Well, I usually turn the audio way, way down (listening to music or TV while paying ... check out pandora.com) and the graphics is not too important for me. The AI does have it's problems but the gameplay is pretty good and the expansion of the role of the heroes in welcome. I also like the detaile explanation of the scoring and the (mostly) end of the weekly rush to attack the castles due to uniformly growing resources and creatures.
Of course there are always things I would have liked added and / or changed but all-in-all it's a good game. Check out the evolution of the Civilization series CIV III - CIV IV - CIV Rev. for comparison.
IMHO, HOMM, CIV and Fallout are the best computer strategy games ever that are not purely military (E.G. Harpoon, Axis and Allies, etc). I also like RISK for casual playing.

Simply put, while I have seen the other Heroes games in various stores, I have never seen Heroes IV or any of its add-ons. If you can't even get the game in the local Wal-Mart, what does that say?

Yes it is.I wonder why so many people consider it bad...just because it's not like H3?

If h4 was another game everyone would say, that it is very good heroes remake. But it is in serie of heroes and thats why its not good for many people. You should treat it like a completely different game and than youll like it

I have played H3, H4 and H5.
H4 was for me the BEST of them. followed by 5 and then 3.
The reason I find that H4 wasn't as popular as 3 and 5 was that it wasn't like the others. people had 3 heroes games already, all of thm very similar IMO. and then NWC decided to make something different, something that wasn't quite as the other games where. And they succeded. BUT because it was so different people didn't like it. they knew heroes and didn't want that changed. If heroes 4 would have had another name then it would have been alot more popular. ofcourse there are things that could have been done better but no game is perfect. there is ALWAYS something that people doesn' like.

HoMM IV would be succesful IF people had given it a second chance. People needed to realize that just because it's different, doesn't mean it's awful. Aside from that, it's a great game.

Before I thought that h3 and h5 >>>>>>>> h4. But now I've changed my mind. I agree with you there, citycar. h4 is the best. I love the Pikeman for an example.

I voted for average but it's not precise opinion.
HoMM IV was great for the same reasons it was terrible. New options and graphics made game much more interesting, but also weird. If it wasn't HoMM then it would be a great game, but people expected a more conservative look.

and that's exactly why NWC created the game into what it is now. they wanted to create something different, something new. and it lead to their downfall. but still a great game.

HoMM 4 is alright, HoMM 3 is just so damn good. If there are no perfect games, plz explain HoMM 3. Except you can't choose between more than 2 skills at a time - and those are almost random + that some skills suck way too big (like Navigation), HoMM 3 is absolutely flawless. So of course HoMM 4 suffers in comparison. I like it though. But the lands are too open: in HoMM 3 the map was a labyrinth of tiny roads, in HoMM 4 there are big open spaces everywhere. Since your army, no matter the size, can't fill more than one tile, this is really daft and it doesn't look cool either. I like the labyrinthine HoMM 3 maps. In my life I've spent more time on HoMM 3 than I've spent on food!

I was like most people in the beginning. I really thought H4 sucked the first hour or so I played it. But when I played it a little more, I started liking it more and more. You seriously need to play it more than a few minutes to try it out for real.
Although I don't like the un-smooth choppy graphics. I am a gameplay>graphics person, but it's still a bit messy for me. Still a very good game.

HoMM 4 has great music, and the way skills and spells and alignments are ordered is much cooler than HoMM 3. Also the heroes on battlefield is great and the way you can flag things + let external dwellings increase for many weeks, instead of having to be emptied every week + caravans.
But it lacks a proper random map generator (keeps HoMM 3 forever young for me) and as I said before, I hate the big open areas that dominate all the maps. Also, the expansion packs suck, offering nothing new but a few creatures and not even bothering to connect their storylines with the general HoMM4+all-previous-games-one (thanks a lot for leaving Tawni in limbo)
Also, I miss SoD's fabulous, overpowering combination artifacts. I don't care. I want Armor of the Damned. I don't just want bonuses for my own troops, I want the enemy army bloody crippled from the getgo

It's an obvious fail. It's so down hills... If there never was Heroes3, then HoMM4 would've been an average game. Disciples 2 and Age of Wonders 2 would've been great. Now we have HoMM3 as the ultimate best, so HoMM4 falls as a really weak game. The main fail is how dull the game is compared to HoMM3. You have more action in a HoMM3 one week play than in a whole game of HoMM4. Really weak map on HoMM4, few options for the map makers with this kind of map layout. The idea of the heroes on the battle field is also veeery dumb. The battlefield it's self is bad. I could go on.
