I admit, I liked Reagan. Though I am convinced at the end it was his wife running things. Another that might make the nomination list is JFK. Can't forget ol Theodore Roosevelt either.

Quote: Why is it always about American politics but hardly ever about other countries?
Want a thread about Australian politics? Then make one.
Quote: Mvass, you try to list his accomplishments, but you missed the most important one, his leadership ability.
Well, Hitler had leadership ability too, but look at what he did with it. It doesn't matter if a President has leadership ability, but what he does with it.
Quote: Ford and Carter were "buffer" presidents who didn't do much
To suggest that Ford was a buffer President would be underestimating his role.
Quote: He signed NAFTA???
I agree that Clinton didn't negotiate NAFTA, but it could've been worse. He could've taken the party-line orthodox Democratic action and vetoed NAFTA, but he didn't.
Quote: Welfare reform was BIGTIME Reagan era economics.
And? Clinton could've vetoed welfare reform, but he didn't. Clinton's major accomplishment wasn't bringing anything new to the table, but combining stuff that was already there in good ways.
Quote: Nixon
Nixon was definitely a mixed bag. On the plus side, he had an extremely good foreign policy. And he got us off the Breton Woods system. On the minus side, he signed the first affirmative action policy, he used price and wage controls, and, of course, Watergate.
Quote: Perhaps he is a bad president, perhaps not.
He is pretty bad, although he could be worse. But I challenge Bush-haters to name one good thing he did. I'm sure it's possible. I'll start off: CAFTA.
Quote: To me one person has always came to mind when they mention great american presidents. George Washington.
Washigton wasn't a bad President, and he set a pretty good example for future ones, but he never really accomplished anything extremely significant by himself.
Quote: FDR certainly comes to mind.
When FDR comes to mind, Japanese internment camps should come to mind as well.

@mvass
I disagree with your reasons for Lincoln being overrated. Who is to say what our nation - nay, the world - would be like today if we hadn't kept the South? True, much of the South is poor and underdeveloped... but most of Florida isn't. *And* if the nation had been permanently divided, who is to say how California, Texas, Washington, etc. - all very rich states - would have ended up. AND the power-balance in Europe throughout the latter half of the 19th C might have ended up very difference.
As for best president, I don't know. Though it might seem something of a cliche, I'm inclinded to include at least one or two of the founding fathers on that list.

Well, I'm not American, but I surprised no one mentionned Washington yet. I doubt that he would have been that bad.

Well, I'd say we'd be a lot better off without the South. Without the South, Bush would've never been elected!
Lexxan and Corribbus:
Well, let's look at the Founding Father Presidents:
Washington - good but not great, set a decent example, but didn't do anything exceptionally great as Presdient.
Adams - very bad, Alien and Sedition Acts.
Jefferson - not bad, except his Embargo, which was a bad idea.
Madison - average, didn't do anything good or anything bad.

I think maybe you don't give them enough credit just for holding the new nation together.

"Underrated presidents", lol
Really, the USA had catastrophic presidents lately. They made so many people hate USA and Americans, and the best examples of that are Clinton and both Bushes. Here I am not talking just about my people, but I know the impression of other nations on this matter. I am hoping that Barrack Obama will put a stop to that and finally show to the world what is democracy. But when we are talking about the USA's best president, my choice would definitely be Kennedy, although the most popular president, Lincoln, isn't bad. We have an example of the Kennedy situation even on the Balkans, it is Mr Zoran Djindjic. He is probably turning in his grave because of the political situation in Serbia currently.

I agree that the current Bush is terrible, but Clinton and Bush Sr. were both above-average Presidents.
