It must have sounded crap, because just look at the quality of the speech in games from the early 90s. Non-existent!

16-bit PCM is the most widely used format even today (24-bit and 32-bit ONLY FOR PRODUCTION STAGE, otherwise the noise is below the -80 dB scale in 16-bit, hardly noticeable). I think you meant 8-bit, right?
In pre-rendered movies, you only have two things:
1) a sequence of images to draw on screen (VERY cheap cost in terms of performance, IF not compressed). If your computer can draw a full-screen image, it can draw a movie as well.
2) a soundtrack, with everything mixed in one BIG sound. Speech, sound effects, etc... are just one single sound in movies, one big one. You don't need any "mixing" because all the things are pre-calculated and pre-encoded in the movie. Since it's not interactive (a movie that is).

The resolution of the screen or movie. If the full screen was 320x200 back then, there is hardly any point in making a movie with higher resolution. And obviously, even today, you can STRETCH the encoded movie to full screen. Say, I can put a 320x200 movie into my full screen 1024x768 by stretching (but will of course be SLOWER than in 320x200, but today it's more than enough).

Just download the vids from youtube or download the whole games. They aren't too big either, well, diablo 2 is four cds but only download the cinematics cd.
Maybe you should do the subtitles too. They are great in vokials vid.

Still, I. We if we don't use MM4-5 videos, we shoud use the MM 6-8 ones. You cannot call them "Slide show" videos.

Strange. It downloads all right with me. Maybe a short server problem? But if it still refuses to work here's what I did. Just change all the '.' in the seconds to ','.
Youtube doesn't support subtitles but you can burn them into the film. If you don't know how here's a link. I know that way works. I have burned subtitles to a few movie and done fine.
Well you can slice and dice the cinematics a bit and if you get subtitles then little slow parts won't be a problem.

Look at it Unfortenetly Movie Maker doesen't accept videos downloaded from YouTube, so I cannot burn sublites to it, and YouTube doesen't accept sublites.

I tried that program but it doesn't seem to work with .wmv, the format Windows Movie Maker creates. Converting it into .avi will lower the quality even further (as if YouTube doesn't have a bad quality already) and I don't even know how to convert it. There's also the problem of downloading the cinematic... can you give me a link to "Diablo 2 - Cinematic 3 - Mephisto's Jungle" movie? That's the only one I think could work nicely.

What format exactly does the WMM use?
I know it worked fine with vokials vid and no loss in quality.
Might it be a codec problem? I needed this codec to get it working with vokials file.
As for that video, do you mean this? The same video that I had in mind from diablo.

Yes, that's the Vid. But I was hoping to have a link to the REAL cinematic, not the YouTube one (because YouTube has bad quality). And I hope it's in .avi or something like that so I can add subtitles

Couldn't find the original bink videos from anywhere but if you want I could sent it to you through MSN. Or a converted .avi version. You can download the cinematics cd through torrents and get all the videos from there (they are packed in an mpq file).
If you want me to send the file to you just PM me.
Oh and what format does the moviemaker use?

The Bink video or Avi would be great.
I don't think I want to download the whole CD though
And Windows Movie Maker can use any kind of file Windows Media Player can read, but when you save the movie it's always .wmv (Windows Media Video)
However, if I have the bink file (I can convert it to avi) or avi, then I can add the subtitles before I use Windows Movie Maker to cut some things. This way there'll be no format issues
