i like H4 too. i first played with it in 2004 ( i borrow installer and hadn't finish even one campaign because our PC bug down.) and when my bother bought it last few months, it was ubisoft ( still, it was the same H4). i say they really change a lot compare to h3,(the upgrades, potions, spells, skills, etc.) but it doesn't mean it's not successful or close to failure. i'd say it was a good change. taking the reckoning on account, many have died or been extinct and that would be a good reason for not having an upgrade ( people are just starting to make a living after a dreadful reckoning-like the life and nature campaign) though it would be nice to have an upgrade ( to waste money!hehe ) some imbalance though is that heroes (or even a single hero) could finish a map easily after attaining certain level experience. that's really cool but wouldn't be challenging (you don't even have to think of tactics and strategies-just keep your creatures to defend your town and let your hero do the killing and conquering) any how, i still like h4 and sometimes i limit hero level just to make it more challenging...

HOMM IV is probably my favorite in the series. Mainly due to the fact that I am a bit more skilled in it that other HOMM titles I have played
But yeah, I gotta admit that like most people I thought it was kinda weird and a longshot from the other homm games at first, but since I like weird things(since I'm kinda weird myself) I decided to give it a fair shot.
Now I love it

Pros(in my opinion)

+ you don't have to wait seven turns for creatures to accumulate in towns(that was one of my biggest gripes with HOMM 3/5)

+ the new hero system. In my eyes it is a clear improvement over the other homm games in many areas. some of the cool features include:
    - Might heroes are now useful compared with other HOMM games
    - Heroes can use items like potions in battles and you can kit them out with gear
    - creatures can walk around freely without heroes and vice versa
- you can create different classes for your heroes by combining skills

+ caravans

+ prisons(in HOMM 3/5 you can just buy a defeated hero back into your army, but in 4: you want your defeated high level hero back? Then you have to raid the enemy towns)

+ you have to choose between dwellings in each creature tier

+ the game adds more emphasis on strategy and tactics than creature management(which to me the other HOMM games are mostly about)

+ soundtrack(simply amazing IMO the best HOMM OST and one of my favorite game soundtracks)

Cons(in my opinion)

- No creature upgrading(this was(and still is) a big letdown for me)

- Art style(I don't really approve of the art-direction in this game. gives me a very strange feeling sometimes)

- No siege weapons/ammo carts(they didn't add much IMO but I kinda miss these things in 4 actually)

- No capitol

- All heroes from each class start out with the exact same abilities and stats. Except for the flavor description and portrait they are IDENTICAL

I, for one, loved H4.
I've never played H3 so I can't say if it's the best in the series, but I feel that it is better than H5.
I loved:
similtanious retaliation
the magic system
multiple heroes in an army
the hero leveling system
the choice between two creatures
the campaign scenarios
the lack of order for campaigns (I love Sylvan-type factions. Imagine my annoyance when I discover I have to play through 4 other campaigns to reach H5 Sylvan campaign)
2 kinds of heroes per faction
daily creature recruitment
the map editor
premade scenarios

I didn't like:
Grandmaster necro vampire abuse
AI was easy to exploit in some situations (similtanious retal. and other combat features helped with this some)
campaign scenarios have to be played in order

I don't know what others thought of these features, but I feel that H4 works the best for my personal interests

When I first played H4, it had been about a decade since I'd played H3. I then went back to play some H3 and I think H3 is better.

While H4 fixed some of the problems, such as heroes chaining, and making the game less of "commanders/tacticians of might and magic," H4 simply brought in too many additional problems. H4 strives to be more sophisticated, but was unable to handle this sophistication. In comparison, H3 has a bit more elegance in all aspects except graphics.

Also, H3 had way better expansion packs, since NWC was bankrupt by the time H4 expansions came around.

New here so please people be forgiving.

Heroes IV, for me, is the most realistic of the series. Simultaneous retaliations makes sense (hey, real-life battles don't say "I shoot you first then you shoot me"), heroes can fight and die, armies can roam in adventure map with or without a hero in it (no more hero babysitting the army, makes a lot of sense to me), daily creature growth, the list goes on. The artifacts aren't balanced but that's why they're called artifacts, they're there to turn the tide of the game and even the artifact build still makes sense. The only thing I want in this game is an artifact merchant.

The only problem I think this game lacks is coherence. Game elements work well alone but not well with another element. For example, it's nice that you could hear a chicken cluck when you army stands near to it but with a nice adventure music also simultaneously playing in the background it ruins the atmosphere. Adventure objects aren't scaled properly (some trees look bigger than mountains!). Here, I think Heroes III did way better than Heroes IV and it made Heroes III the best in the series.

Heroes III is more fun while Heroes IV is more innovative. Heroes V is stuck in the middle of the two.

Things i liked in H4

-Fog of war
-Caravans
-rescue-able heroes
-Better Spell casting on creatures
-New magic system
-Battlefield
-unit's initiative/range
-Fighting heroes!
-units w/o heroes, good for scouting
-simultaneous retaliation (although i think that was a attack's penalty for retaliation)
-Heroes cooperation
-Saving battles

Things i disliked

-unlimited quantity of units running w/o heroes
-opera
-overpowered heroes
-less towns
-the creature's dwelling system (not able to build all the faction's dwellings in a castle)
-the lack of defense towers
-lack of heroe's specialization or personality for his/hers skills

BTW, i have not seen any good and complete description of the Equilibris mod, can somebody give me a link for it?

I did like H4, but, H3 was/is better IMO (well, at least WoG )

I think HOMM IV is a great game, and I refuse the negative things who people thinks about it.
But in my opinion the best title of the series is HOMM 2. I love it!

To my mind every heroes had their moment of glory and even if Heroes 5 is my favorite one, I think heroes 4 is still a very good game and I still enjoy playing from time to time with it because it changes a lot from the others Heroes of might and magic but still has the taste of the lineage ^^

I love both HoMM3 and HoMM4 (WoG and Equilibris 3.51). Just started playing 4 again. Sure the AI sucks but some good map makers are able to still make the game enjoyable at the hardest level. (I just found a .rar map pack online that contained over a hundred maps with lots of XL maps .) I really like all the variations of hero-building in 4 and think putting them in the battle was not a mistake at all. Strange how some things changed from 3 to 4. For example, the Hypnotize spell in 3 was worthless but in 4 it's so over-powered you can use it to make opposing armies wipe themselves out.
