and his monkey legions!), the solution is return Si-Da to Rama and form a truce.... Thodsakan went angry and casted a demon seer (Pi-pek) out of the capitol. later on Pi-pek joined Rama's forces (though with uneasy feelings as he had demonic heritage), aiding him to fight Thodsakan with intelligences and tactics.
For Agrael's case it's similar as he initially fled an enraged knight of the Empire only to find out that he was declared "the Traitor" (with no obivious reasons beyond the sovereign's jealous on Agrael's charisma and power) by the Sovereign.... at this point. he had lost everything. power, prestige, and followers... only his survival instinct remains... and he was forced to fight the hell out of everything. only to find the way to the safest place... the place that no single demons seek refuge (but... the likes of Sovereign wants to destroy/rule/corrupt)

well,every fantasy game is connected to some myth thingie,so they're all simillar,and all the units are too,the reason u play diff games isn't for the looks the looks or the story ( cause the let's face it,eventually the story will be boring),u play diff games for diff styles,strategies,heroe's (they maybe simillar but the abilities aren't) and so on...
so it doesn't really matter about the looks,or stories,it's about the whole idea of the game
