HoMM4 vs. AoW2
We all know what features HoMM4 will have. AoW2 will have them all PLUS:
-lots of special buldings in towns like: summoning gates, dungeons, magical weapon forges, libraries, observatories etc.
-Deities as an active force within the game-world.
-In AoW its virtually impossible to keep both good and evil units in your army (Does Angels and Devils in one army sounds familiar?).
-When you capture a town that has a different alligment than yours: you have to migrate it, or raze it or keep a garrison there, otherwise it will rebell. How many times have I captured Dungeon while playing Tower ... and the population did not mind it at all
The point is that not much has changed. Competition seems alwys one step ahead!!
P.S. Please, dont bother to list all new things in H4. I know them all, and again, it may be NOT enough ...

...but AoW2's design is far more crappier than HoMM4!!! Ugly artworks...disgusting creature design...dumb sounds...no way it'll win the competition. I better give a way to Disciples2 or Etherlords.

...hmm, I can't distinctly recall what AoW is like...isn't it that game, although with some nice features, truly pains one to look at for over a few minutes? ...hmm, if its the one with the horrible graphics then I still maintain that HoMM is better...not that I wouldn't have otherwise

Remember how long have we waited fo AB and SoD?
Every expansion pack introduced some change to the game.
New creatures, dwellings, artifacts etc.
And most importantly it brought money for 3DO ...
In my opinion they are holding something back, as soon as AoW2 and Desciples2 is going to attract to big attention they will release an xpack.
Another thing is that now HoMM have a stronger competition than few years ago. They need something really new and creative to attract new and old fans.
As for Lichie_Lich reply I think you havent seen the screenshots. After success of AoW they have money to make AoW2 look and sound nice.

It's not really about the graphics...it's more about the DESIGN. You should look at how DUMB AoW was designed...the halflings with LEPRECHAUNS as the HIGHEST level unit. There's only one word to describe AoW: UGLY.

Please dont say anything about the AoW unless you played it. It has a lot of cool features (razing towns, maintaining global spells on leaders, more special abilities and so on) that H3 lacked, altough it cannot compete as far as graphics and sound is concerned.
I hope that H4 brings a new expirience for me. Something more than the best graphics and music, other games will have them both on pretty much the same level. I mean smth uniqe that no other game has to offer.

...if any game appealed to me, espcially the graphics and the design, I would most likely be playing or have played it...however, if they don't have much of either, thats just a big no no...
...actually, I truly believe that the creation of HoMM IV is behind schedule and they need to make up time, but they probably also have a bit more of extra time to improve a couple more feautyres on it or whatever, as the different release dates helps avoid some of the other strategy and RPG games...Civilization apparently one of or the biggest competitor it has at this time...

Well... I got to admit that the sequel may have improved lot. I just hate to look at the way AoW 1 was badly designed.

I think I must say one more thing.
Remember that above all I am HoMM fan. Nothing will replace those 'throngs' of nights that I spent playing that game with my firends.
However, as with every addiction, the longer you use it the greater stimuli it has to be for you. After a few months of playing I might get bored, and may switch games (supposing that Disciples2&AoW2 has smth different to offer).
Unless the xpac comes ..,

...hmm, it still doesn't seem that impressive to me, however much of an improvement they've made...my choice is and shall always be HoMM...and when I decide to switch games, it will most likely be to a different style...depending on the order of the release dates, I will probably play Warcraft III and HoMM IV back to back, and probably together if they come out at relatively close dates...
...if you’re bored, then why go for pretty much the same thing. Go wild, and go for something different. That is how you will get the most out of your gaming time.

Well, I get what icon is saying. Personally I didn't really care about the graphics or how everyone said how bad it looked... I thought they looked fine, though without detail the cartoony look fitted the game and was very fairy-tale esque. AOW was a good game, but could have been much more. I think that one thing AOW had over HOMM was the ability to cast spells on the adventure map that had massive impact, such as altering terrain and making obstacles, summoning creatures and mass destruction spells (my fav!) or one great spell that calls down neutrally aligned powerful good units that attack any evil armies in the immediate vicinity. Also, spellcasting took several turns if it was a big spell and it was a really good magic system I think.

I will get them both. AOW seems like a direct descendent of Master of Magic, which is hands down my favorite turn based fantasy strategy game, even above HOMM series.
I didn't mind the graphics. The game play was a ripoff of MOM, which is a good thing. If only they would do a sequel to MOM..

You are right, AOW does have the upgrade of every special feature but I think they just copied HOMM.

yeah
I agree with the baal. It does have all this new features, and the design and graphics have improved to the point of maybe H3-H4 but it is more of a copy. Plus i think that HOMM4 has more to offer.

Actually you are wrong. Age of Wonders has copied Master of Magic but it is not exactly a copy. I read that it is an (un)official sequel to Master of Magic...
And just the opposite - HoMM4 will contain some features of Age of Wonders and Disciples. Here are some of them:
From Age of Wonders - there can be more than one hero in an army; there can be armies without heroes; and many more that I can't remember at the moment
From Disciples - you can choose between two creatures per level; you can use potions (I'm not sure that they copied it from Disciples but it's fact that in the latter you can use potions)
So HoMM takes the good ideas from other games. The only game that I haven't noticed to be copied so far is Civilization...
So it will be a great time for the Turn-Based Strategy fans - Heroes 4, Age of Wonders 2, Disciples 2, Civilization 3... But why not mix them in the future? (as I suggested in another thread)...

Ahhh..
Good old master of magic. I spent months with that game in the good old days The only problem with it was that you could make an unbeatable force of 9 heroes and just take every town you wanted. And yes AoW is VERY inspired of MoM but there are still many differences. Once creatures can move on their own in HMM then the game will become more like these, and that will ruin the uniqueness of the game IMO. But then again if it makes the game better, who cares I would also call AoW an unofficial MoM2, but still with some differences, (you cant build cities in AoW for example). And whats wrong with the lepracaun? Its a magic creature with powerfull magic abilities. AoW is also VERY tolkien inspired in every way. MoM was a fantasy version of civilization. In fact HMM4 uses the same magic-system that MoM did, (life death nature chaos order(sorcery)), so dont say that AoW is just a MoM or HMM copy. Its different games, and I enjoyed AoW because of the good gameplay, even though it had "crappy graphics". A game can still suck with good graphics.

Something vs something
Maybe economically these games are competing but in my opinion if compare their previous installments…HoMM3 wins easily AOW. AOW lacked strategy. It was very light with no real resource gathering and even if it had many units when in battle they worked the same. The game was very dull for me as I tried the demo and played in friends house. My friend is devoted MoM fan and also warlords hit him like sledgehammer but AoW was definately miss.
MoM was very huge game compared to lighter versions that are out now. Current games are done for much larger customer base than MoM originally was.
HoMM has some kind of strange feeling of joy of gaming that I haven't found from any other fantasygame. Maybe this isn't the case with HoMMIV and it's miss but I have much more better expectations for HoMMIV than for AoW.
I don't really care about graphics but how game is played. I could play game with MoM graphics still if game would rock otherwise.
So my money very possible goes to HoMMIV and I don't care whatever units or things AoW has if tactics and overall gaming feeling is lacking.
I'm not saying that AoW2 couldn't surprise me and I would buy it and leave HoMMIV to shelf.
But as things stand now I'm waiting that HoMMIV comes out and then I judge it.
I believe it to be the winner.
