Port forwarding

Just reinstall HOMM3 and my friend was having trouble connecting to me for a TCP/IP game. After searching I found that port 6073 needed to be open(I think) but even then he still couldn't connect. In the end I used DMZ and he connected.

I'm not real keen to use DMZ so what ports need to be open to play a TCP/IP game?

TIA

Thanks I figured there would be a 'how to' on here somewhere but couldn't find it. Needless to say even with the required ports opened my friend still can't connect, back to DMZ it seems.

Are there any other ports required to be open, apart from the ones listed here?

I'm sure when I use to play ages ago I never had to use DMZ to host a multiplayer game

I don't play regularly online any more, but I remember that quite recently I had similar problems in GameSpy. I just couldn't set up TCP/IP games for some reason (although in the past I had no problems either in zone or gamespy). So, my solution to the problem instead of enabling DMZ (since the ports you have opened are the ones and are correct), was to use Hamachi.
I never actually figured out why this happened. In the mean time I had changed provider and router, so one of the two was the one to blame I guess, since the ports are simply those mentioned (and were entered in the new router as well ). Nothing else, nothing more... Moreover, I've seen other friends of mine having trouble set up TCP/IP games in between (say players A, B, C, and D) as follows: We can not start TCP/IP simultaneously all 4. However, there are matchings, e.g. B and D and A and C, which work ... Probably this has something to do with servers used by various providers. If you try to tracert / traceroute one of your friends' IPs you will realize that in this modern messy super-wow-connected-world, there are servers along the way that won't respond to your request (try it and you'll see what I mean). Meaning? I don't know ... But it seems that you can not see a route from your computer to your friend's computer. Probably, this wasn't the case some years ago (but I really don't know what was the case...). Probably, some ISPs, in order to lower the budget try to be super-cautious and set those servers to ignore such requests. This might make them more fault tolerant.
But probably this plays some role in the communication between different computers (based on different providers) when you play Heroes ...
However, I have experienced all these when I actually want to use TCP/IP over Internet.
Never had a problem setting up TCP/IP game with my LAN...
In which case do you belong? Do you want to use TCP/IP on your LAN, or over Internet (players in different houses)?

Players over the internet. I also looked at this thread which list more ports namely 47624.
Now I just tried to open this port and my router won't allow it "says duplicate port error".
I checked the port here and it says it's closed.

Closed is fine, it just shouldn't be on "stealth".
