Log Book
I know you can check everything what you did in some old turn from save file but wouldn't you like to have same sort of "history" option like Civilazation games have?
It would show different the map from high in map view and you could see how every turn was made from all players.
It would also have little text box which would tell what you did in that turn like:
"Bought 20 x from town x with x resources "
"Flagged goldmine in place x"
This way you could easily go through what has happened during game and also discuss with others what went wrong and things like that.
You could also save it for later as it's own file and keep it safe for later. Then you could always remember the first game or the best game you played with HoMM.
Game keeps this information anyway in some sort of way so it would need only program to record those things up and then later show those things to player.
Small idea how you could better follow your game from start to finish. And learn from your mistakes or celebrate your correct choices.

A logbook is a nice idea yet I think that few people would bother to implement this aspect due to their confidence in making all the right moves all the time.
In HOMM, you always know the mistakes that you make. The mistakes are the big things that cost you dragons on day 7 and cause you to lose all your shooters during a battle.
I would like to see a log, but a very simple one that allows me to see on which day of which week a particular town was conquered by me, or a win/loss record for my heroes during the course of the game. And of course, which heroes they fought. Detail greater than this is unecessary as the important things in HoMM that interest those of us who are historically minded are the fall and recapture of castles and our battles against the enemy.
Yes I like this idea. I liked it in Civ and it was great fun to read in Railroad as well. NWO might have to ask Sid Meier for permission though!

Railroad Tycoon...
I loved that game. Still I didn't find the new versions so nice as that first one. If I would got back in time I would play that game even more than I did.
However...I disagree on that logbook shouldn't contain too much detail.
I think if there would be filter that for Battles/town conquering/buildings/resource gatherings /and stuff like...It could contain very detailful things how the game is played.
If the problem is that it would teach people the "right moves" I think we shouldn't have log for chess either then?
I think if game is detailed enough and it has diversity in tactics and there are random factors there isn't need for fear of "only right moves".
So it's much more gameplay and balance issue than logbook problem issue I think.

That would be neat...
but you'd have to have options for the logbook (Include Town battles, Include battles with other players, Include battles with neutral, Include resource pick-up, Include location visit/flagging, Include enemy sighted, etc.). I wouldn't care about much beyond battles with neutral heroes and other players and enemies sighted, although I think some people would like to see every detail of the game.
