Hero Mount: A skill?
Hero Mounts is a discussion that keeps cropping up, and I would like to forward an Idea about it.
What if the Hero's mount was a skill that could be upgraded to gain a better mount? The Skill Set, (Basic Riding, Advanced Riding, Expert Riding) would go from a standard Horse to a Specialized Creature (War Horse, Unicorn, Nightmare, Elephant, etc) to a Flying Creature. (Griffin, Pegasus, ?Drake?, ?Roc?, etc)
I'm not sure what the perks would be, I suppose relating to LOS, distance traveled, and perhaps a hero attack in combat?
About Flying creatures: I'm thinking you can chose to go on land or to fly. However, flying means a big speed loss, and you have to land on normal ground.
Thoughts? Questions? Comments?

Lo es muy interesante. Cool, i like this idea. However, I would not like it if it took up space as a necessary skill in your hero's abilities. That would dampen the coolness of it if it filled the place of something more vital. However, if it was completely racial, hey, let it go with the flow. It'd be a nice little addition to make the game more realistic.

While I think the idea of making a skill that opens up for "special" or individualized Hero properties - like his attacks in battle - is interesting, I don't think this is the way of implementing it. First of all, there is already one skill influencing Hero movement: Logistics.
A skill that allows flying on the map - even for only short distances at high movement cost - is simply a bad idea, as it breaks down everything that is map structure. The idea of implementing Instant Travel as "free" level 3 spell is a disastrous example of this: Suddenly, everything that is obstacles, boarder guards, wandering guards, etc. looses importance, because you can simply jump over it.
That being said, one might contemplate on the possibilities of having a perk in Logistics that did something to the mount, for instance providing increased damage in direct attack (i.e. providing Sylvan heroes with a Unicorn mount, that did special piercing damage with its horn). Such thoughts imo. ties up closely with how we want the Hero to be on the battlefield in Heroes 6.

I agree, and the thought of the hero being able to transport his entire army on his mount also sounds kinda weird...
But I like the mount idea! Maybe artifacts for mounts could be a good idea?

This is a good idea.
I agree that there should be some sort of perk that increases mount performance either on or off the battlefield, but it should not be its own seperate skill. I agree with Alc that it should be one of the perks within logistics. Maybe having a specific mount perk for each race.

I think that each town should have a stable where you can buy a mount that has different strenghts and weaknesses, as well as unique abilities. To quote my H6 proposal:
Knight: Quarter Horse: Low hit points, fast in combat, always travels over 10 squares in the Adventure Map (unaffected by anything), but cannot go more than 15 squares per turn. Charging Horse: High hit points, expensive, powerful, and slow.
Warlock: Centaur Steed: Medium hit points, fast in combat, gives hero two attacks. Enslaved Dragon: Very expensive, high hit points, high attack and defense, can fly in combat, gives hero Breath Attack.
Inferno: Carrier Demon: Cheap and weak in every way. Nightmare Steed: Pretty expensive, medium hit points, fast speed in combat, average in Adventure Map, gives hero No Retaliation.
Forest: Vine Steed: Fast, No Retaliation. Riding Phoenix: Very expensive, very fast, flies in combat, breath attack, lower hit points than Enslaved Dragon.
Necropolis: Bone Horse: Slow, Skeletal. Giant Bat: Weak, Flying, and Vampire Drain.
Conflux: Elemental Horse: Weak, gives 50% resistance to all elemental damage spells. Ki'rin: Expensive, fast, gives hero Teleport and 50% magic resistance.
Aqua: Tuna: Very cheap, gives hero ability to travel over water if he/she doesn't have creatures that can't swim. Whale: Expensive, high hit points, carries all creatures in army as well.
Stronghold: Mule: Cheap, medium in every way, reduces terrain penalties by 50%. Boar: High hit points, increases hero's damage by 50%.
Swamp: Lizard: Cheap, weak, No Retaliation. Riding Serpentman: Slow, high hit points.
Tower: Wise Horse: Slow, weak, gives hero 50% reduction in all spell costs. Riding Naga: Average for level, No Retaliation.
Forge: Four-Legged Walker: weak, fast. Armored Dragon Golem: powerful.
Dark Elves: Troglodyte: weak, Immune to Blind. Spider: Fast, Binding, Poison Attack.

I dislike the idea of flying hero. Map structure loses its meaning then (like Alcibiades has already said) what kills the strategy.
The idea of mount itself is ok. This should be only interesting add-on but not too much influental feature.

The hero would only be able to fly, though, if he had a flying mount and an army made out of flying creatures.

Doesn't matter. Not too difficult to accomplish an army of flying creatures and then zap through map. Any faction with a level 7 Dragon faction could exploit this grossly.

Yes, but it makes more sense that way. I mean, if you have an army made out of flying creatures, and a flying mount, why not be able to fly?
I see what you're saying, though. I think that the hero with a flying mount should only be able to fly in combat. (Heroes should be in combat.)

Yes, I'm with you on the latter, that would be a nice feature. I'm doing thoughts on this myself at the moment.

Flying on the Adventure Map not Strategy? Yeah! Right!
Did anyone play Warlords 1 to Warlords 3? Made by Steve Fawkner?
If you did, you know what I mean by flight and creature advantage onto the whole Adventure Map. Costs your eyeballs to build, so, very hard to gather up. But, once it is amassed, now, the fun really starts. Plus, you will need a very experienced hero to do just that, fly.
Besides, making a fast paced game is the main goal of every strategy gaming dev. And, players really like to play, replay and, replay again as often as they can in a single day(weekend day, preferably). A game that lasts for several hours at a time is only interesting if, you are a kid or, a retired person with a lot of spare time on its hands pernanently for years to come. For a working person that does a lot of hours at work every week, it is not pleasant knowing that your favorite game will take a whole afternoon or night to play during the weekend(if, you can get freed up that is). As of two months ago, I was stuck choosing Tiny size on the RMG with only two factions(1vs1) for a very quick game that took at least 1 to 2 hours anyway. A very large map takes me at least half a day to finish up.
