I heard the same about Germany, it seems insane to me. Half the acting is in intonation, emphasize of dialogue, the accents can have sociological significance, not to mention all the puns, word play, local jokes etc only making sense in original language. Only children movies get dubbed here in cinema, even digital tv stations have a subtitle option.

True, however french do it very well, hiring real actors, working a lot on voice and match. Check Gollum in french, not bad at all.

Well, yes, it's not bad but LotR is fantasy world, you said you were watching Analyze This the other day, now in there, De Niro has very characteristic intonation, besides the English he speaks reflects a certain neighborhood, him and Crystal come from total different social backgrounds and one of the instruments to underline this is the difference of the way they speak, how can you identically transfer that in dubbing? It's like translating poetry, it's of course good since you cant learn to read in all world languages but something's always lost during the process. So in cinemas, at least some sessions should be in original language for audiences who want to hear the real thing.

I think everything is in subtitles in Turkey because of budget. Subtitles are cheap, but dubbing involves hiring and using voice actors for every single film or episode that needs translation. France & Germany can afford it.

However, I 110% agree with you that subs are better by a large margin. Dubbing is a sign of laziness on behalf of the audience imo. For reasons I don't fully understand, I think I'm actually often more immersed in movies/series in non-English with subtitles than I am with stuff in English. Maybe it's because the native language makes it more removed from my everyday life, that I can slip into the world better and just enjoy it. I also like having text at the bottom because even in English there's occasionally something I don't understand or pick up on as well than if there were text on the screen for me to read.

I think it's more like matter of tradition, I mean, digital cinema channels have optional dubbing, so it's not like they didnt pay for the dubbing expenses.

Well, it's a good tradition then.

Most non-English media in the States is dubbed. Fortunately I can usually switch to subs.
