When do you build citadel, castle, and capitol?

Like it says, when is the best time to build those two buildings? I usually build them week two, before i do the lvl 6 and 7 dwellings. I just find it difficult to build high level dwellings so i go for more low level creatures. Are there any faction that are very different in the building order for those structures?

I also think that's the way to do it. You can't build level 6/7 dwellings in the 1st week given high town level requirement, not to mention lot of resources. Raising your money asap would be high priority. Structure like mage guilds etc that don't produce anything can wait.

If there's no fort I wait until week 3, there's the matter of building capitol too. Otherwise at least a citadel during week 2.

It also depends on map. If you know that there is a high risk that you will be rushed, you should probably go for castle and capitol early [if you have the money to buy troops to survive also]. On the other hand, in maps where I know that no enemy encounter will take place until late game (week 5-6), I postpone Capitol in favor of high-tier dwellings, because the early lack of gold will not be too important, as the units will just accumulate, and later visits to Utopias, Vaults etc. will allow me to purchase them in greater numbers later in the game.

I usually try to plan my building order in such a way that I build something every day. As all structures cost money (and creatures cost money as well), I usually try to get up to the Capitol as soon as I can. Of course, this also relates to getting the Creature dwellings up as well as Citadel / Castle, especially when a weekly turn comes up.

A Capitol may cost 10000 gold to build (8000 for Fortress), but since it increases daily income by 2000 gold, you break even after 5 days (4 for Fortress) and after that you only gain as opposed to not building it.

At times when I didn't do this, I felt myself coming short on money, wasting days where I didn't build anything, or found myself unable to recruit creatures, forcing me to wait with creeping vs. the higher Tier creeps on the map.

Yes, lvl5-7 dwellings(and the troops they produce) are geneally overpriced. It means that even if high tier dwellings are built then still their troops are last to be bought.

The best thing to do is to compare them.
For example all-mighty-killerus-invictus paladin vs marksmen
1 paladin = 1550 gold; 1 marksmen = 80 gold;
1 paladin = 1550 gold; 40 marksmen = 1600 gold

So what is better? 1 pala or 40 marksmen?
1 pala stats:
Attack: 24
Defense: 24
Damage: 20-30
Health: 100
Initiative: 12

Combined 40 marksmen stats:
Attack: 4
Defense: 4
Damage: 80-320
Health: 400
Initiative: 8

Combined 40 marksmen stats can be simplified to 1 big tier 6 creature(that is comperable to paladins) with stats:
Attack: 24 (+20 attack, so I divided damage by 2)
Defense: 24 (+20 defense, so I divided HP by 2)
Damage: 40-160
Health: 200
Initiative: 8

So, if short on money go for tier 1-4(and hopefully 1 tier more) and then(week2) build fort, citadel, castle.
Capitol is always worth it BUT it starts to pay off after 5 days. So, if too many fresh troops aren't needed badly or nothing big(like rushing opponent) will happen during those 5 days - buy it. After 5 days of functioning capitol(compared to a previous city hall situation - "only" 2k a day) start giving additional +2k a day.

It pretty much depends on your cash flow, castle week 2 and capitol week 3, means you'll be delaying the recruiting until week 4 or so. This means you're quite vulnerable to rushes...

Yes, there is little arguing against the mathmatics of this analysis - however, sometimes I actually find that delaying Capitol a bit can be of use - in the short run, it means less money, but if I can pull it off for a while, in the long run it might not be a problem, and then it might mean more units available in late game. For instance, letting go of those 6000 gold by delaying for, say, 3 days, is a loss, but if I instead use the money to buy a week's worth of troops that allow me to creep better to get mines, access to resource stacks and artifacts, and experience, it might be worth it, because I otherwise wouuld be forced to sit still and wait - and sometimes, time is even more precious than gold when it comes to making it first to certain keypoints in the map.

I build(or try to) all income buildings in mintime.  like has been pointed out capitol repays itself very quickly, and you want one anyway, so ur just throwing 2000 gold out the window everyday ur late on getting it.

So this is pretty different from heroes 3?  I'm no expert in heroes 3 but there is a long thread up in the forum there about how going for capitol first is not a good move.

Certainly I agree with the feeling in this thread that I do better at buying creatures when I have it.  It isn't so much trouble to get the basic dwellings.

Capitol first wasn't a smart move most of the time. First of all you needed so army for the creeping on week 2 and if the map was rich it was even better to go for tier 7 say angels and forget the capitol for a few days. Anyhow when you built capitol asap you were vulnerable to rushing if you put aside creeping. In maps with many opponents city hall was the most realistic expectation for a while.

yeah map resources and all depends on time and order youll build these in.  usually ill save capitol for week 3 since most times theres no fort to start with, and ill have citadel in second week.
anyone without citadel in week 2 is asking to die imo lol
and normally i think its better to build capitol before lvl 6-7 tier
since they are expensive like someone already said but again it depends on map resource a lot if your thinking to speed these buildings up.  also, between lvl 6 and 7 tier...i play academy and normally ill have one or the other, usually titan since that more fits how i like to play but it holds true for most factions that youll take 1 or the other early game.

If you don't start with fort and there aren't any chests around, citadel before capitol is a bad idea.

i do see your point as the money wont be enough to support the growth but, i guess the map would have to be pretty dry and usually even if it is kinda "unresourcfull" id rather have the stock accumulating in their, even with factoring the rush.
If rush is good enough, i might just bust a heroes 2 and drop them resources on the market and buy me some quick slaves lol

It's probably for the restrictions that I dislike the townlevel concept.

On one hand, it's an interesting, new, fun, and logical addition.

On the other hand, it forces a player to build in a fairly strict patern. You can no longer go full money or full creatures right away, by the time you can build a tier 7 dwelling you probably have built the City Hall as well to accumulate enough town points. I find this quite a shame, you no longer have the option of screwing up your economics drasticly if you wanted to
