Maybe a good start would be using conflux. Vampire lords can't drain life of elementals, but can of pixie and firebirds. Also the -1 morale for ghost dragons won't affect a lot of your army because they have no morale. My other suggestion would be to try form some shooter focused armies. once you rid yourself of liches, if you can mass slow his army and then mass haste yours... and the fight comes down to skeleton stack and zombies vs. your shooters, you can just bounce around the screen and finish them off.

Use conflux, because of the elements.
Or Castle, because of the units speed and morale.
Or Necropolis, fight death with death!

ooooooo, Citrus Mind, about same minute
phoenixes are fastest units in the game, you can blast your friend's troops and block liches btw
just concentrate at death knights and vampires and all will be fine
i would take magic protection because necropilsh guild likes impolosion nad curses
you can take brissa (haste spell) and invest into attack i think, in 2:1 proportion (for example 20 at and 10 def). all heroes 3 creatures have first strike (i am h4 player ), so strong attack will surely decrase retaliation strike damage. little defense is always needed. in this case your army will quick make an enemy weak, then battle is almost won

Aside from playing Conflux, you can also try Academy. Vampires will be useless against Gargoyles and Golems. Nagas can be VS the Knights, and Titans own Dragons. You have 3 shooters: choose one for Vampires, one for Liches, and the other one (preferably Titan) for Dragons. Buff up your creatures with Master Genies. Also, get lots of powerful spells (like Implosion and Meteor Shower) to blast your enemies.
Turn 1: Cast a spell on Gargoyles with Master Genies. Hopefully it will be Haste.
Turn 2: If the spell was haste, block Liches. If not, cast it with hero and block them.
That's how I would start the battle. Good Luck!

On XL maps, even Conflux stands no chance vs Necropolis (if played well). Those legions of skeletons just can't be beaten.
Best strategy imho is to chose necropolis aswell and use Galthran as starting hero. Get as many necro heroes as possible, level all of them up to expert necromancy. Build amplifier as soon as possible. Don't fight hugh stacks of low level units too early. Wait till u r expert necromancy (especially imp caches!!). Fight with your Vamplords mostly, let all of your heroes fight with them (each turn). That way u don't lose any skeletons, but recieve many every day. You should have around 1000 skeletons start month 2 if it is quite a rich template with many neutral creatures or money buildings. Look into your tavern and try to find Crag Hack week 2 latest. Crag Hack with a legion of skellies should be a nightmare to any necro hero your opponent has. (Use your necro heroes just to gather skeletons, not as main. Galthran was taken only to prevent your opponent to get him..)

In this case, Necropolis vs Tower, cast slow on skeletons and shoot him with all archers, and when he gets so close, about half of the starting units, use your nagas, without retaliation, together with archers and golems, who have high defense.

Im not sure using tower would raise your chances... in fact i think they would decrease them.
I had luck that any necro player i played wasn't skilled enough in general h3 strategies/tactics so i beat them because of faster development and use of chains (ends up with me having multiple towns more than they had). However against expert player with Necro i would be dead meat..
Question is: Is your friend an expert player? (if he has no online multiplayer experience then he 99% isnt, and you can use any general strategy tips you find on this board to beat him).
If he is, then I'm afraid that only thing i can think of is what some of the posters above have said... fight with necro as well, Galthran prefered.

I will elaborate my problem.
My friend is an expert player. And IMHO I think that I am a good player. We are playing HOMM3 since it has been made . . (in 1999 year i think)
We played Hot Seat for fun and to get know the game better.
Last few years we are playing on two computers.
Allways XXL random map, no Watter, 160 %.
Problem: If he is playing with Necropolis I lose. No matter what town, hero or strategy I use, it is the same. To much Sceleton
If he is not playing with Necropolis I win.
One we made a deal; you cannot play with Necropolis, you can choose any other town and you can choose with what town I will play.
(I choose the Hero) AND I BEAT HIM !!!!!
I ve tryed anything !!!
We have the rule that you can not chose town type that has been chosen
by your opponent.
I don't know what to do.
I think that the only fair thing is that no one can choose Necropolis ??????
Are there any other suggestions ???

And you think the Necropolis player doesn't have any spells to cast? Like Haste on skeletons, Prayer on skeletons, Teleport on skeletons, Counterstrike on skeletons, Clone on skeletons....etc....

Expert is a "subjective" validation. When do you normaly meet him on an XL map, and how many skeletons does he have at that time?

Try to use one specialist in dendroids.
This will give more speed to your dendroids soldiers, making they play before the skeletons, binding the enemy always and diminishing the retaliation damage.
Try to protect your dendroids, but when the enemy see their importance in the battle, will try to destroy it by anyway.
