The 90s nostalgia

I miss 90s.

Remember those old action/drama shows? McGyver, Knight Raider, baywatch and such? The spring of latin soap operas that kept our mums glued to the TV? The 90s parties and dance hits (Mallorca, Bamboleo x] Happy summer nonsense). The films that actually survived in fame for more than one year, even if they were crappy? Animes like dragon ball z or cowboy bebop?

What happened with all that stuff..?

There's nothing since 2000, literally.. The films are quickly forgotten, the shows are bad or terrible, the toons are more and more brainwashed and stupid (hi cartoon network).. With the sole exception of harry potter, we have a great stagnation in the culture. I mean, even if there wasn't much of value in the 90s culture, it kept people amused and happy. And now? What do we have now? On TV, we have the same old hits over and over.. Bah, even the World Cups are less and less atractive each year (maybe it's just me, but the France 98 was excellent for me, korea 2002 was terrible, and germany 2006 JUST mediocre). I miss the old times. I don't remember them all (I'm just 20), but I miss them already...

I wonder what older guys think.

The 2000+ is an age of internet and gaming; WoW has consumed many, and instead of normal relationships, people are engaged in msn and other stupid online communication. We have more and more special effects in cinemas, and less and less MAGIC, the thing that actually made the films breathtaking, even if they were plain dumb or trashy. People are completely money-crazed, they keep working and working, forgetting about their families and friends. What's wrong with this world? Is it solely because we have *internet* and that there's EVERYTHING in it? That you don't have to go to cinema, just download the movie from the torrent, you don't have to meet with your friends, you can just chat online, and so on.. there is nothing in it but the consumption, you just take it, see it and delete it, without any atmoshpere at all..

I seriously miss the old, trashy times. The old shows, the old music, the old way of thinking. Perhaps I'm too nostalgic at too young age, but I can't stop it. And watching the old shows, reading the old books and listening to the old music just makes me more and more nostalgic. aww.

Sorry for all my typos and grammar/syntax mistakes.

It's funny, just yesterday I was wondering to myself "what did people do with their free time before video games?"

I kinda expected you to make such a post You are so right. People either do not have this kind of inspiration/creativity anymore or don't care and just aim for decent results by trying little. Ok not all things had quality but many did have a certain magic and it's not just about nostalgia. It's that spirit that seems to be gone.

As for people with wow and other mmorpgs I have changed my mind. I used to think of games as a way to pass the time and enjoy yourself. Yes I have been addicted with certain games as a kid and I still enjoy gaming but this is something else. they feel the need to play and play for hours(talking over 12 hours in a row) in a pointless levelling of their character. Yes it's fun. Yes I would do that to to an extent. But not while it eats away at your lear life time when you could have done something more productive. These games now are models of a mini community just like forums and they feel the need to be around.

Anyway I'll end my rant here you have probably heard of all this time and again. I just get bugged to hear about 7 year olds staying in an internet cafe playing counterstrike and asking for cigarettes or 30+ year olds getting divorced because they could not control their addiction. With all those people around it's hardly a surprise that they still enjoy dumbed down versions or shows or they don't do much better.

Nevertheless there are some good series here and there. Lost and nip tuck are amongst them imo but I rarely watch tv anymore so I have missed many things. I can certainly say that the cartoons are not as appealing and my age has nothing to do with it.

Also I have noticed that a vast majority of the films that sell are remakes, book adaptations and sequels. That's at least a bit disturbing..

As I wait for the new season of Heroes to start on Aussie TV (it will be fasttracked this time round), I still question the quality of US TV these days. You have to watch pay TV just to watch something decent. If I were to want to know what happened on those crappy reality shows on MTV I'd watch the Soup.

I totally agree with you,Doomforge.

I think nowadays we are flooded with new films/music/books, and while the number of them increases the quality is decreasing.

Thinking about the music of 90's... My favourites(Korn,RHCP for instance), are still exist, and their music is still at the same level as it was back in the 90's. But imo they are far less popular, because drum 'n' bass and **** like that are called the "music for cool people", and you're a loser if ya listen old(er) songs.

Your point of view is the same as mine, and it's good to know that I'm not the only person who thinks this way

Of course I can

I'm a 18-year old guy from Hungary.

I started playing Homm 3 back in 2002, and I played every day for 2 years, then last year when homm 5 was released, I immediately started playing with it. But that time i didn't have internet at home, but this september we connected it finally So I logged in asap, and read through most of the interesting topics. I play mainly strategy games(homm , warcraft) but my favourite is still heroes, that's what brought me to this forum. I'm looking forward talking with you in this forum, and playing games online!

Btw, is there anyone else who is also Hungarian? If so, please let me know!

If this info is not enough ask specific questions please!

Ahem.

Pinkspear, you're not supposed to understand It's best for you (and for us all) never to find out who KD is...

Anyways, I don't really miss the 90s cause of, well, various crap... But I miss the 60s and 70s (though I sort of wasn't born then )

I don't mind the 2000s actually. They aren't perfect, but compared to some periods, they're freaking great... So far at least.

Heh, I like the 2000s. Sure, we have the problem of electronics detaching us from the real world. However, simultaneously, we have the ability to stay in touch with friends, loved ones, etc, from unprecedented distances. Basically, it's a case of everything in moderation. You've got to balance the video games with going out and doing real things with real people. I have the advantage of my other addiction, Warhammer, requiring me to do that! So I'm set. But yeah, game obsessions can become a problem. Like that guy who made level 70 something like 36 hours after they released Burning Crusade.
*shudders*

Although, in my opinion, of course, one of the 2000's bad moments has been rap. Rap needs to die. At least, the rap we have now. Maybe it wasn't so bad in past decades.

Im not a great fan of music myself but some rap makes me shudder.
Why in gods name do you need to swear every 4 seconds to make a song?
The only real problem with electronics these days is that it doesnt just favor intellegent people, Idiots can pretty much play games with no difficulty.
in the past your options reading and playing computer were more limited , today its just too easy .Well computers are anyway

Recently they have even stopped trying more then usual.  Bionic woman is coming back.  We have Invasion (a remake of invasion of the body snatchers), and several other 'remakes' that they actually try to pass of as original.  I am sure more then a few will actually believe they are.  Songs are getting reused more (or 'sampled' more), and it is downright eerie when you can go to a movie and know how it ends 10 minutes into it.  You know when they remake War of the Worlds, they are getting desperate.

The problem is with thousands of tv channels, and movies studios only financing things they know will make money (for the most part) you are going to eventually only get regurgitated material.  Why come up with something new and different when another 'Superman' or 'Zombie' flick will make you millions?  Heck we are even getting burned out on so called reality tv.  (So called because it is edited and more then often scripted).  Those people who might actually have a original idea don't get a chance, their material isn't even looked at.

They say everything moves in cycles.  We are caught in the downward part of that cycle when it comes to creativity and original ideas.  The 'powers that be' are short sighted and as long as something makes money they will stick with it regardless.

I think 90s nostalgia with remakes are different things. One of my fav TV show during the 90s is The A Team. Despite it's mission-impossible sort of cases, I learnt a lot about teamwork from that movie. No matter how difference each member character is (BA, Face, Murdoch and the sylish leader Hannibal), when there is a goal, they unite.

But when it comes to remake, it's normally for between 3 decades or more, meaning it's meant for different generations. I don't mind if there's any issue on creativity-lacking vs money-making. Mostly I've never seen the original of the remake, so I'm quite happy with the latter. For example few yrs ago there was a movie U-571 (starred Matthew McDonaughey), I say it was good. I didn't know then that it was the remake of the same title by Wolfgang Petterson back in 70s (or 60s?) until later a TV station broadcasted the original. To me the remake was good; I don't care.

i really miss the 90s and i'm only 17
everything now seems a bit out of place, like the world's screwed itself relying far too much on computers, the internet and mobile phones
maybe its just part of growing up (lol i dont know ) but the 90s seems more and more like a "once upon a time" with every year passing
oh and i didnt have a lot of the problems i do now, i mean, my grandparents were alive and well, i didnt have to worry about school or work, i had heaps of fun watching all those cartoons in the morning (and now i dont have the time to watch them) and playing old games that wont even run on my computer anymore
i really miss the 90s lol

got knightrider on DVD from a friend, geeez, how much I missed that crappy show

Well, it still bugs me why do they make rambo/rocky/terminator 50 with eldery Stalone/VanDamme/Shwarzenegger instead of trying to make something new. I mean, those 90s films won't come back with a "20-years-later" remake, wake up hollywood and make something NEW >_>
