Poll Question:
Save The Penny!

With all the topics that our goverment here in Canada could be dealing with they decided to go after the Penny.
That's right there is apparently an effort being made to to kill our 1 cent coin.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080402/national/kill_the_penny

My question for all of you is "Do you think we should get rid of the penny?"

Personally I kind of would just so that the damn stores stop putting their prices at something like $9.99.  Oh or if you shop at Wal-Mart $9.97...lol  Come on we all know were spending $10 bucks.

  So what do you think?

In Europese countries, some countries already got rid of their € 0,01 coins (1 Eurocents), like Finland. Why shouldn't they do something similar in Canada/USA ?

In the US it costs significantly more than 1 cent to manufacture 1 penny, due to the ever-escalating price of copper.

Most places, if they make something that ends up loosing them money, either changes the product or discontinues it.  Not only do I think that they should get rid of the penny, but the nickel as well.  Round up to the nearest dime.  At least those annoying 19.99 infomercials would have to change .

They wouldn't have to change...

They can still market it as $19.99 but you just have to pay the full $20.

I think they should just outlaw decimal points and be done with it. We don't need all those little numbers anyway and they just make math more difficult.

You're right. It's pretty much what happens in Australia, especially as one and two cent coins are no longer used, but I reckon the five cent coin should go as well as they are pretty much useless.

I read somewhere that 80 million US dollars in pennies costs 134 US dollars..........

Actually it is 98.4 million to make 80 million dollars worth of pennies.  Pennies cost 1.23 cents to make.  Nickels take 5.73cents to make.

Yea, but they get used a whole bunch of times. So teh cost per use is very low.

Bills on the other hand don't last very long. So the cost per dollor might be low, the cost per use is high.

Hey, I just thought of something. I have a whole bunch on pennies in my drawer. I wonder if the government wants to buy them for 1.2 cents each. They would be coming out ahead on the deal and saving tax payers money.

That is very true .  America tried a dollar coin, but it went over like a lead balloon.  Don't ask me why, doesn't make much sense.  Guess people figured they have enough change.  A coin system for higher ammounts makes sense, though machines would have to be refitted.  Maybe it is the weight?  *shrugs*.  Lowest cost per use would be the quarter right now (would say 50 cent peice but they are not used a lot for some reason).

Wow, I wonder if I can go to jail for putting pennies on railroad tracks and flattening them when I was a kid. I was probably a felon by the time I was ten years old.

As far as the dollar coin, it never caught on because it was too close to the size of a quarter and people kept getting mixed up.

Who the heck likes to carry around pockets full of metal?  Bills are much easier, and that's why the dollar coin has never caught on.

Well In regards to the $1 dollar coin we have that in use a lot here in Canada.  It's called the Loonie. Featuers a picture of the Loon on one side.
This coin annoyed me in the beggining but it is very useful because of things like candy/pop machines and washer/dryers.

I just really hated when they followed that one up with the Toonie.  That's right a $2 coin.  If they really wanted this coin they should have left the bills as well that way we would have a choice.  Our lowest Bill here in Canada is a $5 bill.

With easy access to things like debit cards (and who knows what else in the future) it maybe a moot point before long.  It won't be anytime soon, but eventually almost all transactions will be electronic.  Of course maybe hundreds of years, or not.  However, until that time, it only makes sense that the mint should only make things that make it a profit (ie cost less then it's face value).

I personally like the Twoonie. Good for leaving tips, buying small candies, grabbing a soda-pop from a vending machine (since they're 1.50 -  2.00$ nowadays) etc. And the polar bears on them are so cute.

The penny is also important, even if only in a traditional sense. If they stop producing pennies, how will I make money off thoughts? Also, I'd have to pay more for knife gifts. Besides, I like to charge pennies for dog sleddering rides.

Well since the pennies currently made will last years (and years, and years) that wouldn't be a problem anytime soon.  Even if they stopped making them right now.  Places would still be expected to accept them, for years to come, also.  I know people who have hundreds of dollars worth of pennies saved up.  You could still charge and use pennies for quite some time.

In euro's the lowest note is a fiver as well, and we, too, have a 2-euro coin, which is even more then a 2-dollar coin, I should point out. And I like having it. It's dead useful at times and besides it would be really weird to have a note for one or two euros. But I guess that's just a question of what you're used to...

As for the penny, in Finland they don't use 1 or 2 cent coins. And just as TA said, they label the prices as something like 9.99 and then charge you 10.00. The awkward thing is, I live in Luxembourg and I have my pockets full of one cent coins. (Buy something for 1.99, pay for it with a two euro coin... you get the idea.) Now, whenever I go back to Finland, it creates a problem. Say I wanted to buy a bag of sweets for 1.99, and I just happened to have that exact amount in my wallet. I go and place it on the sliding thing and I get asked to pay two euros for it. What am I to do? Point out that actually, the label says 1.99 and not 2.00? Pay the one extra cent that won't destroy me economically, but let them get away with practically cheating their customers just because most of them don't own one or two cent coins? My opinion is that if they mark the price as 1.99, they'll have to accept the payment of 1.99, should someone be able to provide it. If they want two euros for it, they should ask two euros for it. What do you think?
