Statistic's or personality?
I've sometime's found myself to like certain heroes, or character's because of their story, or apearance.
I rarely like a character w/a boring apearance, unless he has outstanding statistic's. I usualy favoritize, and put alot of focus on "his/her" stat's, item's, and army strength.
All the way back from shadow runner (genesis), chrono trigger, and even bane/wizadry, I tend to favoritize, and work with the character.
Do you look at stat's, or personality with your character's?

stats?? what's that? :)
I like Mullich's speed, but after that, I am so shallow, I have a bad habit of putting good looking ones on my team.
I wish Milena was a choice, I'd even pick her over Mullich.

I may be boring, but it's stats or skills
I try to pick all my heros for specific reasons, be it gold or resource generation for scouts, scholar or diplomacy for my secondary heroes, or skills (or lack of bad skills) for my main heroes. On day one when buying the lot of heros I like to get a scholar, someone or two decent as possible mains (In case one gets crappy skills) mebe a lvl 4 spell or people with lvl 1 spells that my original guild doesnt have (like straker for haste, geon for slow ect.)and a diplomat (to mebe get some low lvl joiners for cannon fodder)
If i have 2 undesirable heros in tavern, ill usuually take the one that has a spellbook (saves money not having to buy one, and they might have a spell I need)

Stats - but I tend to pick Gem, Crag Hack, Lord Haart, or Sandro sometimes just because they've been in the series so long.
And I'll also pick Crag Hack because of stats.
Hoewver, sometimes I'll pick a hero with real weak stats just to try it out...
...so it is stats based mostly, but not necessarily good stats.
I mean, when I pick a hero, I'm thinking, "I want a hero with (insert specialty here."
Like one day I might want somone with Dragonflies as a specialty, so I'll pick whatshisname.

My priorities
1) For starting heroes, a good special. Also applies for secondary heroes if the special is gold or my main resource.
2) Good troops if it's a week 1 hero. I've had 150 Troglodytes with just two heroes on day 1 (I picked up Shakti with over 100). This also means that my first hired hero, unless it's a gold specialist, will always be my town type. If the hero starts with a Ballista, I almost always buy him/her just for the Ballista and pick up a few troops and a scout too.
3) Skills - Logistics and Scholar are skills that I prefer for secondary heroes.
4) Given a choice between two about equal heroes in the first three categories, I go with a spellcaster.

So, it's statistic's then?
When I go for additional heroes, it's mainly because it's to much movement for my character to pick up resource, and even mine's sometime's. I usualy hold out until I see a hero w/logistic's, scholar, or any resource as a primary skill.
My main point is however, I sometime's grow attached to character's. For instance. When I played chrono trigger, and had so many character's to chose from, I kept thon (my frog's name) because I grew attached, and the game wasn't impossible because I used him.
Same case w/Might and magic 8, shadow runner, final fantasy 7, castlevania 3, and other classic's.
I know I'm not the only person who pick's, and develop's character's because *I like they're persona.*

Well, in a role playing game it's easier to justify using someone because you think they're cool, but in a strategy game like Heroes, you don't even have the same hero for more than the handful of hours it takes to finish the scenario, and so it's best to choose who will be most useful to you.

Good point yo's
Right right, I hear that. But even in senarios, when you get to pick your hero.. There are cool one's you can pick, w/good skill's. Craig hack, lord heart, solymar, some of the devil's bla bla.. LoL The elven guy w/logistic's, the female w/ice ring..ect
I hear you all, I guess my prob is I'm focusing on "other game's" when I try explain my point.

In hmm, heroes don't have a very developed personality, like in some rpg (BG2 for instances, I really dislike Anomen) so I usually go for skills.

I don't think people really choose heroes because of how aesthetically pleasing they are to the eye unless you're a complete dweeb and have never played the game before.
Skills are primary, everything else is secondary. No use choosing a hero like Sephinroth with her +1 crystal each day when you have virtually no need for crystal at all.
The skills in some way define a character's personality anyway I think. Being the silly romantic that I am always think up little stories in my head that give reason to a heroes' specialty. And sometimes that story pans out to be true and you find yourself choosing that hero again and again, merely because you've become attached to the idea or notion that you know how to play with him/her better than anyone else does. We all have a way of creating false attachments to heroes even though the game itself can be so very cold and clinical.
I'm trying to roleplay out a map right now, with two of us partaking in roles as ruler of a realm and we're using our heroes to discuss diplomacy and resource exchanges. It's really nice, playing like this and referring to our heroes by name is refreshing! It is adding a better (if not measurable) dimension to our game and we're having a lot of fun slipping into roles as Kings and Queens.
Ever tried talking to your opponent as a geniune ruler? Might sound silly but it's a lot of fun really! Referring to your opponent as a character and having them respond likewise is one of those things that I think everyone should try.
Okay, now I have to get back to defending my border town from the clutches of Lord Haart who has laid siege to my fort...
Tell me my advisors what shall Shae do.....

My choice
It depends on the game.
In the heroes, specialty and secondary skills make me choose a hero. For example, I will always choose Mephala over Malcom because of their specialty, not of the class. All in all I'd go for magic heroes, even in the Stronghold. Gundala is a better choice over CH. Of course, I exclude the Alchemists who are more magic-related than the Battle Mages, let's say.
I already posted my long lists of favorite heroes. I usually pick up Adela or Cyra because of their secondary skills. It of course depends on the map too.
If we are talking about Might and Magic... now this is my weak point. I'd go for a Relic over Artifact if the relic fits the color of the equipment. I was very glad with MM7 because the best equipment was in blue. Only those silly relics didn't combine... unless we are talking about the Cleric.
*feels she's really offtopic*
Anyway, same thing goes for IWD. I'd buy more expensive helms, etc. if they are more beautiful. :-))

In might and magic..
Where all equipment look's different, I get upset when I find something that dosn't look as good, but has a higher defence value, or some better magical effect than something I have.
I try to keep everything red, silver, and black, (for example) with appealing design's.
I find that a great quality in a game. All equipment look's different.

Or Daggerfall! Never had more fun dressing character up in the most reidiculous outfits!
Well, in HOMM, stats weigh the heaviest, but it's a different feeling in the end game if your hero is a cool one (like Tazar!) or a really lame one (like Nimbus! HAHAHA!).
But in other games, e.g. FFVII, personality has a great impact. I hated that ***** Aeris from the first time I saw her, I always tried to get her into trouble and make her as weak as possible. Imagine my glee when she died! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I dont remember a whole lot about FF VII but..
That's a big one where people can pick character's they *like*. I used red dog (or whatever his name was) and the vampire (I used to be evil! LoL)..
A few occasion's, I worked with other character's, but only temporary for some reason or the other.
It's kinda sad how the cool character's end up more used in the end.
