Misty recalls Dubba.  "You did your part." she looks at the others and decides to focus on the Twig's before their accuracy gets too much.  At least with the rain dance the water type here would be able to do some major damage to the Hippo.  Once the insects were down though, she'd have to do something about the electric types.

"Stripes..head but on that one!" (Twig 2) "Evan if that one is still up use pursuit on it, but if not use it on that one." (Twig one) Surely one would hit.

Misty texts "I am just getting in the way here, so far all my plans have backfired."

~Don’t worry about it,~ Mina texted back. ~We’ll pull through.~ Somehow.

Mina reflected that she really ought to try and have Sandshrew Rapid Spin those irritating rocks away, but she wasn’t sure if the little yellow Ground type would be willing to help. She resolved to wait a little longer; if nothing else, she might need Sandshrew to take over from Magnemite-intercepting duty if that Hippowdon targeted Pikachu.

“Pidgey, Twister those Magnemite! Hit Hippowdon too if it stays above ground; if not, go for one of those—” she checked her ‘dex to make sure she got the name right “—Twiggin!”

----------------

Pointed stones dig into Rattata!
Rattata loses 5 health!

Rattata uses Quick Attack!
Magnemite 1 is hit for 5 damage!
It’s not very effective…

“So little coordination, heh heh,” Tenma tsks as he works. “Watch and see what a real combined effort looks like, why don’t you?”

He waves in the direction of the Shadow Pokemon, and the still-conscious antelope-like creature springs into the sky in a fantastic display of gravity defiance. Not a moment later, the Hippowdon rises onto its hind legs and falls back to all fours with a rumble—a rumble both double-weak-to-Ground-type-attacks Magnemite ignore, thanks to their earlier use of Magnet Rise.

((Roll = 58))
Twiggin 1 still sleeps!

Twiggin 2 uses Bounce!
Twiggin 2 leaps up high!

Hippowdon uses Earthquake!

The Hippowdon’s attack is a little lop-sided; the purple-black Shadow Pokemon is suffering from sand in its eyes, leaving a small wedge of the area unshaken. Misty’s Pokemon, already a little wary after their own trainer nearly got them flattened by Surf, manage to dive into it just in time to avoid getting hurt. The rest of the group’s non-flyers aren’t so lucky.

((Roll = 81))
Attack missed!
Twiggin 2 avoided the attack!
((Roll = 15))
Pikachu is hit for 578 damage!
It’s super effective!
Pikachu faints!
Pidgey is unaffected!
Magnemite 1 is unaffected due to Magnet Rise!
Magnemite 2 is unaffected due to Magnet Rise!
((Roll = 67))
Attack missed!
((Roll = 1))
Rattata is hit for 191 damage!
((Roll = 62))
Attack missed!
((Roll = 42))
Snorlax is hit for 108 damage! ((Would have stayed conscious if not for the Stealth Rock and the weather effect. ))

Pidgey uses Twister! ((Roll = Null, 61, 45))
Hippowdon is hit for 5 damage!
Magnemite 1 is hit for 3 damage!
It’s not very effective…
Magnemite 2 is hit for 4 damage!
It’s not very effective…

Both Magnemite aim Sonic Booms in the direction of Stacey’s unconscious Snorlax, but as their aim has been even more fouled than the Hippowdon’s, the attacks do nothing more than splatter mud and gravel over the defenders. Evan, deprived of his target, redirects his attack at the nearer of the two Magnemite.

Stripes uses Headbutt! ((Roll = 15))
Twiggin 2 is hit for 24 damage!
Critical hit!
Twiggin 2 faints!

Evan uses Pursuit!
Magnemite 1 is hit for 6 damage!
It’s not very effective…
Magnemite 1 faints!

The Bandra forces watching have been forbidden from interfering for the time being, but they can still see the fight. A few of them start booing as the Shadow Pokemon go down, and over the clamor the group can hear one shout “Lucky break!” Meanwhile the non-Shadowed Pokemon endure the damaging effects of the storm ((Pidgey, Stripes: -3 HP, Evan – 4 HP)).

Tenma ignores all this and presses a few more buttons; finally he seems to have accomplished whatever-it-was he was trying to do, as he seems pleased. The Shadow Hippowdon looks more frenzied than ever and the sleeping Twiggin thrashes about; meanwhile the Pokedexes start blaring:

“WARNING! WARNING! Shadow Pokémon detected! Shadow Rage imminent.”

And the remaining Shadow Pokemon darken to pure, unrelieved black.

Dubba: 0/59
Pidgey: 37/61
Blaze: 0/65
Stripes: 38/53
Evan: 55/76
Hedge: 0/55
Slugma: 34/47 (recalled)
Pikachu: 0/46
Snorlax: 0/109
V: 2/44 (recalled)
Rattata: 0/46

Hippowdon: ???/??? – Entering Shadow Rage
Twiggin 1: ???/??? – Entering Shadow Rage
Magnemite 2: ???/??? – Entering Shadow Rage (Magnet Rise 2 rounds)

----------------

Christian:

((Roll = 69))

You turn west into Bandra territory. The road here is virtually empty—even the wild Pokemon are keeping low profiles. Presumably what little traffic comes through here knows about the Bandra conquest of Stardust, but this knowledge does not relieve the unsettling quiet all around you…

After an eight mile journey you notice a building off to the side of the road. On closer inspection, it’s a Pokemon Center. ((This is the one that’s been ‘five miles east’ for the main group if you’re curious.)) You notice a few wary faces watching you from the Center windows, but you can’t see any Bandra uniforms from here.

----------------

Jak:

You awaken on the shores of Helnith, still damp from your involuntary swim and somewhat sandy.

It takes you a few moments to get your bearings and remember how you got here. The relevant part started when the ship you’d stowed away on was attacked by a boatfull of surprisingly well-armed individuals dressed in R-emblazoned black outfits, and you were discovered during the scuffle. You managed to escape to one of the lifeboats with some of the crew, but one of the hijackers had a Pokemon with Hyper Beam and then you no longer had a lifeboat. After what seemed a short eternity struggling to keep your head above water, you managed to find a life preserver before passing out from exhaustion—and that’s the last thing you remember before waking up here.

You look around and take note of your surroundings. By the light, you estimate it to be about 4AM. The coastline you’re on runs roughly north to south and you’re within spitting distance of a small town. You also notice you’re missing the Net and Heavy Balls containing Mantyke and Truck, and your Nest Ball is empty—judging by the tracks in the sand, Sarge has once again indulged in his habit of walking off with other people’s property. His trail leads into town.

At first glance the area merely looks very quiet—unsurprising given the early hour. But a closer look reveals a darker picture: Several buildings have scorch marks and other signs of deliberate damage. Most have windows missing and a few—most notably the Mart—have been reduced to burned-out shells. The south wall of the Pokemon Center looks like it was hit by a boulder, but the roof is intact. The Gym is mostly undamaged, as are several houses and a building whose battered sign proclaims it to be the “Pokemon Geology Club Headquarters.” The streets seem deserted, but another flattened and weathered sign indicates this to be the town of Greshil.

((Blue buildings – houses.
Green – Gym.
White – Pokemon Center.
Brown – burned out wrecks (the bigger one is the Mart).
Golden yellow – Geology Club.
Aqua shape – pond.))

Rather than waste time texting, Mina nodded.

“Pidgey, Twister! Spread Mona’s Powder!”

She also had a decision to make regarding Natu. Was it worth possibly tipping off another Officer if Bandra already knew where they were?

May as well risk it, Mina decided at last. She took the tiny bird off her shoulder and told him in an undertone: “Natu, I need you to go get the biggest boulder you can find and Teleport it in front of the entrance. Can you do that for me?”

“Natu!”

“All right, go!

Brona:

The other Starlight Squad members are packing up the last of the supplies, and you can hear the heavy stone door opposite the entrance being pried open for the retreat. Those nearest you try to hurry a little more at your proclamation.

While you help with the preparations, you find an odd object brushed into a corner and forgotten: on closer inspection it’s mostly made of iron with specks of some sparkling rock mixed throughout, and edged with rust. It also looks to have been a pendant at one time as there’s a hole at the top for a cord. The strange symbol etched in it mesmerizes you when you look at it for long.

Iron Amulet – Held Item. Said to be a focus aid.

----------------

Main Group:

((Temporarily autoing Stacey per Alkar’s request.))

The sleeping Twiggin staggers to it feet, awakening; in the background the weird shadow storm seems to be intensifying. Mina scans the Shadow Pokemon again; all three have undergone a hefty stat increase, and the negative energy has cleared away their various afflictions. The fact that they’re now doomed to unconsciousness once their Rage wears off isn’t much comfort.

Twiggin: 123/123 (Rage Gauge 100%)
Hippowdon: 233/233 (Rage Gauge 100%)
Magnemite: 88/88 (Rage Gauge 100%, Magnet Rise 2 rounds)

Pointed stones dig into Natu!
Natu loses 13 health!

Stacey sends out Mona and Grimer!

Pointed stones dig into Mona!
Mona loses 6 health!

Pointed stones dig into Grimer!
Grimer loses 7 health!

Twiggin uses Shadow Accelerate!
Twiggin’s Speed rises sharply!
Hippowdon’s Speed rises!
Magnemite’s Speed rises!

((Roll = 43))
Hippowdon uses Shadow End! ((Roll = 3))

The huge Ground type sets its eyes on Tenma and charges toward the Bandra Officer, looking murderous. ((Pokemon in a Shadow Rage can’t be controlled, remember.))

“Hmm, that won’t do, heh heh,” Tenma coughs. “Smeargle, Protect.”

A wall of light forms between the gangly Bandra Officer and the raging hippo Pokemon; the latter slams into it with a thunderous crash and falls back, bellowing with rage.

Hippowdon loses 116 HP!

((Roll = 28))
Magnemite uses Shadow Rush!
Magnemite was blocked by Protect!

Natu uses Teleport! ((Roll = 63))
Natu vanishes from the field!

Stripes uses Headbutt!
Magnemite is hit for 4 damage!
It’s not very effective…

Evan uses Pursuit!
Twiggin is hit for 10 damage!

Mona uses Sleep Powder!

Pidgey grabs his chance and starts beating up a furious Twister.  The wind snatches up the Sleep Powder and blows it towards the Shadow Pokemon—fortunately the confines of the battlefield work in the group’s favor and keep the powder from dispersing too much.

((Roll = 97, 37, 69 – Miss, juuuust barely hit, miss!))

The raging Hippowdon abruptly begins to slow and finally slumps to the ground in sleep. The other two Shadow Pokemon seem unaffected, though the Taskmaster that’s been trailing Tenma yawns widely and slumps over.

Grimer uses Minimize!
Grimer’s Evasion rises!

The darkening light strikes Pidgey!
Pidgey takes 7 damage!

The darkening light strikes Stripes!
Stripes takes 6 damage!

The darkening light strikes Evan!
Evan takes 9 damage!

The darkening light strikes Mona!
Mona takes 6 damage!

The darkening light strikes Grimer!
Grimer takes 7 damage!

Twiggin’s Rage Gauge fell 2%!
Hippowdon’s Rage Gauge fell 2%!
Magnemite’s Rage Gauge fell 2%!

The group hears swift footsteps on the ground behind them; one of the Starlight Squad is hurrying back into the chamber.

“You’re still here?” He sounds surprised, then remembers what he came for. “The Elder sent me to tell you the eastern door is open; we only need a few more minutes ((1 more round)) before we’re ready to go.”

Jak looked around and surveyed the town before him.  Something was off about it.  He couldn't quite put his finger on it but although this town had the staples of every other city and town he'd visited, it was still different.  The architecture of the buildings was something he hadn't seen before.  Even some of the trees looked new to him.

While scanning the area, Jak immediately remembered what brought him this far into a residential area to begin with.  Sarge!  That stubborn hardheaded Seedot had wandered off again.  Amidst all the damage from what appeared to have been a nasty fire, Sarge's tracks had faded.

Angrily without thought, Jak removed a Quick Ball from his pocket.

"Starly!  Get up in the air and find Sarge!"

In a bright flash of light, a Starly emerged from the Poké Ball.  It hopped around on the ground and attempted to take flight...but instead jumped up with his right wing extended and came crashing back down to the ground.

Jak looked and then proceeded to place his face in the palm of his hand and shake his head.  In his flash of anger at Sarge's disappearance, Jak had forgot about Starly's injured wing that he himself had wrapped up days earlier.

Starly continued his attempts even though it was causing him pain.  Starly hated disappointing his master.

"Starly!  Stop that.  You're going to hurt yourself even more and you know I can't take you to a Pokémon Center.  STARLY!  I SAID CUT IT OUT!"

Starly tripped over his own little feet and the sound of his master yelling.  He dropped his head in sadness.  Never had he felt so useless.

"Starly, I'm sorry.  I can be so stupid sometimes.  I forgot about your wing buddy.  Come on.  You can walk with me.  We have to find Sarge."

~We run for it and hope they’re slowed down enough for everyone to get away. Maybe bar the next set of doors behind us too, and slow them down some more.~

----------------

Jak:

You try to pick up the trail of your wayward Seedot, Starly in tow.

Up close, you note the buildings are every bit as abandoned as they looked from afar…it seems that here, at least, you aren’t going to run into anyone who could recognize you.

On top of that the place seems to have been looted—most of the doors are unlocked or outright broken down, and a few glimpses inside show empty places and discolored spaces where expensive equipment used to sit, especially in the Pokemon Center. There’s nothing systematic about it however, so there might be something useful left hidden in the debris…

----------------

Main Group:

Stripes braces himself!

Evan uses Endure!

Twiggin uses Vanish!
Twiggin disappears from sight!

((Sleep Roll = 39))
Hippowdon still sleeps!

((Roll = 76))
Magnemite uses Shadow Bolt! ((Roll = 49))
Evan is hit for 56 damage!
Evan endured the hit!
Evan remains conscious with 1 HP!

Natu returns to the field! ((Roll = 62))
Pointed stones dig into Natu!
Natu loses 13 health!

The pint-sized Psychic type has returned with a piece of rock shelf nearly sufficient to block the door. However being so small ((and with no Psychic-type moves that can help yet )) he is also absolutely helpless to keep it in the air: the minute he appears gravity reasserts itself and the chunk of stone begins a slowly-accelerating fall.

“Everybody call them back!” Mina shouts, pairing words with action and recalling Pidgey.

There is just enough time for the group to recall their Pokemon. Then the boulder crashes into the earth with a ground-shaking thud, leaving only a little bit of space at the top for the four-inch Psychic type to squeeze through himself. Mina puts him back on her shoulder and the Starlight Squadie hastily ushers the group to where the rest of his comrades have fallen back.

((The Pokemon of all participating trainers each gain 1 level. Yes, even Phoebe. Stats up in the OoC thread.))

“Hurry up!” Dien calls. The group runs through the door, chased by loud thudding echoes throughout the chamber as the Shadow Pokemon alternatingly beat at the stone barricade.

((Map:

The red portion is the area the Starlight Squad was using as their encampment until Tenma showed up. We’re now in room 2.))

((Encounter Roll = 13))

It’s immediately obvious why the Starlight Squad didn’t press on this way before now: this room is larger than the entire set of chambers they had previously laid claim to, with no fewer than six doors to defend (not counting the one now being slid shut behind the group) and it is home to a set of angry Wispaferyn. The latter are currently being held off by several of the Squad, including Sesh and Elren.

The far end of the chamber is on a raised dais crowned by a very old alter, and the walls are covered with murals depicting Salerdia and the creation of Helnith—dusty, keep-off-the-display style fencing surrounds some of the more intact sections.

At last the door to the entrance slides into place with a thunderous echo. There are six panels in the back: one each in red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and orange, and Dien brings his fist down on purple panel. It begins to glow and the door emits a series of secure-sounding clunk noises. Mina raises an eyebrow at this, but one of the lower-ranking Starlight Squad explains:

“This place was one of the strongholds against Aidrelas during the last war; some of the protections are still in place.”

Misty is briefly distracted then as Stripes’ Pokeball begins to wiggle. Misty releases her Normal type only for him to begin to glow brightly—Stripes is evolving!

The glow fades and the newly-evolved Linoone trots over to Misty and tries to get her attention. It seems the Normal type picked something up during the last battle:

Spring – Held item. Allows user to hit Pokemon during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, Bounce, etc. Makes Pokemon that run more limber.

Stacey then does as commanded and makes a run for it. She looks around with the others as they go along, and listens as Starlight Squad member explains the purple panel pressing.

"That's nice. Though, since this wasn't used until now, the protections won't hold them off for long, right? A last resort type of deal? Or is it because it only protects a small portion of what we want protected?"

Natu fluffed his feathers and trilled irritably to himself; Mina assumed he was complaining about the Stealth Rock, as he was studiously preening the signs of it away. She reached up to give him a scratch; he took a moment to cuddle before going back to his feathers.

“Yeah, I know. Sorry my dear. Remind me to plant some Oran Berries once we get back to Ternai,” she told him, as much for her own benefit as his since she couldn’t understand him anyway. He trilled distractedly in the affirmative.

Mina then scanned her other Pokemon quickly and frowned; Pikachu had been very badly hurt by that Earthquake, and she doubted anything short of a Pokemon Center was going to fix the damage. She didn’t say anything about it just yet however; odds were there were Pokemon among the Starlight Squad in much worse shape, and there was nothing to be done about it now except press forward.

So she went over the rest of her Pokemon in her head, wondering which ones would be best to drive off the wild Wispaferyn and get out of this place, and reviewing what she had left as far as healing items. Pikachu might be beyond her help at the moment but Pidgey and Natu weren’t; on the other hand, they’d already contributed to the retreat, so perhaps it would be better to rest them both for the time being and conserve her stock of Potions for emergencies.

----------------

Stacey:

Dien nods sourly, and the Squadie who piped up earlier explains over the sound of battle in the background:

“Think of it as a really fancy, unpickable lock: they can’t open it now, but that doesn’t mean they might not just break it down. Even if they can’t, there’s still the front entrance, so we’ll have to get out before they can bottle us in again.”

----------------

Misty:

You swap the item over to Evan as the Dark type heals himself.

----------------

Christian:

You knock on the door. You hear hurried conversation from inside before someone cracks a window open and calls out.

“Who are you and why are you here?”

Another voice, this one female, addresses the speaker from inside. “He’s not wearing a Bandra uniform, Jon, just let him in.”

“He could be a Bandra!” ‘Jon’ argues back.

“Maybe, maybe not,” a third voice interjects. “You want t’leave the poor sap out in the open if’es not?”

There is a moment or two more of arguing from within in before the door finally opens.

----------------

Jak:

You circle the remains of town looking for tracks or other signs when your Starly tries to get your attention, chirping and motioning to the road leading east with his good wing—just as you yourself notice something huge and white near the pond.
