I couldn't agree with you more. If your music is about negative subjects just about the only way to deal with this is in a tongue-in-cheek manner, otherwise people will think you're too serious and refuse to listen to you. I've never listened to GWAR but the majority of their lyrics are negative and the fans take it as 'joke songs'. In fact, joke songs are quite common in the punk fraternity. Even though I'm not the biggest Blink 182 fan, I could admit some of their songs with questionable lyrics are done tongue-in-cheek.

however, some of what I have heard, for example, some songs that I have, one in particular is talking about sex.
