Disecting the Necropolis...
Last but not least.
Special buildings make this town. The cover of darkness really pisses everyone off and the necromancy amp just keeps on giving. Throw the zombies out and you have a solid team. Alot of people don't like the wights but they are very useful against your lowlevel opponants. Enough cannot be said about how awesome vampire lords are and I think that the ghost dragon special is the best and most devastating of all.

...vampire lords are the only reason for me to play with Necro.... I don't like undead... of course if I'm lucky enough to get the Cloak of the Undead King and the Armor of the Damned, things change a bit... liches can kill you...

Creatures:
1) Skeletons. Average, but in such large numbers that they can be devastating.
2) Zombies. :shudders: They can soak up hits, but that's it.
3) Wraiths. Drain spell points, regenerate, are particularly strong in one-on-one against low-level groups.
4) Vampires. The uncontested best level 4 in the game - 2 can take down a Champion easily.
5) Liches. Solid range troops with spread-fire that won't hurt you. Excellent.
6) Dread Knights. The death blow is awesome, curse ... not so awesome, although against some units it's excellent.
7) Ghost Dragons. When their special kicks in, it's awesome. But that's pretty rare, and the stats are definitely sub-par.
Special buildings:
Necro Amp:
Skeleton Transformer:
Cover of Darkness:
Heroes:
Aislinn or Thant, take your pick. No really strong might hero.
Overall: A decent town, but definitely not the best.

Now for my opinion...
The Necropolis is a rather lowly town in most respects.
The Bad things are:-
- The Necropolis possesses three of the seven weakest creatures in their respective levels.
- Zombies are outright useless except for paltry castle defence.
- Wraiths are too fragile to lead an assault, and their specials are not that good.
- Ghost dragons are undoubtely the weakest level 7's. Low HP's, not so good aging ability and weak defence and damage make this by far ans away the worst top unit.
- The Necropoils is a pretty expensive town to build and to maintain. You will have a hard time getting all the dwellings within 4 months.
- The necromancy skill is only useful with necromancy enhancing artifacts and only if you will fight large stacks of armies.
- Many necropolis troops are SLOW.
The good things are:-
- Dread knights are on top of the world! Their ability to curse and do double damage make them unstoppable in large numbers.
- Vampire lords are awesome level 4's. Their life drain ability make them worthwhile in any undead army.
- The cover of darkness is an extremely useful building.
- Necropolis heroes have good specialties.
Overall, I will rate the Necropolis 8th in my rank of towns because it is just too expensive to maintain and most of the creatures are too much of a liability for the cost.

If you are careful enuf to collect 200 skellies in week1, you do not need to build or maintain your castle, excluding the vamp lords...
Add to this "animate dead"
on most maps, especially random L and XL, necro is absolutely INVINCIBLE

Necro is one of the easiest towns to upgrade. If you have enough stone and wood...
Wraiths aren't that bad a unit, ok speed and flying with decent #'s to produce. Good for blocking shooters or taking the retaliation. Also I've found them very useful for standing on the dead necro units so reanimate next turn works. Particularily the GD's.
Zombies pretty useless. I usually transform them into skellie if I even bother to buy them. Fit another unit into this slot, dividing GD's to maximize special works also.

As a random player Necro is one of two towns i play with rules against. Simply because there are no way to fight those skels. And as mad pointed out some of the best heroes in necro are might heroes. To use thant/aislinn as main heroes is brainless. Get a scholar to teach main those spells and your OK anyway. Or get them from mage guild.
Isra is my personal favourite necro hero, once he has gotten a few levels under his belt you will have skels all over the place.
Damacon_Ace, i wont argue with you since you wont understand what im saying. My advice to you is to play heroes3 online, then you will reckon what you have said might not be so true after all.

In my opinion necropolis is a good town except two things you have said: Expensive to build and zombies...Number of zombies always increases in my army but I have never been able to see them fighting active.
One of the best property of this town is dread knights according to me. They are strong ones

well i have to add there are strong necro might heroes.
straker - with him the zombies become as powerfull+durable as gorgons. specially in high numbers.
moandor - with liches u can attack more that one stack at a time which makes his special work more powerfull than any other creature special . alkin or example with 10 cows and he gives them lets say a +5 attack bonus . but moandor and 10 liches who attack 3!!! targets at once - that would be 15 + attack!!! ( 3 x 5 attack)
he simply rocks
the other necro mights i rate a little below average - but still playable

I would think the best Necro heroes are Isra, Vidomnia, Thant, Galthran.
The hero choices are simple because with Necropolis it all comes down to maximing your skeleton output. Clearly, Isra and Vidomnia are best suited to accomplish this task (ressurecting over 1000 skeletons per battle after 2-3 months). Thant is useful on smaller maps where skeleton and unit conservation is more important then numbers. Galthran is an average hero that becomes useful if you plan to have a long and drawn out campaign.
Though dread knights, leeches, and vampire lords are a good addition to your army they are nowhere near as strong as a legion of skeletons. Skeletons come out ahead because they are cheap early in the game and free late in the game.
Also, converting zombies to skeletons is a bad, since your skeletons are too expensive if you do that. Instead, keep the zombies to soak up damage and to eat up retaliations.

Units:
1. Skeleton Warriors - quite good and you can get a whole bunch of them with necromancy and the transformer.
2. Zombies - I found them quite useful in sieges and such. They are sturdy and for me their only drawback is their speed but that's what haste is for.
3. Wights - never liked these...too fragile.
4. Vampire Lords - super!!! What more there is to say?
5. Power Liches - good shooters especially because of their area attack which doesn't hurt undead.
6. Dread Knights - one of the best of level 6.
7. Ghost Dragons - a bit weak but fast and a useful special.
Special Buildings:
Cover of Darkness - really useful.
Skeleton Transformer - good if you have some external dwellings or other castles (very good with cheap and vast in numbers units like hobgoblins, gnolls)
Necromancy Amplifier - good especially if you have more necro castles.
Mage Guild:
Has useful spells: slow, implosion, town portal, meteor shower.
Overall:
Above medium power. Powerful if you can find what to "harvest".

Hi aZtral!
I've been reading the replies you made this last several days! It's always good to have new members in this part of the Community(I.E. the Library) cos it gives the feeling that there still are people out there sharing the same passion for the game even now after 6 years after its release!
One observation though!
Try argumenting your statements a bit;it's not enough to say something and act like you know what you're talking about.
For exemple if you read carefully this thread you will notice that there are some people that don't really share your enthusiasm regarding Aislin's skills as a main hero.So if you make a statement, please back it up with some arguments,or else people won't give much credit to what you're saying.
Be convinced that there are people here who know a thing or two more than you know about the game(and i'm NOT talking about me ),so better read more and then once you've experienced what people are saying you can step in and make a valid statement that will be treated subsequently.
Also you should know that sometimes newcomers brought new things and knoledge to the Community(for exemple read Lancelot's posts in "Homm Tactics" thread in ToH forum) so by all means feel free to share if you have a valuable ideea.
The problem is that people come and go and always talk about the same subjects that were discussed years ago. That's the best way to be called a n00b by older members and lose interess.
My suggestion is, if you really want to learn something from theese pages, to take your time and visit the table of contents for this forum and search whatever you want to know.
