While I was at it, I slightly tweaked the design of the profile edit page to make it a little easier to use. Doubled the width of signature box.

Looked into a bug reported 2 pages ago - signature line breaks. I think this is fixed now. Could people who experienced it test and confirm?

Implemented automated signature restrictions:

- profile will not save if signature has more than 5 lines of text (previously this was only a warning, but now there is an automated check)

- signature will be automatically reduced to 200 characters (previously this was done when the posts are displayed, now this is done when profile is saved)

Yes, it appears that the server clock has changed. Updating timezone offset in your profile is indeed the solution.

The profile updating bug affecting veco should be fixed now.

Yeah, the server clock changed at the same time as they did the server change during the recent downtime.

I am working on updating the era mods thread. Text is now 68 kb and I am only at half work. Now it says error when trying to continue. I pasted the whole txt into an external file while waiting.

I could split the update in 8 consecutive posts but I can only update the first one (project).

Any solution to this problem?

What is the text of the error that you get? I'll see if this is fixable.

Error has been encountered while processing this request. The input data might not have been valid.

This occurred only lately, I guess is about thread size but I don't know the limitations. When I remove some text, it works.

I've checked up on this and the maximum length of posts is around 65,000 characters. This has always been the case. What do you expect to be the length of your finished work? Can it fit into this restriction?

I am afraid no, I don't know how to check characters number but I already see that additional text is not accepted.

The thread is here. One interesting solution would be to delete first page everyone's post except mine so i can divide the text in 8 parts and add links in main post. But the problem is I can't edit other than first post (project) so I am handcuffed for others.

Another solution would be to create a main page for each mod (there are 100 of them) then have the main post only link to them. But then, in one year, all of those 100 mods will need project status if need update so I don't think is good solution. But tell me first what can be done about my proposal above, create a page with 8 posts of mine and divide the mods categories.

Or remove the 65000 limit for that thread, but I don't know how is this possible technically.

I found a handy little script for checking the number of characters - you can paste your text into the box here and click Calculate Characters.

We need to find a solution to be able to accommodate your good work, but I don't want to set up something that allows enormously long pages.

I see that you've separated your list into multiple categories: Platforms, Graphics, Scenarios, Gameplay. I think it would be best to create a separate Project thread for one or two of the largest sections. So for example the main sticky post would have Platforms, Graphics, Scenarios and you could link to non-sticky second project thread that contains the Gameplay category.

With this two-thread solution you will have 65000+65000 characters, and it can always be broken into three category threads if needed to increase that further. Let me know if you think this will be a suitable solution.

ok, just calculated, I am as expected, at 64xxx.

There are 9 tags in mods categories, you saw only 4 because I had to stop before work is done:

[Interface]
[Gameplay]
[Graphics]
[Scenarios]
[Cheats]
[Towns]
[Platforms]
[Utilities]
[Without Category]

Each category has its own number of mods, with gameplay going up to 40, while towns only 10, interface 8 and so on.
Your proposition for multiple father threads is interesting, the only backside I could think of is that people can get confused to have one main thread linking to other unstickied main threads and then fail to do a proper search, or find the mod they search for.

For me it was comfortable to have only one (long I concede) page where I add modifications for every update I need, and being able to browse through categories rather fast, because of spinning gifs I added (especially for fast navigation).

But if you say there is no way to get past the 65k restrictions then your solution might be the best. Let me know what you think then I accommodate. Two threads should be enough I think, if one not.

I think this would be the best way to do it:

Two Project threads: first one sticky, second one not sticky.
The sticky thread starts with a table of contents, listing the sections. Some of the sections will be in the second thread and link to the second thread is provided.

To make it searchable, table of contents could have a quick list of mods under the categories. For example:

Game Mods Section (link)
Contains Mods: additional heroes mod, leveling changer, some other mod, ...

This way mods can be found by name using CTRL+F even if they are located in the second thread.

Maybe I'm totally off road here, but isn't all that content that you want to place there better suited for Wiki pages? Then you could just make a masterpost with links to those Wiki pages, instead of posting everything on the forums. I don't know the limits of a Wiki page, but I'd guess that it's more than a forum post. Or is the difference in maintenance of those Wiki pages quite a different ballpark than maintaining forum posts?

A wiki would indeed be more suitable. We have Heroes 6 and Heroes 7 Wikis on AOH, and an old Modding Wiki for Heroes 5, but no wiki for Heroes 3.

Theoretically we could have a Heroes 3 Modding Wiki with HC logins (like H6 and H7 wikis have). If there is enough interest and people who are willing to create and maintain the content I could set it up. Actually this would solve a lot of problems with who can edit the content and when and allow longer pages that can be edited by multiple people. Also there's more functionality like file and image uploads, sortable tables, etc.

But I have no idea what wiki is (I know wikipedia, thats all). Anyway, I will just make two threads as agreed, I will split categories in two then I will ask both to be stickied if possible, the perspective of several dozens of mods details going to be buried because technical limitations is not enchanting me. This way we will have on main forum page all categories. Thanks for suggestions.

Me neither but I'm guessing it's something very easy to learn since everything I run into has a wiki site nowadays. It would be the permanent solution with all the graphic upload options (no more broken images etc), who knows if 2 threads will be enough as more mods keep coming up?

Does one need to learn additional coding to make a wiki page?

yes, then also requires additional time to setup. We will see, once the two threads meet technical limits, but I think it will be ok; not many modders left, all good things have an end.

Let's sticky just the first thread as it is not good to make the forum page very long - there are already 9 stickies. First thread will link to the second so it will be very easy to find anyway.

Artu is right - wiki would solve the problem of broken images and broken download links. Images and files would also be easier to upload and insert.

Editing a wiki is easy, quite similar to editing HC posts, just slightly different syntax and much more possibilities. Go to this page, log in with your HC account and click EDIT to see what the code for it looks like. To see a more advanced layout you can click EDIT on this page - it shows the kind of formatting that is not possible on HC. And to see some really advanced possibilities (sortable table and acronyms) check this page. And here's the basic wiki syntax guide.

It's up to you guys of course. But I wouldn't think H3 modding is dying. WOG forum is the second most visited forum on HC.

EDIT: there was a bug with editing incomplete member profiles - should be fixed now.
