Magical battles are fun and interesting. It's only fun if you're the magic-user, not if you're the guy whose stacks are attacking eachother and randomly dying to magic.

I go for mighty brute force and sweaty warriors winning by their own strenght and not wimpy magic! The ingredients willpower and rage gives chills to an unprepared mage

Just cant wait any longer to get my hands on how to control the bloodlusty orcs

Strong magical heroes are very important in the campaigns, when learned spells are carried over the missions (unlike creatures ), which gives you significative advantage at the beginning of the missions (creeping) when you are able to fight even 6 level monsters with 1 and 2 lv creatures (H3:AB!)

i would say that a perfect balance would be a good might hero with decent knowledge that can cast mass spells (as they dont depend on spell power)

and THATS why haven is the best late game faction

might AND magic... devestating!

Well, I try to balance the two as much as possible - if you mean hero skill development, I assume -, but because I like playing academy, I usually end up relying for a big part on magic, even in the XL rich maps where you can afford a lot of mini arties.
