Whatever's growing in my yard...
but that's besides the point. Theoretically, battle griphs are kinda like tanks. They hav a very high health attribute and their ability is dangerous when considered as a melee target.

Not if you use Battle griffin, battle dive isn't always (almost never in my case) usefull.

true I won't deny that they have good tanking stats within their tier, and they actually probably make pretty good tanks but in my opinion they're much better off not used as tanks considering growth and cost, especially when squires do a better job.

Quote: gryphs suck at tanking what are you smoking?
nothing, but like i have been said before,in my option "tanky" creature is tough and DAMAGE DEALING so in this case, battle are tanky, ancient treant fails in dmg, killing only hordes lvl1-3 creatures.
@dark shadow you mean rush dive

oh please haven sp and knowledge suck too much to make vampirism worth getting. though I guess if you really went all out and got dark knight+twilight it might be worth it but then you'd still have like 40 mana max if you're lucky enough to find a +knowledge item.
edit: also you'd waste like 6 or 7 skill levels for vampirism on your gryphs, I'd rather have flaming arrow+triple lista w/those points. But this is making me think now, has anyone tried preparation+vamp w/gryphs?

Vamp is a good spell, it can be used on other units too ya know..... Seraphs, *shivers*.
But if your gryphs is the last unit standing, i think it would the exelent tank with vamp.
Why? Life leach upon attack + it will relitate on all enemy's that does not got "No enemy relitation". It happend to me once, its painfull to figth........

Well, if you get vamprism and preperation on battle griffins it will be fun.
Preperation requires Stand Your Ground, that means your battle griffins will become indestructable when he is defending.

I think obsidian gargoyles make a wonderful tank in beginning and mid game due to their extremely high hit points, defense and growth rate/cost. Even when you use stacks of 1, these little buggers are stubbornly resistant and EXCELLENT protectors of my gremlins with Havez.

also,it does 1.5 greater dmg when it relitaties so...
about vampirism it doenst need great spellpower and it cost only 10mana so haven's know 3-4 is enough

The main problem is not knowledge, but the 33% chance of obtaining vamprism. SP cannot be too low as well or else it will be over too soon.

Quote: for my option "tanky" creature means tough and damage dealing so my list is different than many others
PLAGUE ZOMBIES
they can take lot damage and can suprise you with their damage, but sadly ,when they get chance to deal damage,is when they retalies.slow to deal dmg,but tanky with they health. 6/10
OBSYDIAN GARGOYLE
this guys have great hp,great init, great speed and immunity 3/4 elem, they are also elementals so they are immune to mind, poison and ressurection spells sadly.they also lack with dmg, otherwise very good tank. 6.5/10
STEEL GOLEM
one of best tanks for my option, have 75% magic res,are mechanical and great partnership with master gremlins .They do also great dmg and unlim ret, only lack is speed and init, but there is academy arties and normal arties to increase it also, march of golems 7.5/10
BATTLE GRIFFIN(ToE)
interesting would i say, this guys shows that they can be tanky, thanks 52hp wich is second highest hp in his tier, also def 12 is best def in his tier.they have unlimit ret and because they "weak" init, battle frenzy is good ability to him, they also do great dmg so...
8/10
DEEP HYDRA
big hp,big dmg range,no enemy ret, mutli hitting ability is enough to say,but while regen restores only 45-50hp to compare 120hp,regen doesnt show resurrections abl often.Because their weak init they get better chances to multihitting and init can be raised with arties, this is top 3 tanky creature.
9/10
ANCIENT TREANT
and now,"godly" praised "tanky" creature from sylvan. Thanks treant dwelling wood cost,i buy dragons before treants so,i dont have hordes of them and because i am offence player,i rather choose savages than ancients. It is true that they have high health and high def(better than sylvan's dragons has ) but dmg is,dmg is good enough slay tier1-tier3 creatures hordes and tier4 depends.Because of this, they arent so good "tanks". 7/10
MAGMA DRAGON
best hp,best def in game, magma shield, elemental and immune to fire.who said that magma shield doesnt hurt? in my latest game,i lost 14 champions because it and because i play with inferno usually, magma shield kills my troops more than AI creatures.Magmas deals also great dmg,but they have weak speed,so if you dont get rune of charge, they are in defencive line. 9/10
in the end list goes:
1.Deep hydra/Magma dragon
2.battle griffin
3.Steel golem
4.Ancient treant
5.obsydian gargoyle
6.plague zombies
Nice list, but the primary purpose of a tank is to absorb damage rather than inflict it. This is why the Treants are so great, because if they manage to bind enemies, they allow the rest of your units to bombard them as your Treant (with its special defend animation) absorbs the brunt of the damage. Tanks are also expendable, which is why you put them on the front line (think in terms of the military...you don't put your general in the line of fire). This is why Battle Griffins can't be tanks. You lose them and you lose a lot of mobility for Haven.
I want to make an argument for Inquisitors. They were designed to "tank" even if they are shooters because while their damage isn't spectacular, they suffer no melee penalties and they are TOUGH! Also missing from this list is the now rarely-seen Squires (Vindicators > Squires).
This list is missing Shield Guards/Stone Defenders and Warmongers (really, anything that isn't a Centaur, Goblin, or Wyvern can tank for Stronghold with BP).

Hmm... i like:
Magma dragon, their magma shields are deadly
Treant, they suck at attack but they good at defense.
Earth elemental, the anti - destructive spells .
Squire, they good at absorbing damages.
