Estates vs Scouting? HOMM3
It's week 2 day 4 on an extra large random with underground. I've exposed very little of the map due to some crampedness early on. However, due to a small homeland area, I broke out week 2 day 1 with an okay compliment of creatures, have expert logistics and have just acquired the boots of speed. My main (Ivor) had expert archery, offense, and logistics when he leveled up and was offered either estates or scouting. Neither of which would I choose for a main.
Which would you choose? The reason I ask is because I'm no stranger to HOMM3, but still have tons to learn in terms of strategy. I'm impatient, so I've been known not to see a map through. So I'm not sure which is better in the long run. I ended up choosing scouting for a few reasons. Not the least of which being that Ivor is very mobile at this point and might be able to reap that same amount of cash through more focused traveling due to better overview. Or is that more true of heroes AROUND the main?
I look forward to your replies. Thank you for your time.

Scouting for sure. Scouting is not a bad skill. Its a medium skill. Its likely that it will make you much faster. Estates is worth very little.

Always chance to get more money easily, so especially at an early stage always scouting.

Quote: First, wonder what you did wrong in another life to get offered only these. Then, get scouting
Believe me, I know better than to get stuck. Up to that point, the only thing I actually wanted that I passed up was wisdom. I had to choose between that and advanced offense right before Ivor was about to take on a Medusa Stores with just week one Grand Elves, Centaurs, and Goblins (hired Gretchin with two stacks). The Medusas were in stacks of eight, so I ended up needing the offense boost. Only magic I passed up was water. Didn't have a need for it.
Well thanks for everybody's fast replies. I guess it's unanimous. Glad I made the better choice. I like scouting on scouts, but don't like to use secondary skills that aren't always helpful. For example, when I'm traveling in areas I can already see, the skill does nothing.

Scouting-Add additional tiles of view and adds one rogues per day if u change this in WoG Options.
Estates-grants additional gold per day.
Hmm. It's good to pick up early scounting + u have recruited some rogues and Speculum or the other scope(not sure of the name), so u now got a good amount of rogues and good range view. Those rogues are great help, believe me. I like to get it with the WoG stronghold balista secialist = many rogues and good balista(s) because the stronghold commander adds some balistas Also with the increase range of sight u can plan some things better.
Estates I like too. Well, maybe not the best ability, but is godly in early game when u have lack of money. I pick it up with Lord Haart which makes it more and more powerfull. So the only thing u need is to take XP from the chests to level him up fast and u got a fair amount of money Lifesaver with Haart, and if not him Estates just looks mediocre/weak to me. Altough can help much in poor/small maps.
Anyway I usually pick up Scouting

Refusing the first offer of a magic skill often doesn't pay off. You could now end up in having none or only water magic in the end.
My advice: Always take the first magic offered, especially with a might hero who only can get 3 different magic skills. That way u can be 100% sure to have mass haste or mass slow in the end....
And yes, scouting is much more usefull for a main than estates.
And to the poster above:
This is about heroes 3 RoE, AB and SoD, not WoG. WoG has its own subforum here.

I assume he is playing single player, maybe at 200%. Under these conditions, money will be an isssue. Considering the fact, that he missed the first magic, and now get's an unwanted skill, he may end up without earth on his main.
I would consider to choose Estates and build up a new main. SP games on extra large w/ under take several months, and on these maps a second "main" is very useful. Ivor is level 8, it's not too late to switch.
Take Estates, get a new hero, and build properly. Expert earth is very helpful (A few weeks ago, I have explaned the plan how to make sure you get it). Make Ivor your secondary hero to defend your most important cities, while the main is far away.

if you want explore the map as quick as possible you should choose scouting. But if you want to be insured of a regular income of gold
you should choose estates, wich I would do cause i'm always out of money.
So, I advise to choose estates cause I think money is more important than exploring the map.

...for main hero will take scouting, it's definetly more usefull than estates. But having estates on castle sitters is usefull, more gold always means more troops especialy on poor maps

I would definitely choose estates from the two, though it is not an essential secondary skill.
