Quote: If you face a swift faction you may really wish you could cast blind/frenzy/puppet or summoning spells faster. Yes, initially you want mass curses but they are not what will determine the battle.
In some previous games / campaigns I experimented with the summoning spells (both elemental and phoenix). I was disappointed in them. Although both sets of creatures were substantial additions, it took far too long for them to materialize. In addition, not having control over what sort of elemental stack was a bother. I never did figure out the terrain/type relationship.

How can anyone be disappointed in Phoenix... I just canīt understand. That bird is nasty on the battlefield
Elementals on the other hand have given some bad experiences as well, sometimes Earth Elementals take ages to get a turn. Air Elementals are usually good, because they are so fast. Fire Elementals are second best, or actually when you have +30 of them they ARE the best. In lower numbers Water Elementals rule supreme.
Fire Warriors perk make this spell very good, because then you know what you will be getting - and you know when it is good to cast it. Sorcery works very well with Summoning, Destructive and now in TotE quite well with Dark, because there are Sorrow, Blind, Frenzy, Vampirism, Puppet Master and Curse of Netherworld that benefit from Sorcery.

To keep it simple - Expert sorcery gives you 3 spells in the same time as a hero without makes 2. Crucial for a real spellcaster.
The abilities and special abilites on the other hand - Counterspell can be useful, and Distract is OK, but it soesn't beat the ATB discount.
And when it comes to the Phoenix - I totally agree - it is a very effective spell. Not only as pure power, but you can creep with almost no troops
ToE Campaign Spoiler: I struggled a bit against Orlando in the Necro campaign, but as soon as my fiery flying friend was up summoned - it was goodbye for that Demon lord

I agree that the phoenix is a nasty creature. My problem is that it seems that by the time he gets into action, the battle is essentially over. Most of my battles seem to last only a few turns.

More like 4 spells while the enemy makes 3. I've found counterspell to be rather useful against Dark Magic, as it allows you to null the effect instantly, rather than waiting for your next turn to cleanse. Unfortunately, it's rather ineffective against Mass Spells (Counterspell isn't a spell, thus takes a whole turn) and it's only viable with a considerable mana pool.
Distract on the other hand has a considerable slowing effect on Mass spell casting.
