Well Skills are usually things like Crafting, Setting Traps, Searching, How well you fight, etc. While abilities are more "special" things, like Darkvision, immunities, etc.

But this is just IMO.

Ahh... so skill is the fighting-discipline that the character is trained in, and abilities is the special techniques that the character uses in battle?

Or, if you played any D&D games (NWN, Baldur's Gate, etc) you can think as the Skills as the skills and abilities as the feats

Here's my character

Character Name: Evelan (He has no last name, except for his old Naga-clan’s name, which he couldn’t care less about.)
Race: Elf
Sex: Male
Description: Evelan is an Elf of average length; he is muscular but not bulky. He has long blonde hair and blue eyes.
Setting: Ashan

Introduction:

Dawn had just arrived, and the only darkness that lingered was that of the trees’ shadows. The light sneaked through the leaves and illuminated the road on which Evelan walked. A small breeze chased his back as he walked closer to the village.

He was already aware of the group of scouts that followed him, but figured that this day was far too beautiful to spray with blood, although he still kept his right hand’s fingers clinched around the white Silksword attached to his belt.

Their movements were quick but not smooth enough to escape Evelan’s eyes; he counted them to be at least 5, dressed in black robes and heavily armed. As he reached the village’s gates a voice emerged from the road behind him, telling him to stop.

"Another challenger I guess? My arms are tired from defeating all those excuses for warriors…"

He turned around and faced the human soldiers that had followed him, his predictions had been right; there were 5 of them, with the Griffin Empire’s symbols on their chests and shoulders. A man who seemed to be their leader was the first to break the silence.

"This village is under our protection, we’ll not let you pass."

"Is that so? I was just looking for a place to sleep but if you want to fight, be my guest…" Evelan stood motionless before them. He smiled behind his long, blonde hair, these men were already horrified. He reached for his sword and unsheathed it slowly, caressing the blade with his fingertips.

"Do you know why this blade lacks a guard?" The soldiers answered his question with raising their weapons higher; they knew this man well enough to respect him, this only made Evelan’s smile wider.

"It’s because I’ve never had to parry strike in my whole life…"

Suddenly he was behind them; the first soldier was cut in half before having a chance to react, and in the same time as the soldiers acknowledged his position, he was gone again. Their fellow soldier died in seconds, the blade had cut him apart by the stomach, and the blood loss had been severe. The remaining soldiers formed a circle with their weapons ready. The leader was furious:

"Where the hell are you?! Show yourself coward!"

"Coward? Ever heard of tactics?" He was there again, his words sounded as though he was inches from them, and he was. Evelan stood in the middle of their circle with his blade sheathed. A soldier carelessly reacted by swinging his sword at him, Evelan simply dodged and the soldier’s blade passed into the leader’s head. The second attack came from Evelan, who sliced their feet off in the same movement as he drew his blade. The 3 survivors fell to the ground and screamed in pain, holding their stumps to stop the blood flow.

"Tell me… do you feel like you’ve learned something today?" He reached inside his clothing and pulled out a white blanket, which he used to wipe the blood from his sword with. The soldiers just kept screaming and crawled as far away from him as possible.

"Oh, still not very talkative are we? I’ll spell out your mistakes then, and in the same time explain why you three are still alive. Your first mistake was maybe not yours, but the stupid, merciless kingdom you work for, sending five soldiers to face me and all of you are this inexperienced?" He sheathed his sword and sat down on the ground, before pulling an apple out which he began to eat. He continued to talk with his mouth full of fruit.

"Two, a direct melee assault is never the answer, but then again, most of you humans rely on pure power… Anyway, if you three manage to get help before dying, you may consider it a victory on your part. At least you’ve learned something, think positive!" The three soldiers had already crawled out of earshot, but Evelan had continued talking.

"By Shalassa, teaching is hard…"

Background:

A young child lied at the beach; his hair was long and blonde, his clothes old and worn, his body was wounded and tired. It was unknown for how long he had been there, but he would surely have died if he hadn’t been found by an unusual rescuer. While the Naga are secretive and doesn’t often show themselves to others, they are not without mercy.

The boy was taken to their hidden temples and was healed by their sorcerers. This proved to be a difficult task, the boy’s body was completely massacred, nearly all of his bones had been crushed and his left arm was only hanging in a short bit of flesh.

Fortunately, Shalassa must have had her eyes on him that day, the boy went through a miraculous recovery, and woke up with his body fully restored; his mind however, had suffered amnesia. Without name or origin, the Naga named the boy Evelan, meaning “spirit of the water” in the Elven language.

Other Naga looked upon Evelan as a mistake; this non-Naga would surely bring devastation to their harmony. Evelan couldn’t care less about anything, the combination of amnesia and lack of people to trust had turned him into a cold, quiet person. Healers and Sorcerers desperately tried to bring his memory back, but the amnesia seemed to be irreversible, at least by the means of magic. Evelan spent his days sitting at his room, staring into nothingness, no purpose, no one to talk to, his life had no meaning. The Naga who had saved Evelan had noticed his deep despair, past experience told him that children aren’t meant to think that much; they need something to do to keep their minds occupied. The Naga took Evelan as his apprentice and a new world opened to the young boy.

The way of the blade was Evelan’s answer to life; he claimed that he could actually hear the spirits of old swordsmen talking to him during his fights. Other Naga would have deemed the boy as crazy, but Evelan’s master, being heavily religious, took this as a sign from the gods. It took 26 years for Evelan to surpass his master. (Remember that Elves age very slowly)

Evelan still wasn’t accepted by the Naga however, most still saw him as an annoyance. Evelan didn’t care about gaining their respect, the only respect he needed was from those stronger than him.

Seeing that the temple no longer had anyone who could match his sword skills, Evelan laid his sword to rest and tried to join the priests of Shalassa. While the normal Naga were prejudicial about Evelan, they were nothing when compared to the elder priests of the temple.

At first, they openly refused to train Evelan, ignoring his skills completely. Evelan was stubborn however; he wouldn’t let some old geezers ignore his potential, which he actually told them. The priests became furious and sent the temple guards on Evelan. This was the first time that Evelan used his skills in a true battle, and a Naga temple is yet to see such bloodshed. Evelan killed 7 of the guards before the priests cried for him to stop; they accepted him for as long as he didn’t kill anymore of their minions. This didn’t exactly improve Evelan’s reputation; he had not only gained the people’s respect, but also their fear.

Evelan stayed calm during his years with the priests, and was introduced to pretty much everything that their magic had to offer. He had a talent for the more destructive areas, but he was bad in the healing arts. After years of training, he deemed healing as unnecessary and vowed to never be hit by a weapon.

Evelan was now adult and the strongest warrior in his region. He immediately set his eyes on the world outside the great temple, there had got to be someone who could teach him something out there. This was unexpected to the Naga, they had thought that he would stay there forever; their secrets could not be spread in the outside world, Evelan needed to die.

They ambushed him just at the gates; four archers fired their enchanted arrows at him. Evelan raised a wall of ice and blocked the arrows, the wall then shattered and turned into a barrage of ice spikes flying through the archers’ surprised faces, this was surprising to Evelan too, seemed as if his training with the priests had been effective. The Naga weren’t done yet, every able soldier was sent to kill Evelan. Most of these were just simple Naga without particular skill; they fell fast to Evelan’s blade. Evelan’s old master proved to be the biggest challenge, he had improved along with Evelan, but his skills were far from his apprentice's level. They fought for a few minutes before Evelan froze his master’s tail to the ground before decapitating him in a single strike.

The remaining Naga fled from the temple, Evelan stood alone in the centre of the city. The spirits of old warriors had screamed in pride during the battle, the feeling was addictive. They still spoke to him, something about a sacred altar in the dungeons. Evelan remembered the dungeons beneath the temple, but he had never discovered any altar, he felt that these voices could be trusted and went to look.

Indeed, in the deepest parts of the dungeons was an altar illuminated by a magic light. There was a sarcophagus placed on the altar, the voices cried for him to open it. An old skeleton of a Naga was in the sarcophagus; its hands were clinched around a strange, white silksword with a scabbard in the same colour. This blade was different from others, it had no guard to block strikes with, and it was incredibly light. As he grasped the hilt, the voices stopped. This blade was truly something special; he carefully placed his old sword in the hands of the dead Naga and closed the sarcophagus.

With this weapon, he would search Ashan for knowledge. As he killed an enemy, the spirits of dead warriors told him their secrets. His knowledge and power would grow for as long as there were opponents worthy of his blade.

Every corner of Ashan would soon fear the white swordsman named Evelan.

Gear: His only weapon is a white, guard-less Silksword named Silverstream. He wears no armour, only a long vest that wouldn’t stop a direct hit. His weapon’s scabbard is actually also a weapon, this is explained later.

Skills: Evelan is trained in a “strike and sheath” swordstyle used by Naga; it is extremely fast and deadly, and coupled with Evelan’s godlike speed he often lands nothing but killing strikes. Although Evelan seems to have nearly no means to guard a strike, he is well prepared once he meets a worthy opponent. His blade’s scabbard is made of wood on the outside, but the core is made of pure shadowsteel from the depths of Ygg-Chall, if he is forced to block a blow, Evelan will use the scabbard, a devious tactic that is hard to predict.

Abilities: Not much is known about Evelan’s special abilities, since he haven’t really needed to use them yet. These are abilities that have been confirmed:

Evelan has deep knowledge in Naga magic and is able to bend water to his will.
The times that he has used this ability he has created shields of ice and hurled frostspikes through enemies, just the fact that he is using ice proves his knowledge in Naga magic, as ice is a most difficult thing to create.

During a short but bloody battle in the Sylvan realm, Evelan ripped four swordsmen apart with his Silksword while standing 30 feet away. It is possible that since air and water is so closely tied, Evelan is able to use the momentum in his sword thrusts to bend wind to his will too.

Weaknesses: Evelan is completely confident in his abilities and is known to judge every enemy before they have even started fighting; his flawless victories have left him overconfident.

The fact that he doesn’t wield armour also leaves him extremely vulnerable once a blow hits him.

I would accept a judge panel, but I will not be one of the judges.  Staying totally neutral.  Would even be ok with the entrants voting, but then would not have a poll.  They would have to post who they vote for, and could not vote for their own entry.
