tracks on the ground
Now then the have fog of war
would`nt it be cool if all heroes left tracks that slowly dissapeard
It could work something like this
for each grade you have in scouting you would see that old tracks so if you have basic scouting you see one day old tracks and if you have grandmaster you would see five-day
old tracks
what do you think?

Nice idea, but you should also see wandering creatures' tracks [I hope you mean footprints], cause where a titan walked only blind can't see the footprints. And to make it even more complicated and stupid there should be the weight stat - it'll change the level needed to find the footprints!

This would actually be pretty cool
I like it! A hero shouldn't be able to just disappear into the fog of war with a massive army, leave no tracks at all (unless it's a Stealth hero that you normally wouldn't see, although his army still would leave tracks), and slip away while you try to figure out which way he went. It shouldn't even be that complicated to do - each space only has to remember if anyone's been through in the last 5 days.

Great idea! Would make the scouting ability really worthwhile! Imagine the feeling of finding fresh prints in the soil, knowing that the enemy has passed not long ago. Could cause problems for inferior heroes, though, if there was no way they could escape without the superior hero knowing exactly where he went because of the tracks. Maybe a stealth skill would make prints harder to find?

That IS a good idea! And there should be footprint objects in the editor so there would be some fooling around!

Definitely yes!
The skill for spoting tracks would be scouting and the one for covering your own tracks could be stealth or logistics, or perhaps both...

If there will be one it should be logistics - with army. and, of cource, stealth alone (what's the use in it when the enemy san see your footsteps coming towards the castle?)

the tracks should not last very long and you shouldn't be able to see them from a distance. i.e. you would only see tracks in the immediate vicinity of your hero.
or even better.. the tracks would have some strength depending on how old they are and how many creatures passed that spot. so, scouting might influence the minimum strength of tracks that you can see. if the tracks can be seen from a few steps away, the strenth of tracks might depended on how many steps away they are from your hero. i.e. with scouting you would see weaker tracks that are further away. or maybe the strength of tracks that you leave would have some random and depend on terrain. so it would be possible to loose the tracks on some terrain, and the tracks would be easy to follow on snow. no tracks on water, of course.
the only problem is that it should be implemented in a way that it doesn't slow down the gameplay and get annoying. imagine many tracks on the ground and a dialog popping up each time you notice a track. on the other hand, otherways you might have to move more slowly not to miss any important tracks. well, if you have to be attentive about tracks, it might make some bit more boring moments a bit more interesting, but maybe it might be exhausting and boring to the extreme to look out for tracks while your hero moves. maybe the discovered tracks would remain visible on the map without a hero for the rest of the day.
also, i wonder what tracks would look like on the adventure map. i know they should look good, but in what way culd they be made look good?

3do are good with the adventure map, so I trust them with a good set of tracks.(Not applying to the creatures, though).
This brings another idea which though it isn't directly related with this topic, still has something to do with it.
It's the problem of weather in the game. Some rain could wipe the tracks away, right? So they might introduce the weather in some days.It could also influence other aspects, such combat or movement on rough terrain.

Ok, this is an interesting idea, but I see a couple of problems.
First: On many maps, there will be areas that will be travelled over quite a bit. These would soon be covered with footprints, so how would you get any useful information at all out of it?
Second: Certain terrains just don't lend themselves to leaving tracks. Lava flats and paved roads spring to mind. On the other hand, an army pushing through the snow can be considered to be leaving a big "We went this way" sign.
So, how would you address these problems?

This sounds like a very good idea. However, the implementation of this idea would be a little hard. Like UnkaHaakon said before, there are some places where there would be no footprints. In addition, also said earlier, it would be troublesome if everyones' footprints for 5 days showed up on the map. Maybe they can work it in with the 3D engine in HMM5 or HMM6. =)

So, how would you address these problems?
1. Areas with that much heavy traffic, you shouldn't expect to get any usefull info out of.
2. Terrain would have to be taken into account, hard surfaces woulnd't leave much trace, soft would be obvious. Of course, while snow might be very obvious for a while, the tracks would likely last a shorter time there.
Not really sure what I think of it, but it would be interesting.

lol, you are right.. i should probably try to write it shorter:
let's say there's sth like strenth of tracks.
1) things that increase strength of tracks: size of the army (i would prefer total health points as large creatures leave stronger tracks).
2) things that decrease strength of tracks: hard surface of the terrain. on the contrary, on soft surfaces like snow or sand there should be clear tracks.
3) things that weaken tracks with time (tracks should disappear in a few days): mobility of the surface particles (lol). i.e. tracks would weaken and disappear faster on snow, sand, and ultimately they should disappear instantly on water.
========
also, i think the tracks should only be visible near your hero, so that you cannot see far away tracks. scouting helps to see weaker tracks. so.. if some tracks are a few steps away from your hero, they cannot be seen so clearly (kind of get weaker), and a hero with weak scouting might not be able to see them.
