Request for a sound mod?

I'm sorry if the question is dull, but ... can someone make a mod which changes the H5 in-town structure build sound to the old, glorious sound from H3? Or at least tell me how to do it...

That's a dang good question.  Is it possible to pull a sound file out and replace it with a renamed sound file from H3?

Would be interesting to see NCF creatures come out with their own action/happy sounds as well.

Yes, it is possible, if you have the .wav files

I thought that most of the HOMM3 sounds were in MP3 and not in WAV?

Well I don't have it, only HoMM 5, so I can't know

But it would be really strange to be all sounds in mp3

Why would it be strange? I have seen it in some games before. But WAV are better than MP3 to have as sound in games. I might be wrong though and the sounds for HOMM3 might be in WAV files.

Of course many games have MP3, for music. But mp3 for all sounds is strange, I have never seen it...

I think MP3 is slow, and playing a lot of them (like creature sounds, etc) will have an impact on performance. That's why it's usually limited to music, I think.

Actually, I think WAV would be slower. It contains frequencies that are unable to be heard by humans, which is one of the reasons why WAV are big in size. MP3 isn't slow at all actually. It's a compressed sound format, doesn't contain any of the unheard frequencies in it. It might be slow if you have a really poor computer.

Hmm, the decoding might be slow.

If you have a very slow hard drive, sure, mp3 is faster since it's smaller. But if you have a slow processor, mp3 is a lot slower than wav

But there is a reason why mp3 is used only on music, I don't know what. It can be speed or something else...

If you have a slow processor than MP3 will play faster since it doesn't contain the unheard sounds.

And MP3 is mainly used in music mainly because of the exact same reason, it has no unheard sounds in it, which makes it faster and much smaller in size. But it is slightly decreased in quality. WAV is the best quality sound format that there is.

MP3 isn't faster LOL. It is smaller, but the codec is very complex, and it takes a while to decompress.

If you mean hard disk access, then it "might" be faster because it has less to load, but for the processor, you'll need quite a few Mhz to waste on decoding the .mp3 to uncompressed wav (after all, you give uncompressed sound to the sound card), so the decompression is an EXTRA step your processor needs to do.

For processing, uncompressed PCM (.wav is just an encapsulated format, it can have compression as well, like IMA ADPCM, so .wav itself is not a codec) is the fastest because it virtually has no processing what-so-ever, apart from giving it to the sound card.

With .mp3 you'll need a LOT of processing first. With VBR (variable bit rate) .mp3s it gets a lot slower -- much slower than for example Ogg Vorbis which is also VBR. .mp3 is a very complex codec.

Oh come on. Did you need to quote the damn post that was right above yours?

Well MP3 is faster overall because it is a format that can be played on most systems, whereas WAV is a Microsoft Windows/DOS format so it might be faster on Windows systems. Be considering you probably haven't tried any other systems, I guess you wouldn't know that would you?

Anyway, I think we are going too off-topic for this thread.

To recome to the discussion (), I will say that.
For the NCF creature with new sound, it is done : I innoved in this. My wisps play the sounds of Warcraft III Wisps, and it works fine.
If you give me the sounds you want to change, I can easily replace the Homm5 ones by Heroes III ones.
Give me the file, in wich format you want (while it is a sound format ), I 'll convert it in wav then release the MOD

The Heroes III music is in MP3, while all other sounds are .wav - even the campaign speech dialogues.  Now stop your pointless format bickering

I can easily extract files from Heroes III, so let me know specifically which sounds you need and I'll upload them.

Ok here's a short tutorial about how to integrate any wav file (sound) into H5.

Step 1. Rename the wav file to a specific pattern and place it in a specific folder.

Like this:
XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX
(   8      4    4    4       12)

BUT replace those X's with a hexadecimal number. For example, the first sound would be named 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000

Here's a list of the first seventeen sounds (how their name should be like):
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000002
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000003
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000004
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000005
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000006
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000007
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000008
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000009
00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000000A
00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000000B
00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000000C
00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000000D
00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000000E
00000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000000F
00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000010

I hope you get the pattern...

Now, after you rename it, place it in "bin\Sounds" directory

Step 2. Find out the .xdb file for your sound.

In case of creatures, the sounds are in their animation files. You'll find out in an animation .xdb a <Sound> tag, which points to the creature's sound .xdb file.

In case of Town sounds, you'll have to open the "Sounds\_(Music)\TableRaceMusic.xdb" file. Inside you'll see different sound tags for each faction (<MagicGuildSound>, <TownHallSound>, <MarketplaceSound>, etc). These point to the sound file.

Step 3. Edit the sound .xdb file to point out to the .wav file you just inserted.

Open the sound file you found earlier, and modify its <uid> value to point to your newly added .wav file.

That means, for the first sound you added, write <uid>00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000</uid>, and so on...

@william: .mp3 is not faster at all, in any way of thinking for the "processor". .wav is a format that ENCAPSULATES codecs -- in itself, it is very fast, because all it has to do is to encapsulate (that is like a container) -- that is very fast. The actual SOUND is stored in CODECS, which .wav contains. Most people when they refer to wav refer to the codec PCM, which is uncompressed, and is universal. An example of a compressed codec is IMA ADPCM. The PCM is the fastest because it requires virtually no processing, you just need to send the sound data to the sound card (not the whole wav! you don't send the container, you send the sound in it).

To clear this up

You really don't know when to let it go do you? This thread was heading into the direction it was originally going to take but you had to steer it off course again. Maybe you should just make that as a HCM and I can delete this post and you delete yours.

I accidentally put my H3SoD cd into my cd player and it had 20+ tracks of the different music from battle to towns. Burned a copy of it to a disc and I listen to it occasionally while I drive.

The vampire attack sound from H2 is second only to the zombie's "obscene phone call" attack sound from H2.

Back to the topic; Even if you can't find the files, you could always try to isolate the sounds and record them with a program like Cool Edit Pro/Adobe Audition or Audacity(Free).
