Should stacks retaliate at half strength?
According to an interview stacks in Heroes 4 will retaliate at full strength (ie if 20 dragons attack 200 dwarves inflicting enough damage to destroy 80 of them all 200 will retaliate) the reason being that battles in Heroes 3 were often won by the side which struck first (Particularly when hero with one fast troop would cast expert haste.) The Heroes 3 system gave too much of an advantage to initiative but the current system seems to negate it almost entirely. Another feature which could be added is unlimited retaliation for all stacks. This could be scaled (50% for the first attack, 40% for the second and so on) so that concentrating your attacks on a single unit would still have its tactical rewards while the cheap technique of sacrificing a single unit to absorb a powerful stacks entire retaliation would be curtailed (although not eliminated entirely since it would still be possible to absorb the first and most powerful retaliation in that manner).

I think it is like this, when for example a black dragon attacks a gnoll, they strike at each other at the same time, therefore there is no real retaliation. I have always thought that it was a stupid system in the previous games, where a creature just stand passive until it is his turn. If a dragon attacks the gnoll should attack at the same time, it makes much more sense. Even if the dragon is faster, it must come to the gnoll right, and when it is there, the gnoll can attack as well.

Should stacks retaliate at half strength?
i like the new idea for the hmm4 but i like the old too
i think that the two can be mixed - for example if you attack with a flying unit the stacks can retalitate at half strength and if you attack with flying a flying unit than the retalitation is at full strenght..or something like that

it seems to me you'll be, once again, more relying on offensive magic, as you don't want your precious units to be slaughtered. Which will lead to a major disadvantage for the stronghold... (I guess)

I think there should be a difference in the retaliation of different troops. Some should be more offensive and do more damage when atacking.Others should be very tough on defence and inflict more damage when standing ground than atacking.
