Poll Question: Spell schools for H6?
Ive been thinking of this poll for a while now. Now that Tote is out we should start thinking about the spell schools we want. Or more specifically in relation to this poll how many we want.
In my defination theres two kinds of spells schools
Normal- Any faction excluding the only might one(if any) can learn these. they have spells that benefit some more then others but for the most part all the schools are good.
I want these spell schools
Destruction
Confusion
Dark
Light
Enforcement
Sacrifice
Confusion would be related roughly to messing up the mind of an enemy or (if you like) yourself. this can increase morale in general or cause an enemy to attack others or cause him to fall asleep or run away. part of the old dark really
Destruction- Same as ever.Lightning bolts and damaging spells.
Dark- Would be changed to be an in battle necromancy/damage over time system. And you would be able to restrain enemies and demoralize them and so on
Light- Also the same. healing spells or general buffs to attack defense and percentage of damage reduces.
Enforement-Would be a out of game spell system that would still cost mana but would do things like make your workers gather resources faster or create units faster.Would also allow taxpaying from all creatures (Would only "act" like a spell school. As in you need mental energy to use it. however it doesnt actually need magic as such except for making tiers of creature growths go faster)
Sacrifice- Using up your units to give bonuses to the rest of them or getting rid of a certain number of hitpoitns of a stack to create a powerful new unit.
Second type of school is racial specific spell schools. I want 4 of these.
Acedemy- Should have a sort of all spell schools bundled into one skill which would give you all tier 4 spells of 6 tiers (id want six tiers in heroes 6, but theres still only three levels of skills you need to get so 3 for the first 2 for the second 1 for the third skill ups)At the highest level.
Haven- Would have a special ressurection and divine intervention (no not skill) kind of magic. Would allow limited ressurection at a lower level and more skills like benediction and fortifying yourself before a battle (like waste a day to gain +1 initiative for the next battle)
Dwarves- Runes.
Orcs- Warcrys.
So tell me what you think. How many spell schools? How many special ones? how many normal?

I think I explained my favourite magic system for a Heroes 6 elsewhere before, but since I like to rant about my ideas, I'll just post it here again Forgive me.
Personally I'd like to see a combination of the H3 and H5 spellschools, making 8 in total: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Dark, Light, Destructive, and Summoning. Each spell would be featured in 2 of these magic schools; one elemental school and one specialized school. For example, Fireball would be within Fire and in Destructive. Resurection would be within Light and Earth. Etc.
So, a hero would be able to learn a spell from studying either of the two schools. But here's the fun part: A spell's effect should be additionally boosted when the hero knows BOTH of its schools. This, in my opinion, creates more dynamic strategies. It would not only make mages more powerfull, but it would also make it easier for might heroes to choose a single magic school.
For example, Demonlords (tough choice between Dark and Destructive) would go for Fire instead, which would feature most destructive spells and curses. Warlocks, on the other hand, would go off with Destructive to begin with, and go for either Fire or Earth depending on the spells offered and which road they wanna take. Fire: Fireball, Armageddon, various curses. Earth: Meteor Shower, Implosion, Resurection... Of course they could surprise their opponent and go for Air or Water even - which can be a lot more fun since these days when you encounter a Warlock, it isn't hard to guess what he has. Destructive, DUH!
Picking schools is easy now, but I would like the longer range of options that this sort of system could bring. It just sounds fun!
I like the idea of faction-based schools as well, like in Heroes 4. But that takes away dynamics I think, as factions become predictable since you KNOW what spells to expect. What I WOULD like though, would be factions perhaps favouring certain spells, granting their heroes an increased effect in it or something. Such as Resurection for Haven, and Meteor Shower for Dungeon.
Warcries for orcs are ok though. Even though I think they shouldn't focus too much on it... They could just do with a weak level 3 mage guild or something just as well. Warcries I would sooner like to see as a creature's ability, not spells cast by the hero.
Unfortunately, my liking of those 8 magic schools combined hasn't met with much support around here xD

Well i thought of suggesting subskills for each school. Id Make Arcane the primary school then Summoning Destructive and Twilight and then Creature summoning, Roadblocks and Resource summoning and for destructive fire Earth and Air and for Twilight Light dark and twilight itself.
But i thought, Noone would be likely to think of enough spells for this to work. So i didnt think the idea was good as a proposal for itself.
And like your idea you could be able to cast a dark spell that boost the power of a undead summoned creature for example. Theyd work in synergy

I like Moonlith's idea very much - it would be really nice to see something like that in Heroes for a change. I can see it working in the game, but only if the maximum number of heroes' secondary skills gets expanded so it would be possible to pick other skills than magic ones. Also, the experience needed to level up should be reduced on later levels. That would be the system I'd like to see in H6.

Even tho it was a rippoff of Magic the gathering System, Heroes 4 had by far the best magic system.
I would like to have that 5-color system back.
Alternatively, we could have magic system from Might and Magic RPG games, which had:
Sorcery schools:
Fire
Earth
Water
Air
Cleric schools:
Mind
Body
Spirit
High level schools:
Light
Dark

Heroes 4 had a nice gimmicky sort of system. But some schools were overpwoered. One school had steal all enchantments which would make life useless because you could just all the buffs off everyone. And you could hypnotise an enemy and then sacrifice him to raise your own for example. And there were a lot of spells youd use twice and then never use again. Like summon leprechuan for example..
Oh and incinerate on an enemy hero meant he might never survive it unless he had magic resistance.
The alternative sounds better unless they redo the whole heroes 4 magic system

It would depend on how the skill system works. If it works like in Heroes 3 then I would have the Might and Magic schools: Fire, Earth, Water, Air, Mind, Body, Spirit. But I would make it so that higher level spells require more than one spell school. For example, Meteor Shower would require both Air and Earth, Deflect Arrow would require Air and Body, Resurrection would require Earth, Body, and Spirit, Armageddon would require Air, Fire, and Earth, etc.
