Pause Problem
Hey all,
So the story is that I had misplaced my copy of Heroes III, a heresy I know, and so I picked up a new copy of Heroes III Complete. The problem is that when I play the game it pauses about every five seconds for a second or two. This is highly annoying in game play, and especially in battles. It is like the computer is getting locked up, or needs to think for a moment. I don’t really understand why I am having this problem because the computer I have now is faster and has more memory than the one I used to run Heroes III on. I have Windows XP now, so that might have something to do with it. Anyway, does anyone have any ideas?

An active antivirus scanner? Personally when I play BG2 I have to disable it in order for the game to rum smoothly. Check taskmanager.

I looked at both of those things, and they are not the problem. I am now having the same problem with my copy of Heroes II, which was running just fine before I installed Heroes III. I think some setting got changed with Windows XP in the installation of Heroes III that is messing everything up.

Try running H3 in windowed mode with taskmanger->processes sorted by cpu usage next to it.
Brainstorming: lack of hd space, lack of memory, sound driver (does the sound pause as well?). Have you done a complete install including the latest patch?

Ecoris: He has Heores Complete so there aren't any patches.
ThorGN: Have you tried making an image on the HD and playing without the CD?
I always thought H3 was a very stable game when played on pre-WinXP systems. It was extremely rare to get any kind of crashes or other problems.

Right, saying something like "have you got the latest patch?" is just a very usual reply, I wrote without thinking too much about it even though I know very well that there have been no patches after complete.

I know It was more directed at him so he doesn't spend hours looking for patches that don't exist.

It looks like I am having the same problems with other programs as well, and my computer is generally slower than it was a week ago. So I am beginning to think that is it a system problem, rather than a problem with the game. Perhaps it was just coincidence, or something the game did set the real problem off. The chances of figuring out what is really going on are slim, so I will probably just re-image my compy and see what happens. Thanks for the ideas though.
