Yeah, I know it doesn't make you physically male or female, but people's perception of you as masculine or feminine is based on those stereotypes.
I mean, if a guy complained about having a chipped nail, he would be considered very feminine.
*shrugs*
it's all perceptions... but perception is what creates reality.

??????????????????????????????
What in the big bloody blue hells is this thread about?
Some guy is trying to make a point and it turns into a three page debate on semantics.
That must be the feminine part of everyone.

back on topic
I guess in ways im play both masculine and feminine roles depending on my mood (perhaps depending on the time of the month?) hehehehe, but sometimes i just wanna play a game and crush the enemy and other times i enjoy taking months to build up a huge army before i go off to conquer...

just my guess:
I think it's a feminine attribute to worry about one's masculinity or femininity ... because I just can't picture Crag Hack giving a $#!* about this.
and I'm assuming that CH is the ultimate in masculinity.

well, I guess if you want to go DEEP into psychology, it would involve the left brain/ right brain stuff.
left brain's basic function specialties are: mathematics, logic, spelling, focusing with tunnel vision, etc..
right brain's basic function specialties are: art in all forms, picking out a face, handling multiple tasks at once, etc..
now, please don't get on my case about all this, because these are from my psychology textbook and professors:
statistics show that women have a more developed right-brain, and men have a more developed left-brain. It is theorized that such is because of physiological differences.
I guess this goes to show that artistic males (who seem femmy) aren't really "feminine", but rather right-brained ... and vice versa with my friend (Kathy) who's an electrical engineer ... perhaps she's not "masculine", but rather left-brained.
to be honest, I believe I found the closest alternative above ... because over 80% of what we consider masculine / feminine are directly linked to the left / right brain studies.

Dear o dear. I am advised that the half-life of Psychology theories is approximately 7 years ... the professor said "half of what I teach you will be denounced as rubbish in seven years time, and I don't know which half."

Left-brain, right-brain - if you'd used these terms from the start, you might not have got all sorts of people all het up about it ... then again, maybe you wouldn't have gotten so many people reading the thread at all!
Well - what *are* the proper terms? Defensive vs aggressive play? I'm a defensive type. Does that correlate with an aversion to necropolis? I am a *protective* type - that's a better description of my play style than 'defensive'. What is the opposite, though? What words to you use to describe the player who is rather less worried about losses or interested in building up their hero? Aggressive, or possibly just *fast* - although as a protective player I know speed can pay off in the long run. I still can't play as fast as some.
RPG vs tactical? You've used those terms a few times, and they *do* work - it's just they've been overshadowed by 'masculine vs feminine'.
(Incidentally, I'm a nuclear physics PhD student. And fond of cooking. :-) )

me, I'm a philosophy minor ... and my Mom's a clinical psychologist.
You are correct DragonSister, as my chemistry teacher told me a quote (and I forgot who quoted it), "Science lives off its own decay."
agressive vs. defensive are better, more descriptive terms.

Hmm, this may be a bit offtopic (if that's possible ) but I prefer this quote that my physics teacher gave us a few weeks ago, better:
"Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that'snot why we do it. "
~ Richard Feynman.

the left-brain and right-brain thing seems to have some merit, but it's also possible for a person to switch from one to the other and back.
I mean, sometimes you're in a more creative mood, and can't seem to focus on math homework or whatever.
Other times everything just seems really logical and straightforward when you think about it.
I think the best ideas/discoveries come from being able to tap into the power of both halves of your brain at the same time.
I heard which nostril of your nose you breathe through can affect which half of your brain is being used more at the time.
wierd stuff.

ok, enough of the corpus cullosum (the part of the brain that links the left and right hemispheres), back to the original stuff:
are you more of an agressive player, or defensive / protective player? and why?

my preferrences
personally, I'm a bit more agressive ... I play to fight! ... not sit around building and building and building. I find the battles fun ... not the hero development.
I'd like a map that has NO artifacts whatsoever . . . where warriors have stats like:
9 5 2 1
... and mages have:
1 1 8 7.

Is it just a big coincidence that most types of play you use and like is down as masculine and everything that you dont you see as feminine?

Maybe...
I personally think that I many times do things that are very feminine but that's just plain stereotyping...
I happen to be very defensive and aggressive everything I do. But also I have flexibility that is seen as feminine many times.
So in the end...
You should all go back read about yin/yang philosophy and then read some psychology and come back to post.
BTW nice post dragonsister...

Wiggly - I agree with you there. It would be great to play with lower-powered heroes, because the numbers sorta lose meaning after you have 30 in everything.
I also play to win, not build up my heroes forever, but the first time I play a map, I like to at least see everything that's on it.

actually arachnid, such is not the case.
If you read all the posts I wrote, I mentioned: that I have both the masculine and feminine attributes in playing HOMM3. In another post I stated that: I admitted that I was a little on the feminine side.
anyway, changing the subject a little bit, here's something I've discovered about might heroes and magic heroes throughout HOMM history:
-----------------------------------------------------------
3do fixing their bugs...
ever since HOMM1, 3do has had a problem with allowing warriors to have the same magical abilities as the warlocks and sorceresses... and vise versa.
in HOMM2, they added a new element: wisdom ... to make it harder for warriors to learn powerful spells.
in HOMM3, they added yet another element: earth, water, fire, and air magic specialties... to give the magic users a boost in the magic.
However, there still exists one problem, that when a hero and a mage are fully developed, they end up roughly equal, with similar stats, similar spells, and both having expert earth magic and wisdom.
Thank God they're fixing this in HOMM4! because clearly, this should not be the case.
-----------------------------------------------------------
this applies to the 'constant building', where in the end of most maps (unfortunately), your main hero is one buffed up battle-mage.
