ENOUGH!
I'm sick and tired of this. I feel like the community is this great mass of creative energy, and yet when we try to make something, we can't, because Nival made the Editor and the Game this impregnable fortress that it is almost impossible to mod anything substantial with. Thus, I am drafting a letter to Nival, and I would like help as to what to put in it. Basically it goes like this:
Dear Nival,
We Modders of Heroes Community have been very impressed with the Heroes V games you have been making. However, now that Tribes is out, we realize that there will be no new Heroes games for at least two years. We can make maps for eachother till the metaphorical cows come to the metaphorical home, but we can't play eachother's maps for two years. If the game is going to have any longevity to last the stretch until Heroes 6, we will need to mod the game, and have fun adding things to it. We can retexture, but we can't resize. We can make make maps but not models. We can Edit Stats but we can't Switch Effects. As such, we ask you to help us. No, we beg you to help us. Teach us how to change the game, or provide us with necessary programs/updates to the editor.
-a program to convert the model files to .3ds / .wrl and back again
-@WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT, FILL IN HERE@
This is our plea, our cry for change. Deliver us, and yourselves. Let Heroes V live. Forever.
Heroes Community.

Give patch 3.1 a chance.
If it still sucks, id add that id very much like a couple of set scripting functions. Nothing fancy. Teleportation, troop removal and addition and text boxes.
I found the editor to be terrile with scripting but not so bad with actual mapmaking. After you know where the unit properties button is everything becomes a lot easier.

I certainly don't need any mods for my game of heroes to be enjoyable even after 10 years. i agree that editor should be beter but i couldn't care LESS about modding.
And I'm sure plenty of ppl think the way I do, so it would be really unfair to signature this letter as "heroes community".

These can be done through scripting in the current form. Or are there any specific things you like to accomplish for which you can't seem to get the scripting working? I would like to see where you're being blocked .
Personally, I would like to see two things possible:
- Use a script command to *build* a town building. It's currently possible to downgrade a town, but not to upgrade a town;
- Add upgraded versions to external Dwellings, or at least allow them. In the current form, you can add up to 7 creatures to an external Dwelling, but base creatures and their upgrades will each take a separate slot instead of being on the same line. In addition, allow a Hero's creatures to be upgraded there, too, just as it happens in Towns;
I have yet to examine a number of new script commands, but I know already that the above things are impossible in the current game.

Yes, I completely agree with the letter. We should be able to modify our favourite game more easily.

Great idea! Ask them to make less things hard coded such as I want to modify Spells and if we can create Abillities, we can create a Faction Less things hard coded would mean a lot more modding possibilities. And we should be able to add new buttons to the Editor for tile Monsters hidden objects etc.

I agree that Nival could give us more information/tools. However, keep a few things in mind:
- a lot of people do not use mods, and will still play H5 a long time
- a lot of people (a lot more!) do not make mods
- asking for info or "quick fixes" to unlock some modding, or tools that they might use themselves already, is one thing. Asking them to re-architecture the whole game to allow more modding is quite another!
So, as Daystar asked for, there's only one way to contribute here if you agree: what would you like to know (more info), or be able to do (tools, remove some integrity checks)?
When collecting the wishes, Daystar should sort them into 2 lists: reasonable and challenging. For example, asking to be able to code new abilities through xdb files implies a huge work, if at all possible. While asking how to add a new creature without needing to patch the exe seems within the grasp of the current architecture.
On my list, I have this item I just mentioned:
- is there a way to add a new creature without needing to patch the exe? If not, could the integrity check be removed from the exe?

the thing is, you wouldn't even need a mod per se if they supplied an editor as powerful as, say, the Warcraft III one.
The only mods I've seen for the game were ones that completely replaced the basic races with custom ones, but custom models, units or even radically changed gameplay were no problem.
Essentially, that editor was the same that the devs used to make the campaigns.

C'mon, don't you see Nival wants to help us? H5 is the best modable Heroes game ever! Especially with TotE - that Ability section is just wonderful. I'd rather ask for help in so far avaible modding not rebuliding game engine.

It may not be the most moddable game ever made but it's a heck of a lot easier to tinker with than previous episodes in the series. I support the plea for the 3D model converter (every other 3D game has one dammit!), and maybe something to make new hero specialties and minor things like adding new Week and Month properties too. Otherwise I'm happy.

Ask teams of WoG and Equilibris how moddable are H3 and H4. At this point nobody will change game engine to satisfy all modders wishes. So leave your ideas for H6 or keep struggle with that you have ;-)
And I think that you have to address this letter to UBI, not to Nival.

*calls Aye!*
Model converter would be much desired It gives me a little playroom to experiment in! And I think many people would want to add in their own units.
As well to add in new custom factions.
I understand not everyone cares for this, but hey, at least the creative part of this community does
One tool which I'd like, is the ability to create custom and new HEROES. To choose a model, a faction it belongs to, custom design a special ability, chances for skills being given, statistics development, etc.

Today I found a function that does exactly this:
UpgradeTownBuilding("Town_Name",TOWN_BUILDING_type)
This builds the TOWN_BUILDING_type in the town with "Town_Name". Note that for buildings like the Mage Guild, you need to execute this command several times: once for each level of the structure.

Yes, it would be nice to be able to create, change, or modify skills. Add to that spells, artifacts, creatures, and even different 'towns' easily. There are some really interesting ideas, but some things just are not possible to do. I'd gladly sign this.

I disagree.
In a hardcore environment, you use what is given to you.
Using a Mod should be used to equal the fairness of the game.
There are usually mods that can be downloaded & created.
In a set of fairness then yea but for your own use then be patient.
It is great to have alot of options but usually it is set lopsided for one person.
