New (P)RP idea- Elementalist
OOC THREAD
I have no idea how to structure this, pretty much just going straight from my brian to the keyboard, but bear with me
So I have this idea for a story/RP that came to me all of a sudden. Not that it's terribly cutting-edge but I think it would be awesome with 2 or 3 members here as a PRP, or as a open, full flegded RP.
It's basically a fantasy world, in the same sort of genre as Heroes, rather than modern or historical or whatever.
But the world is, as thought by Aristotle, composed of the four elements, Fire, Water, Wind and Earth. (at the risk of sounding too much like Captain Planet)
Simply put, the world is made up of the land, the sky, and the oceans which surround the land, and fire. (obviously) It is inhabited by humans, which dwell in the neutral cities, the earth, underwater, or fly (as assisted by magic)
I was hoping that if anyone was interested, they could help to brainstorm, because the world is still very open, these are just my rough ideas.
Imagine a world in which there is an endless conflict between these elements as factions.
Not the actual elements themselves, but like elementals and humans, and any other races.
The humans try to master the elements with magic, and the rarely seen elementals are the ones involved in the age old conflict.
Like waves of the ocean tear at the sky only to be held back in futility, and forever lapping at the ground.
So there could be this empire under the sea of water elementals and those mages who chose the path of water.
The brute force of the people of Earth maintain their land with stubborn power, and the air guardians keep the sea at bay.
But what about fire, you ask? Well I was thinking that fire could be like the higher class, the lords over the world, not really with their own domain, but try to keep the balance between all the factions, possibly assissted by air, like rulers and kings they cause bushfires, scorch the ground, evaporate water and burn the air with vengeance, keeping the land with an iron fist sort of thing.
But then it doesn't have to be as clear cut as this. I picture this world as a constant struggle by the different factions, like the Lords of water are trying to destroy the land and air, but not all of water wants this, some of them ARE peaceful.
Just as some of the Earth dwellers belong to nature and promote harmony, etc.
Which brings me to my other idea, of having the Lords of each domain.
Human magicians, not elementalists, who claim dominance due to their mastery of the certain elemental magic.
Such as the Lord of Earth, a ruler who is so posessed by earth that plants sprout from his hair, sand falls from his fists and vines grow on his face.
Or the Lord of Air, a wise, wistful old main who floats above the ground and can disappear altogether.
The magicians learn the magic in the cities, and can choose to join a side.. but the main goal is to maintain the balance.
And I also thought that if the people choose these sides, they pray to the Gods of the elements, whose incarnations are the elementals..
It's all just rough ideas remember.
I was also thinking that the Castle of Air floats way above the clouds, and is so discrete that no one has ever seen it, and some people even doubt that the Air elementals and the castle even exist..
The two main things I like about this idea as a PRP are:
-It's a living and breathing world, which can easily be changed by any participant in the RP dramatically, by adding new races, new features to the world, new cities, ideas, conflicts, factions, journeys etc.
and..
-It gives way for interaction. Most RPs only work properly if there is interaction between two characters, a trade, a conversation, a fight etc, requiring the people to be in the same place at the same time, which hardly ever happens without alot of planning. For example in this, a fire sorceror of one RPer could cause a blazing wildfire to spread across the forest in which a wise druid of earth is residing, another RPer who has to deal with the situation, giving much easier interaction. Without this interaction. it's just two people writing their own story in the same setting.
If there are any serious RPers who'd be interested as doing this as a PRP or something let me know.
Also post any questions or ideas you have, (I couldn't really put my ideas down very well) I think this will be great if it works out.
edit:
I think this will be work with around 2-4 committed PRPers, rather than an open RPG.

I love anything having to do with the elements so I recommend you watch these: http://www.theavatarportal.com/episodes.html
If you haven't heard of it before, the show is called Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Basically the premise of the show is a world that is divided up by the four elements. The Earth Kingdom, The Water Tribes, The Air Nomads, and The Fire Nation. As I'm sure you guessed each group of people master their native element and only that element but their is one person born like every hundred years or so that can master all four elements in order to maintain the peace between the four nations.
For a cartoon, it's actually pretty cool.

lol yea I've seen one episode... about a prophet of a town and everyone takes everything she fortells to be absolutely true
Well I just think that the elements give a good structure to the world, makes it more neat and, well, can be a change from the old goodies vs baddies

This sounds cool.
I'd be willing to give this a whirl.
Here's my character.
Reebus the Stalker
Description - Chieftan of a druidic and shamanic tribe called the Shoans, meaning "Ones with the Earth." The core of this tribe's magic is of the earth element. A few of their common spells for everyday use include a slowing spell to slow the animals for which they must hunt. For times of war they summon tremors beneath the feet of their opponents knocking them to the ground. Then in their bestial forms, they swiftly move into to finish off their victims.
The Shoans live in a valley with lush plant life and rainy grasslands. Their villages are setup amongst clusters of trees or around bodies of water. They lead peaceful lives and prefer to stay in their homelands.
The past year has been uncharacteristicly dry and the food sources have been much lower than usual. Thus they have had to venture out of their valley at times to hunt and forage for food.
Reebus and several others have also decided to leave the Valley in search of a far away tribe of druids who live on the coast to learn the ways of water magic, so they can bring rain clouds to their valley once again.
Okay so I'm thinking that perhaps the Shoans could have some weird barbaric nomads with a destructive fire magic could historically give the Shoans difficulty. So yeah, that's all I have so far.

That sounds perfect.
I was thinking of shapeshifting as an earth attribute too, and it's good how you brought out a connection between the earth and water.
I was thinking of either going as a forest druid, but now I think I will be a student who has gone through his apprentice training as a mage, who needs to venture out to either the castle of air or fire, not sure yet.
Oh and I need a reason why

Ya I hope we can get some more input from a couple others. This idea sounds pretty good. Main thing we need is to make sure everyone pulls together somehow.

That shouldn't be too much of a problem.
We might have one RPer for each element, like you from earth, me from fire etc, but it's not necessary..
My character outline:
Roke
Roke is a young mage who has recently earned his staff.
Coming from the central human city of Archdom, he owes no alleigance to any elemental faction, although is skilled at elemental magic.
This is party due to the fact that his father is a highly respected member of the Council of Fire, a powerful sorceror who acts as one of the judges for the balance. Roke, rebellious, doesn't wish to follow in his fathers quaking footsteps, and so ran away to live in Archdom, where he took his apprenticeship.
Only now, upon coming of age, has Roke realized his potential and wants to find out more about what his father actually does, and discover his own position in the conflict of the world.

I join... 'Nuff said
As usual, TDL should follow the stereotype of introducing a character, making up a story, a goal or somewhat to be accepted. But this time I have decided to alter it all a bit
Elor:
Elor... I heard this name so long ago. Under different circumstances I would have praised this name and beckoned for him to show up in times of need. Yet, what I, what he and what had been done could not erase my anxiety and hatred towards him.
God damn this man for he had crippled me! Never again was I able to enjoy even the happiest moment without suffering. But a story like this has a sad ending for one side while - and I am truly saying it involuntarily - the other loses...
Blustering wind was wailing among the rocky ridges of the Blackwell mountains. A black carriage, led by two ebony horses, unsteadily prouncing, slowly emerged from the forest nearby. The pavement, which was unusually made of cobblestone, reflected the sound of clattering hooves.
No one appreciates the enlightening gifts of the past...
A white-haired man, well into his sixties, grasped the handle and stepped outside, White hair, graying beard, sky-blue eyes - nothing so unusual about his physical embodiment, especially these days when new elemental trends. Yet, something about him seemed resilient, something that did not fit him, something that did not fit this world...
Thousand puny nations of elemental empires bellowed down on their feet when the elements had been started to worship.
Old man, judging by his appearance was weak - even the meager armor the silk clothes hid could easily be penetrated by a sharp shard of broken glass. A wide grin lit up on his face, as he stretched his arms and tapped the horses on the back. Awkward as it may sound, the day was particlarly windy, moving dark clouds back and forth in the dim sky, yet he showed signs as if he was going to have a lunch somewhere nearby. He took out a silk scarf and placed it onto the pavement. He was slow, his movements abrupt and you could see that he was much older clearly in his eyes. He did not even feel nor hear you approaching cautiously, stealthed within the rockface.
Not knowing how he had enough strength and stamina to unpack his belongings from the heavy stack, taking out what seemd to be a piece of torn unused parchment and a bitten green apple. You knew a skillful assassin like you could slit his throat without him even feeling the hilt of the blade touch his brow. Yet, you chose to wait and not to act.
A man deep within himself might fall into his own trap, rendering himself helpless of surviving...
You could not believe you were ordered to assassinate - nothing about him seemed any special, yet the superiors wants him annihilated. Order you must obey. A vow to obey. A personal promise. A pact of self-destruction.
Bushes in front of the rockface hid you well, but you know the time to strike had come. If not, the ordered will not be done...
A failure means the beginning of a new ending, yet success is just a pause until another failure...
Sudden red flash and his scarf was searing with flames. You know your tricks and mischiefs are not harmful, but they distract and allow you to finalize the job. Your blade shines blood red in the flames as you strike him, attempting to pierce his heart...
'Has no one ever taught you not to play with the matches?'
The moment stopped... Movement was seized... Even the sound of wailing became more silent...
CRACK!
The pain was searing in my back, but yet I did not know where was its source. I was feeling my skeleton broken within the body and blood flowing free around me. Only within a period of time I saw myself dangling on a tree as if I and him were the same being.
The old man approached you, empty-handed, completely unchanged. Same grin, yet filled with grief and sorry for your fate, carried by his owner, approaches you.
'I knew they would send a murderer to kill me. Alas, an old man's appearance fools even the wisest and the force within me never really makes me one minute older. You know,' he crouches and smiles at me. 'You should be proud of yourself... You are the closest someone has ever been this close to harming me.'
At the very moment, I understood what happened.
Understanding what is to happen inevitably is a person's fate - understanding what had happened is a person's virtue...
I failed... But I knew a failure had to come... I was ordered to kill Elor, the rogue elementalist...

my character is Hayate
a elementalist, who specialises in air magic. it is often thought of as a rogue, he naturally doesn't take his work seriously, and prefers to think of life as a game, often gambling the lives of people he doesn't know about. he is hedonistic and somewhat mad, but his creative way of fight often combines parts of elements that he wasn't supposed to know and his artistic way has often extended to many darker arts.
In the elemental council, he is number eight in the bingo book to assassinate, because of his massacring of around 300 people, the destruction of an enter city and the inflation of Lady Broncha. it may be hard to imagine this extravagantly dress youth, strange tattoos around his face, armed with only a simple bow staff, trinkets, charms and ornaments dangling about his person, including paint brushes, writing equipment, sculpture items, books and musical instruments. his tradmark exit is a highpitched cackling laughter.
Eyatah is another character that Hayate, who is a sictsophrenicaic, can appear as. Retha is a quiet, calm, chased, person, modestly dressed, preaching about the better world. he, unlike Hayate, is armed with alot of swords and cannot do any magic or is artistic in any way.
