actually RedSoxFan, they are pretty much the same topic ... because my primary incentive in playing all these maps is to find the maps I enjoy (and others too). It's a search for "the best maps".
Destro, you took the words out of my mouth about random maps. The more paths you clear, the luckier you get (besides diplomacy).
lately I played a couple DIFERENT yet fun maps: "infernal divide" <-- made by Vesuvius and "Conflict over Atlantis".
Conflict over Atlantis is one I'd recommend ... however, when I played it, I found ANGELIC ALLIANCE from a shipwreck survivor.
So, to be fair, I sacrificed it on the altar and gained 31,500 experience.
IMPORTANT: READ THE SIGNS ON THIS MAP, or you may end up fighting 100 Arch-Devils.
I also recommend Vesuvius' map. It's funny. But there's no taverns except in the middle town, so it makes the strategy interesting. You MUST NOT lose your heroes, because every one is important.
So far my personal favorites are: universal commander; 7 lakes; and boomerang.

Why dont you save these maps in SOD format
If you have Complete or SOD, I can't understand why you dont save these maps in SOD format before you play them.
I would have unloaded SOD from my machine long ago if you didnt have this option that does not allow for any combo's to be pre-built.
Just a thought in that you keep mentioning finding AA on these maps
(BTW Waiting to hear if you guys like Diamondhead, one of my favorite maps_

LOL Zud, ya beat me to it
Only time I played Conflict over atlantis, Slow_worm got Thant, geee I had precisely 0 chance, specially since he got Navigation from a hut. But a very funny little map, where u get to use boats a little more
And disable that SOD thingy, I dont even play AB, coz I find Conflux to unbalancing.

Style of Maps
I prefer open maps over closed maps because, a closed map often doesn't allow you to see your opponent for more than one battle in a game. Which is kinda boring. It's more fun to have a mini-battle among scouts once in while and see what your opponent is doing. Closed maps I don't like. In West vrs. East, which relic artifacts determine the game from luck. But also the host can edit map and get whatever artifacts they want without having to worry about the opponent getting it instead.
