Your National Anthem
This is the topic where you may post your national anthem.
Mine is American:
THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight'
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen, thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream;
'Tis the star-spangled banner: oh, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand,
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that has made and preserved us as a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust";
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Our national anthem was created by a poet named Francis Scott Keys.During the battle of Fort Mchenry FSK Thought the nation's flag was a gonner, but that flag was still there showing how strong we americans are.But FSK's poem wasn't origannly called the star spangele banner.

The national anthem here is far from loved, but here it is:
Advance Australia Fair
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"
When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Brittannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains the let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
GAH
[rant]I hadn't read all the verses before, now I really hate it
Tis time for Australia to seperate from the poms and get our own flag and anthem.[/rant]
Here's a proposal for an anthem
Land Down Under Lyrics
» Men At Work
Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,
"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,
"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

The US National Anthem sucks. The lyrics were written by a very amateur wannabe poet. And the music is a really bad old drinking song - I don't know what they were drinking when they sang it, but I'm convinced it didn't have any alcohol in it. Boooooring!!!
Bottom line is that musically the song is absolutely terrible and I wish they would change it.
lol, yea, "Land Down Under" is a good song. That would be a great anthem for Australia, but you know all the straight laced, button up types would never allow it. If the Ausies actually made that the anthem, I think I'd move there.

Best National Anthem I've ever heard was New Zealand's during the Rugby World Cup. And that was before they did their freaking hakka. Great anthem? Manly Maori war dance? Unbeatable.

I looked up the US anthem and was surprised it's only been the anthem since 1931. So tradition isn't long enough to use that as an excuse for keeping it.
Another thing that surprised me is that the part we know and hear is only 1/4 of the entire thing. The whole song is only played for very formal occasions.
I just found this. It's supposed to be MP3 recordings of national anthems from around the world. I couldn't get it to work, but maybe someone else will have better luck
http://www.national-anthems.net/
edit: OK, I made it work. That site is really poorly designed though.
On the map, click on the continent.
Click on the country (on the left where the flag is)
forget the Real Audio and Windows Media thing, they don't work.
Just below that click where it says "MP3 of National anthem size xxxKB"
In the blue box click on "Instrumental Anthem of country" to stream, or right click to save.

America the Beautiful
Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward
MIDI sequencing provided by Melody Lane
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!
O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!
O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!
You are thinking of this correct? Not our national anthem, but easily could be .

The Star Spangled Banner is the national anthem "Oh say can you see"
America the Beautiful is just a song "Oh beautiful, for gracious skies"
edit: whoops, crossed posts
Here's the entire national anthem. Until today I only knew about 1/4 of this.
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen thro’ the mist of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
’Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner, in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our Trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Hendrix got sued when he played the American national anthem at Woodstock. (or at least that's what rumor says)
He also played God Save the Queen at the Isle of Wight concert in England, but I don't think he got sued for it.

The Israeli anthem is written in an old complicated Hebrew, thus it's very difficult to translate it to English. Besides, many of the words on it don't even exsist in English. So my translation is not excellent, but it gives the main idea.
The Hope
In the heart, inside,
Jewish soul is excited.
Towards the east edge, forward,
The eye is looking towards Zion.
Our hope hasn't begone yet.
The hope is two thousand years old.
To be a free nation in our land,
Land of Zion, Jerusalem.
To be a free nation in our land,
Land of Zion, Jerusalem.
The Hope was written by Naftali Heartimber. It is sung very slowly and it has a sad melody. It refletcs many strong emotions. Some people even cry when they hear it.
Expressions:
"The east edge"-The Western Wall in Jerusalem
"The hope is two thousand years old" - More than two thousand years ago, the Jewish nation was exiled from Israel.
"Zion"-Another name for Jerusalem or Israel.
