To avoid quitter
hmm...
everytime i met with the situations which my imperior oppo. suddenly tell me '' oh. i got a go. (on errand..or.. mother is mad.. father is drunken.. daughter keep bothering..son is sick.. grandmom goes to the hospital.. friend is dying..etc...) and save game continue later.."
I consider it , partially, as my tactical mistake.
Let me show you some solutions for it.
1. No Quit No save. Quit= Lost
Set a rule b4 game begin
of course that is not enuf.
2. Hide my hero status to the last moment.
in 95% of the quitting case, that snow happens..
right after when my super power-main hero status
reveals in tavern windows.
So, hide it!!
make my enemy dream of victory, never to give up.!!
3. and the last..
don't fight with plebes. they often quit game.

I hear you guys but I think otherwise
I mean this if you have to go, you lose????? whats up with that? I have many saves, and I finish many saved games. sometimes i only have an hour or two b4 I have to go to bed or out, and I want a heroes "fix" as long as you are up front, no big deal, I dont recomend this with people you are unfamiliar playing, but for people you know and always see, what's the problem. chess games are not played in one sitting, whats the big difference? "If my opponent has to go, I consider it a tactical mistake on my part" ??!! what a load of egotistical crap that is

I agree with Zud
to me saves aren't a big deal either. usually i am able to coerce an opponent to finish the game, or even more likely i have no problem with them dropping out to avoid a loss. I often ask for saves myself, someone callse me and asks to go out i will always choose getting drunk over heroes
BTW thats a good way to beat me, be on the zone when i come back.
No but seriously, i make sure i keep every save and make it a priority to finish them. Maybe because i hate unfinished games, if i took time to start the game i am more then likely to want to finish it no matter what my position is.

Yes
And there are a lot of established ToH players who of course, saving games are never a problem with. These are the kind of people who this thread is not directed at and we all know that saving a game for later continuation is a necessary feature of any HoMM game with someone on the other side of the world (or even in the same suburb, lol!).
I try not to play recruits or even inexperienced footmen because this is the problem that I often face. Sometimes I can't get a game with the big guys in Zone and the times when I am online for long periods or enough to finish a game in one sitting is the time when nobody worthy seems to be around. So I'm stuck with trying to hustle up a game with some guy who I've never heard of before let alone played. And I don't know how many times I've been hit with the 'Gotta go sorry' syndrome.
Coming from someone who I know or even someone who's integrity is vouched for, then this sort of thing is never a problem and I always allow the other player to come to me with the request to continue. It's rude manners to force another player to continue a save I think.
But it's even more rude being that 'other' player to not offer to continue a save.
I must admit myself that this problem is a lot smaller than it has been made out to sound, but the idea of not playing newbies for this express purpose of avoiding non-continued saves is somehow disheartening.
Do you remember when you were a newbie? Do you remember saying 'if only I could get a game with THAT person, then I'd show them how reliable and good I really am...'
I make saves pretty often too and some of them I haven't finished because both me and the other player have not been freely available at the same time. Zud, I got a save to finish with you, you stud... next time I see ya on Zone, we're on okay?

I don't see any problem in saving games. If people want to save and choose not to continue that game even if you ask them to that's their problem, not mine. They are not honorable and i will never consider playing them again.
I expect my opponent to respect the fact i have to save and quit without giving me a loss. If i have to report a loss sure i will but get ready to lose some of those honor points (wich people get WAY to many). When my opponent wants to save that's fine for me too. We can continue any time we meet on zone or if it takes very long set up a time via e-mail.
This whole honorable or non-honorable thing has gone way to far. I think the honorable button in TOH is only making people watch honor much more without changing they're way of playing. So actually the only effect it has is judging your opp if they are honorable and complain if they are not. I see it this way; if you honor is important to you then play with honor, if it's not don't complain if you're opponent isn't. Most people complaining about dishonorable people don't have a clean sheet themselves (i'm not saying everybody that complains is dishonorable). I will play people i trust simply because that way i have most fun.
Playing recruits can be fun but usually isn't. So should i play a recruit just so they get a game as well? Ofcourse not, i play to have fun. There will always be recruits that can play. Live and learn, recruits drop from games. If they do contact them and tell them to continue, if they don't you win. You get your points and soon you'll climb in rank and get good games going. It will be a pain for recruits to get higher ranks i know, but we all had to go through that. If you love the game you'll get there.
I guess what i'm trying to say is; don't make a big fuss about saving games. The game doesn't have a save option for no reason. I can't play a 8 hour game every day, i have my normal life next to that. I like playing the game, but i don't like people bugging me i have to finish the game if i can't. I allways tell people upfront i might not be able to finish the game cause anything could come up. If they tell me they don't want to play me then that's cool for me, i don't think they are dishonorable it's just the way they want to play.

remember
Remember if you have unfinished games and the player doesnt want to finish or ignore you, as it says on unreported winloss page:If your oponent does not report the game within 24 hours, it is recommended to email them to report. If they do not reply, you can dispute it in several ways:
"-By emailing TOH disputes, with attached saved game showing your endgame or when the player dropped. If a game is unfinished you may only get partial credit.
-By emailing TOH disputes, to have a win or loss report deleted from the page, because it is either reported by accident, or a fake report.
-By contacting the Honor Council, in regards to your opponent if you think either cheated or acted very poorly in the game."

because of my dirt poor ISP, I get booted randomly, and I have to restart my computer to get back online.
At the beginning of the game, I always tell my opponent: "If I leave, it's only because I got disconnected ... and if this happens, meet me in zone and we'll reload the autosave. ... ok?"
I always get a response of ok, but if I didn't, I'd most likely not play them.
There has been only 1 (out of 15) that has refused to continue a game. Unfortunately, I deleted the save.
I've noticed that most people try to find an excuse before they just drop out of the game. And I've noticed that the time they drop out is on both of these conditions:
1 - they know (or think) they're going to lose.
2 - when I get disconnected.
I must admit, there was one time when I purposely dropped: It was on day one, and on a map I didn't like.

About the save thing
I got the same problem as Wiggy only it's not because of my dirty poor ISP , it's because I'm connected throught modem and sometimes my parents want to speak on the phone , and I can't say no.
Some other times I can't stay very long because I have to go to sleep (I already stay too late ). But those times I warn my opponent that I may not be able to finish the game.
So I totally agree with Maxym, Wiggy and Zud.
