I think somewhere between the first picture (Which looks awesome, Kingdom Under Fire you said? I'll look for a demo) and what we have now. I don't want it to be utterly dark and brutal. I kindof like the feeling right now, it's a bit like Heroes II. But right now, to quote a review,
"It looks like someone dumped a Gay Pride parade into our monitors!"
which is fairly accurate. The game could get a bit darker. Nothing against gay pride.

H5 art is really good and i like most part of it. Some people have criticized creatures to be too "cartoonish" but i don't know is that the case. Some things works for somebody and some don't. I personally can't stand Academy line up but it's not because of the Gay Parade colors.
Heroes looks pretty good in H5 but i think all creatures should also be stylish imo even if they are low level creatures. There are only 1 creature (and it's upgrade/s) of single creature and it should portrait that group whit best possible way. I have no idea why did they portray Peasants and Zombies as fat and lazy looking creatures in H5. Heroes 2 is best example where all creatures looked really nice and you could consider each of them as an fighter.
Textures could be bit darker, higher contrast maybe but there is already very good looking line ups like Sylvan and Inferno. Towns and Adventure Map works like a charm, only what i would like to see improved is Creatures models to be more thrilling and exiting, strong individuals.

yeah, i agree that the game is too light and a little cartoony, i want it to return to the magical H3 feel, but still keep it 3D. i don't really know about the army tho... i mean like, the game would be extremely slow if it had to tell all 1K of peasants to do a different thing(making it realistic), but, it would enhance the game itself really well.

Dude, do you ever get tired of political correctness?
I don't have anything against cartoony graphics. But maybe they could try something darker, just for a change.

something a little darker will take it into warhammer territory, and i'm sure that we don't want that.
but any more cartoony, and we end up with a turn based warcraft.
i personally like the balance that nival and Ubi have struck here.

Keep the cartoonish style. heck, i wouldn't care if its same engine, just bring in more new content.
I didnt like disciples transition from cartoonish to gothic styleso im pretty sure i would feel the same if heroes do it.

I really love the H5 style look but I would go for a bit more darker artistic perspective. the first pic is a good example.

Please, please, slash the ridiculous Disney mashed with Anime look of H5.
If it's the only thing you do.
It's disgusting to look at, what was wrong with the amazing art of H3?
And I really don't see why the graphics can't be amazing. They are exceptionally poor quality in H5 and that's (AFAIK) a newer game than KUF which looks much better.
Now people yadda yadda on about how dont need graphics you need gameplay; but why not both?!
Really. It's not that hard to run a TBS game; there's not alot going on at once, you can at least make it look nice.

The Disciples II look was very good. Someone said that the transfer from cartoony to gothic was bad i think otherwise. That made the game darker and added a specyfic climate. But I dont think that sort of change would be good for heroes. I really liked the first 3 games IV was something different but not bad and V is a step forward if you compare it to IV. But my favourite remains the III. You could keep that sort of style but with better graphics

I'd say, return the H3 looks. Something like H3 with a faint mixture of H4 mixed in. Both had a great magical atmosphere that went missing in H5.
By the way, one could argue 3D adds to the lesser magical feeling, since 3D textures can never compete with 2D details.

2D detail can be totally outmatched by 3D. There are some great games as examples and some cool 3D engines that really do the right job and could add that Heroes magic. I don't understand what all of you understand by H3 looks but I would really go for a more darker/serious look regarding the troops and towns. I have to admit that the adventure map must be full of color(and detail) and that goes for the magic too. The spells really look cool in H5. My honest opinion.
Good luck.

A great example of the Detail thing is in Fantasy Wars. So detailed that I am content to just sit and watch units as they stretch, yawn, shrug, relax, lie down, get back up again, and of course fight.

Here is another interesting option (granted don't think would happen)
Go with more of J-style (Japanese).
Now befoe all the tourches start to burn, I don't mean Chibi Anime style. I am thinking more of the semi-realistic fantasy look, as supported by Final Fantasy 10+
some screenshots...
Its not as cartoony (or comic book-ish).. yet still not the full realistic grimd look of Disciple...
Well.. just adding some words to the disccussion... enjoy

I do not agree with your view actionjack.. I really don't. I hate anime (despite everybody loves them) and I hate all that japanese cartoon crap, despite the fact that they have a strong culture and nice overall stuff. that look will not fit in the homm universe imo.
Another thing is that there are more examples to give besides anime and Disciples.
I would say Havok engine, Oblivion look or something dark and serious.
Or they could use a modified Unreal engine 3 because it's not that spec consuming and it runs great.

Well.. I never suggested the Anime look.
However, many asian games (J-style or K-style), which are not anime style, still carry a flavor of its own, much different from the ultral-reality style or comic book style that is seen in many American or European games.
Nice found Lord_evil... guess they are already making H6.. wow...
(and does seem a bit like asian-style.. in that dark elf. very similar to dark elf of Linerage?!
