The thing with everyone getting a village and growing from there or some such is that you end up with people wondering if they're going too fast or thinking "hey, that guy is overdoing it!" and stuff.

Then again, I'm just voicing my opinion. Don't take me too seriously since I'll probably end up not playing.

Well maybe some limitations could be included. For example, a building costs so much days to make, and gathering the resources so much, etc. I don't know.

You do remember that this is RP and not a web-game which calculates time, money, resources etc.?

Besides, interactions are much more interesting than plain self-building.

ok, I have a rough idea how the RP and the character creation is going to work, to make it all balanced for everyone.

a points system...

now before you begin to roll your eyes and moan about stiffling your creativity, What I DO NOT want this to turn into a "My god's better than your God!" situation. you have two general areas to spend on points, focusing on one or the other more or less.

God Duty is the first one. the highest you can get is Total god, which pretty much costs all your points, but allows you to do anything... as long as you are in your particular radius. the lowest you can get is often quiet and embarrasing or comic duty, like of flatuance, or of squashed animals, or of vomiting through food posioning.

Godly radius is the other factor. the highest you can get is international, so you can wander throughout regions, with people worshiping you, but always as a background figure. the lowest you can get is the guardian god of a single person, who when they die, your gone.

you can gain more points to spend by purchasing Flaws, that will give your god character and more points to spend on power. Flaws include minor things such as promiscuity and gluttons, to stuff like Control freak and Spawner of Monsters (the latter would role play quite interestingly).

A point system works fine as a rough guide to see who's better at what when you're dealing with mortals in a more typical setting, but when you scale up to gods, things kinda screw up. For example, how would you point my Divine Senate idea?

The "my god is better than your god" problem is best resolved by common courtesy and people deciding in conversation what would provide the more interesting result whenever a conflict arises in the story. This is how these things were usually solved around here.

EDIT: Of course, you could also incorporate a GM to manage everything. No, in case you ask, I do not wish to be the GM.

In your case it's actually easy. From your description I understand that he (them) is an allpowerful god that's almost pinned to one place.

Yeah. Sorry. Too much monopoly for me.

Some kickarse ideas I see there, Bigz. So basically it's like simplified FRP character sheets? I like that.

Right, can I volunteer to help with the details of the mechanics? Here are some of my ideas, following your basic system:

God duty:

Level One - Daemon/Spirit - grants basic immortal abilities and spells, but you have strong ties to the material world, can be summoned or called upon by mighty mortal spellcasters, priests and cultists, and resemble more a powerful, semi-ethereal creature or spirit than a god by itself. People more acknowledge your existence than actually worship and devote their lives only to you, though they do respect and fear you. Example: Christian demons, protector saints, forest spirits and similar.

Level Two - Entity - as a lesser god, you have a small but loyal cult of followers and have abilities to be reckoned with, if used properly. You can hardly be matched in your area of expertise, and that gives you quite a bit of influence not just among the mortals (who can offer you sacrifices and similar), but among the immortals too. Example: Hermes, Hephaestus etcetera.

Level Three - Deity - a regularly powerful god, you are a full member of the Parthenon and have a good chunk of followers. You may have two or three areas of expertise, or master just one to the point of perfection. You have the power and potential to pick your chosen ones, lead heroes or even tribes and cities to glory, battle with other gods and even create lesser mythological creatures to help you and do your bidding (such as Satyrs, Pixies, Gnomes etcetera). You may have a sacred animal (or plant or similar), and you may command and look through the eyes of all such beings in the world if you please. You generally avoid direct contact with the material and prefer to do it through your subjects. You generally have an indirect approach to the world, but if need arises, you will not hesitate to walk down to earth and explain some rebellious titans or such who's the boss. Example: Athena, Anubis and others.

Level Four - Divine Power - as a strong, much exalted deity, you have jurisdiction over several elements, and are respected by gods and mortals alike. You have power to lead entire peoples (or races, for example you can be the chief protector god of orcs or dwarves) to greatness and create powerful, almost undefeatable mythological creatures such as the Hydra or the Cerberus. You may grant individuals huge power, and carve their names into history, you can even have a daemon or spirit working for you, your cults are widespread and your might is vast. Example: Hades, Thor and such.

Level Five - Cosmic Force - a primordial entity, possibly one of the creators of the physical world, you are ancient and immensely powerful. You can command huge factors such as Fate, Life, Death, Time etcetera and you are feared by all other, lesser gods in existence. There's a good chance that you are too great for mortals to even know about you - some are completely above the mortal world, transcendent and withdrawn, known only as mysterious, all-powerful spirits in distant, forgotten legends of ages past. Then again, some have hundreds and hundreds of thousands of worshipers and widespread religions following them. Day-to-day affairs of the worlds are for smaller deities, the Cosmic Forces usually either watch and occasionally direct other gods from far above, dwell in their own, full-grown worlds, or sleep their eon-long dreams until need arises for them to awake once again. Your mind does not always fit into mortal terms such as logic and reason; your Purpose is usually grander than that, and at far greater levels - even other gods may have trouble understanding you. Perhaps you were once one of them, and have risen to this level later, or you have always been like this. You may have many daemons serving you, or you may be so transcendent that you have no need for anything but your own, pure Thought. Example: Supreme deities of most religions

What do you think? There's also the radius and some other aspects, we'll write them down later.

That sounds great.

I like the idea of a guardian spirit type thing whose strength grows with it's radius over time, like as mentioned before starting out just as a small shrine and then a village devoted to the shrine, a city etc.

And maybe introduce a factor of belief for some gods. The more that believe in a certain god, the stronger it becomes.

Of course not for all gods Some don't care whether you believe or not

And with the divine senate thing; this could provide an opportunity for interaction. Maybe a godly tribunal every so often where problems can be brought up and the gods have to meet to discuss things.
Not compulsory to attend, but anyone who's anyone is there, so maybe the minor deities don't care too much or the evil deities are too evil to go or something

As big as christian, muslim and jewish god?

How about smaller ones? God of one single tree?
We had those in finnish mythology.

I really like the growing influence idea. Treeholy treeshrineetc.

This would be a cosmic force - the creator of the universe etc. etc.

I think I want to be a spirit. Not powerful, but free to roam the world. How about this:

The spirit of happiness and laughter (will think of a name later). Walks the world in human form spreading happiness wherever he goes. He is not worshipped per se, but people acknowledge his existence and pray to him before big parties and celebrations in hopes of summoning him to it. Usually if the celebration goes extremely well it is a sign that he was there. Abilities: Aura of happiness, can cause a human to laugh - anything from a giggle to a hysterical and uncotrolable laughter, can teleport to the nearby party.

I was thinking of the Divine Senate (my character) as a kind of force created by the most ancient of gods to cease their petty disputes and world-shattering conflicts. Thus, although not being one of the ancients (some of which probably no longer exist or something), the Divine Senate is at the Cosmic Force level, but doesn't have direct power over the mortal world. Instead, it affects it through other gods and spirits, perhaps as a form of punishment for disrupting the Grand Order Of Things TM or some such.

An important detail is that other deities lose most of their power within the Palace of Naught. You're still immortal, but can't summon creatures or teleport out or bend time or blast everyone. True neutral ground to settle any disputes with the assistance of a collective arbiter.

Also, if this ends up being somewhat over my point limit in terms of overall power, I'm willing to toss in some "flaws" as Bixie defined them. Does excess bureaucracy count?

I really like the idea of roleplaying an entire divine institution. My very first truly polymorphic character, one might say.

I want to make it totally clear, we are dealing with gods, not creators. Gods are beings of worship, not creation.

I think I'll be an entity, by the name of Benvolrr.  God of Woodsmen and animals that inhabit Mountainous Forests.  I can summon Deer and Wolves, and if given time can grow trees (this takes hours, even days)  Preist(esse)s in my cult learn Hernespeak, the language of animals, over time.  All species have different dialects, but if you learn one you can learn the other fairly easily.  If you learn Wolf then learning Dog is easy, but learning Deer takes more time.  My symbol is the crossed Axe and Antler, and the Elm tree is sacred to me.
