Well, the most simple solution would be a quest guard that requires creatures that you can only buy from the town. Other solutions depending on how specific your map is up to this point:
- You could have summon boat available only in that town (until that point in the game), and need to cross water to continue.
- If you have no resources, the daily income from the town could be required to pass (even better if there's a resource silo that generates the resources for the quest guard).
- If there's a fight for the town and you know how much XP the player has at that point, the experience from the fight could be enough to push you to a specific level, so that can also be a quest guard.

Lack of heroes 3 default scripting is sad, we don't have those problems in h4

@gnollking Thanks, I already have towns of that kind but hidden water hex and Waterwalk spell are perfect.

How is decided which hero is shown as starting hero when a faction has more then one? I know it's not necessarily the most powerful but I don't guess what it is.

The name, specialty and portrait for each of the starting heroes are actually stored in the binary map file, but sadly there's no way to modify them in the normal map editor. You would need to directly change the bytes. I found this out just recently, as I've been working on my own map editor, which can already handle many of these unusual requests.

Thx. So, neither the order they are placed on the map nor if they are in garrison or not affects that?

I tried for a little while to change stuff like that but did not find a reliable way to affect it, no. It is very easy if you read the map file byte by byte and parse all the data though . You can make the starting heroes look like anything you want, doesn't even have to be heroes actually available in the map.
Btw, I don't think this is the right thread for this .

It appears they go in ascending order of their IDs.
