For Dirael, Swift Mind and Wasp Swarm sound pretty good with Imbue, but you don't always get the creature combos you want for Avenger. What is tried and true though, omg, is Swift Mind and Phantom Forces on your Crystal Dragons with her. High Druids will pump up her Spellpower(which makes the Phantoms act more quickly) and Sorcery to give you more Phantoms.
As far as 2% skills are concerned, sdfx awhile ago showed how you can get much better odds for those skills.
Edit: Played with Inferno the other day and got my Grok up to level 25. Ugh, not once was I offered Swift Mind, not once. Pathfinding it looks is the last skill you want to have if you're trying to go the Swift Mind route.

If u want to find some more weird strategies see my thread "Might of magic - turning magic into might". There are some good with haven, sylvan for example. I'll keep this thread up anyway.
@The_Gootch
I've played with dungeon and got soldier's luck on lvl 4. Then warlock's luck showed at last on 28 lvl!!!

I was just about to try that naadir necro strat. About week 4 I see a witch hut and think what the hell as long as it doesn't give leadership I'll find a use... then I got leadership, cursed loudly and quit. (sp game so no probs)

That would be a great solution and I would have done it myself if I hadn't disabled it! Plus imagine that happening in a multiplayer game. The grief, the unimaginable unfathomable grief!...
I keep wishing necro get their own special version of leadership, like the orcs get shatter X magic.(I know this has been mentioned before)

Finally Stronghold :D
At last I worked some strategy with Stronghold. It's for Kilghan, the Goblin King. I get warmachines for goblin support + defend us all when I have prerry good amount of Warriors, warmongers and Maulers + Kilghan's special. Then comes the Shout skill + Horde's anger with all these goblins and stronghold's high growth
Note: This isn't something very strong but it was fun for me to use it

You are not using secondary hero to scout Witch Hut to avoid such problems?

No, it would take too long. Anyway I stubbornly believe something must be done about leadership on necro heroes. I'm mainly an academy player and have gotten used to their ability to put any skill to good use.

I'm messing around with a CounterSpelling, Swiftminded, Dark Loving Alastor right now. My god is he the the perfect counter to Magic Factions.
And because this awesome wtfpwnj00 combo only requires 3 slots, he has a lot of flexibility for his last 2. Want to shoot for Enlightenment and Intel? Go right ahead. Have a hankering for Summon/Fire Warriors? Be my guest. Thinking Attack and Excruciating Strike is the way to go for creeping? You can do it! Want to add Defense and Luck because you like those two in tandem? You can do that as well.
Edit: And if you play games where you consistently get your hero to levels 27-32, you can even do Triple Ballista/Flaming Arrows with him. He is that awesome.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the finest counterspeller in Heroes 5.

With a swift minded Mass Confusion, Alastor will lock down the other hero, who at best will have one spell before Alastor's Counterspell goes up. Because I won't have to worry about Destructive Magic I can bring Pit Lords to a final battle. And if the enemy is also a Counterspeller, well my pits are going to be casting Vulnerability all day.
Of course enemy creature spellcaster resisting the confusion can be a potential thorn, but that can be dealt with in a few ways. One of which is to try and focus fire on them. Another is to have your Succubi Seducers take control of that spellcaster.
As for Empathy, sure that's a possibility. But I guess I have more of a preference for Mentor with him. Having Level 16+ Scouts with Expert Log is just yummy.
The key is the flexibility. Swift Mind for Inferno only requires 4 levelups. Take Scouting and Advanced Log first and sit on it until Swift Mind becomes available. DON'T take Pathfinding. Expert Dark/MoM requires 4 levelups. And Counterspell requires 4 levelups as well. It's theoretically possible, though unlikely, for this build to be finished by level 13. Focus on improving gating and getting gating perks to avoid bad perks and unnecessary skills until it's complete.

Nymus is blah. Grok and Deleb are considered the strongest Inferno heroes, with Marbas a possible if you know you're going against Dark. I think Alastor needs to be added to the mix. Confusion/Sorc/Consume Corpse is not a bad way to creep.

Instant gating rocks!!! And the bets thing is that you can create a kind of living wall to prevent most enemy units from attaking your original creatures while the mistresses burns them alive Also dark magic is the best for this kind of strategy, for as long as they remain confused, frenzied or puppeted in the other side of the battlefield, you've got nothing to worry about. The only problem is that you get this ultimate ability only a lot later in the game, if you're lucky.

I have also invented an unusual build...
For orcs of course. And it is anti dark caster build.
REMEMBER IT IS SPECIFIC BUILD SO IT SHOULDN'TY BE USED UNLESS YOU ARE SURE, YOUR ENEMY IS DARK CASTER!!!
I was wondering how to prevent my cyclops form attacking my own creatures- the answer is take them so far away from my troops that the frenzy won't help my enemy, but even make him pay... And here is the build:
Exp. Racial- All perks (if you play on a small map- you can resign from MOOB
Exp. Leadership- Recruitment; Battle Elation; Divine Guidance
Adv. Attack- Battle Frenzy; Stunning Blow
Exp. Shatter Dark- One perk you think is the most important (depends on your play style or none XP)
Adv. Logistics- Scouting; Swift Mind
On very big maps:
Basic Luck- Magic Resistance or Exp. War Machines- First Aid Tent, or Adv. Defense- Vitality; Defend Us All
Now, the choice of hero:
Kragh- just great, because you won't have that peachy Flaming Ballista and his mighty attack can be very handy while facing fierce hordes of undead/Dark Elves/Demons/ Dudes from Academy and so on
While playing him, you can also choose Excruciating Strike in spite of the luck or War Machines... And on the very big map you could reach Weakening Strike also (but that's not a necessity and is nice only while facing great armies and heros which are might-magic hybryds)
Urgath- She has one point wasted (Pathfinding), but dark users are usually quite fast (exp. logistics) so with her you can reach your foe befor he/she reaches his castle and/or Eldricht Well. Not very good creeping tough...
Garuna- nope. Her speical isn't usefull while facing casters... At all..
Gorshak- Can be, but also weak creeping...
Shak'Karukat- He is one of the most underestimated heroes...
But he is useless in this build XD
Haggash- Nice. Although she won't be so successfull with stunning blow as if she would be with flaming ballista...
But those centaurs are very tempting...
Extraordinary creeping.
Telsek- Can be, but not so good with this build... Unless you use Maulers (high initiative), but this ballista he starts with is wasted
Extraordinary Creeping (especially if there are lots of shooters on the map)
Kilghan- Another underestimated dude and another nice hero for this build. Creeping is quite poor but Goblins Witch Doctors are extreamly needed to block the spells... You can make nice creature combo with him takind Defend Us All (you have to have lots of Warriors tough)
Now how to play:
With swift mind you have quite a big chance that your hero will act before hostile hero.
Use Divine Guidance on Cyclops and take them as far away from your troops as you can...
If the Cyclops can reach even single stack of yours, and aren't closer to the enemy's stack- change your formation.
Haste your Cyclops with Shamans and Order Of The Chief/Chieftans and use divine guidance as long as they didn't reach your enemy's stacks...
When you, at last, manage to engage your Cyclops, play another creatures. Especially take care of your Slayers (and upgrades) cuz they can be easily mesmerized...
Don't forget to haste your Centaurs and use Powerfull Blow on them!
The rest you can reach by yourself analysing the build...
Good Luck XD

I'd say scrap that and go kick their butt with a flaming triple ballista It will keep dealing damage when your units cannot as long as it's not destroyed by the liches on first turn. But many ways to get around that.

Ok, but the looses are great, even if you manage to win (if you are unlucky cyclops will eliminate your ballista in their first move -_-)

Hence always taking tactics and swift mind if you can help it. Oh and of course chieftains to make them act before they get frenzied or something.
