Ah hah.. I just posted about this earlier! Baltista's, and how they are good. LMAO
I would pick baltista's, so if (like a snowball's chance in hell) I get slaughtered by the enemy to the point of retreat.. I'd keep my &^$%in' artifact's!

I'll take Ballistics, except for Barbs.  I don't really like artillery except for high attack heroes.  I'm still not impressed with being able to choose who I shoot during a Castle siege.  If a player is attacking me in my castle, then that usually means I'm in trouble.  One time, in BoB(god I hate that map), Troelsen wouldn't even let me out of my castle.  He parked a Gold Dragon right at my drawbridge and annihilated me with spells.  Teach me to play with the big boys on maps that they know.

With Artillery you will always be able to cast first when defending a castle as long as you have at least 1 tower shooting. This can win you the battle.

that can be REALLY helpful ... or the other way around with ballistics (catapult).
