My favorite build is the following:
Barbarian: Kragh "the pounder" (hero's attack deal +5% damage/level)
==Phase 1==
You will try to get the "Excruciating strike" as soon as possible. This will allow your hero to creep efficiently by reducing the initiative of your enemies and dealing good damage. If everything goes according to plan, you should get the excruciating strike by level 6.
In your town, concentrate on building your dwellings and skip completely the hall of trial. The centaurs will be the backbone of your army during this phase of the game. You may want to upgrade them. During combat, you will have a free hit at the begining. On your next turn, place the "Powerfull blow" ability on your centaurs. From now on, your hero will hit approximately twice per round. Use your goblins in small stacks (1-3) to shield your centaurs. I usually leave the remaining goblins out of the combat.
Primary skills: Attack (expert level), Blood rage, Leardership
Secondary skills: Powerfull blow, Stunning blow, Excruciating strike, Memory of our blood
==Phase 2==
You will now try to increase the number of times your hero hits the ennemy per round. To do so, you will focus on the "Empathy" ability: each time a moral effect is triggered on your units, your hero will move forward. You may reach it by level 10 if you are lucky. Level 12-15 is more likely.
Primary skills: Leardership (expert level), Blood rage
Secondary skills: Diplomacy, Empathy, Memory of our blood, Might over magic
In your town, you will now try to build the house of spirits dwelling and its upgrade. I really like to use my Earth daughters against high level creatures. Slowed units are unable to retaliate and they obtain interesting abilities with blood rage. You will also try to improve your fortifications and the hall to increase your revenue.
==Phase 3==
It is now time to rush your opponent. Take a last trip to your city and buy a level 3 taliman to obtain Summon creatures. At this level, your hero is now a killing machine. You may go for Logistics to reach quickly your enemy or you may try to counter its magic with anti-magic skills. You may also take Enlightenment to increase your attack.
At level 20, Kragh is able to kill 4 devils in one blow! His attack on the combat field is overpowered:
* +100% damage at level 20
* 30% chance to deal double damage
* Hero units are pushing him forward with Empathy
* Powerfull blow triggers a free attack
* -0.1 on the initiative of the victim

That's a cool one for sure Had thought about it at some time but did not get to play Kragh in a long time so it's been flaming arrows for my last few games. Hasting a fast unit can also help getting more good morale actions.
What I like about stronghold is the option to focus on your hero, units or ballista through attack skill. However the former is worth it only late in the game and excruciating strike is not much of an option without Kragh or so I feel.

Some fun with academy can be had with empathy, sorcery, destructive and summoning. Blazing fast casting Or dark instead of destructive.
With motw you can keep spamming curses/summoning obstacles like there is no tomorrow.

Empathy is a real booster for a hero. Especially since the limit for positive morale has been removed.

It's not removed, it remains at 5. It's just harder for the opponent to lower it if you are loaded with morale arties.

I uploaded a battle replay of Kragh (lvl 23) assieging Deleb (lvl 19). Kragh deals most of the damage during the combat. In one blow, he kills 4 devils (~800 points of damage)

Here's a strategy with academy:
Dark magic-For this tactic I just get it on exp lvl
Sorcerery-Counterspell
Logs-Swift Mind
Leadership-Empathy+Artificial Glory
Enlightment-U need it for Empathy and Swift Mind. Also is a very nice skill.
Lets begin With the aid of Swift Mind cast MotW fast on a strong enemy unit. Then ur second cast is PM or Frenzy And Artificial Glory + Empathy will work very nice Third casting - Countespell This one wrecks havoc It got my opponent out of his skin
Edit: Even a hero skilled in light magic won't be able to handle that

aside from logistic and leadership being 2%-skills you need 2 turns to cast MotW and PM Frenzy, by this time enemy army will be mixed with yours, and PM does not work with MotW (just like summoned elementals does not stack). however two frenzied stacks are pain in the a**.

yeah, my mistake
Edit: Try this strategy, give up swift mind and take teleport assault. Take dark(master of mind), leadership(empathy for which u require enlightment(nice) and glory) or sorcerery and attack(power of speed and retribution if u take leadership. Frenzy ur strongest creature and teleport it with assault effect + retribution + big morale + luck from arties and mini-arties + frenzy with decent SPP will be devastatin' Also Mass slow + mass haste big time As Forest001 said it "pain in the a**"
Edit2: Added another strategy with academy. U'll find it at the beginning of the topic, the academy part.
Edit3: Added strategy with necropolis, in the necro part.

Someone to say something?
Edit: Here's a strategy with necro vs wizard with destructive:
Destr. magic-Sap Magic
Defense-Protection
Sorcerery-Boneward
Other skills are dependant on u. Btw I tried this vs Nathir and it drove my opponent crazy. Oh, and keep an eye for the crystal ice shield

Elven lucky spells strat:
One improbable strategy that I haven't even tested but who knows it might work
Get sorcery/arcane exaltation + luck/warlocks luck
and as much as possible of the following:
imbue arrow + rain of arrows + imbue balista + expert destructive.
My bet is it will get you lucky spell casts on your imbued arrows
