Stardock's Not-Master-of-Magic 2
http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/10/15/stardock-updates-its-game-plans-releases-teaser-shot-of-fantasy/
Yes, there it is: Master of Magic 2, except Sony wanted too much money for the title, so it will be called different. First official screenshot is out. Public beta in spring-mid 2009.
Now, with GalCiv II and Sins of Solar Empire Stardock has established itself as a producer and developer of first class strategy games, and I have high hopes that we'll see something worth the wait for.
Here's a recent Brad Wardell interview where he's speaking about it:
http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=995&page=2
This sums it up quite well:
Strategy Game 2010 ("Not Master of Magic")
It has been known for years that Stardock has designs on the long-dormant Master of Magic franchise, but complications with license owner Atari have stymied the developer's attempts at a true sequel. As CEO Brad Wardell told Gamasutra in 2006, "We were able to agree on the money, so we thought everything was set, then their legal guys got involved, and that's where it stalled."
But the company's MoM-themed project is still in the works minus the license, according to today's report (teaser picture inset). Referred to as Strategy Game 2010 and Not-MOM, the game is "a turn-based strategy game that supports random map generation, integrated modding, city building, unit design, tactical combat, multiplayer, incredibly powerful magical spells, and much more" and is scheduled to enter public beta by next June.

Never played the first even though some random guy gave me a copy of it. As to the title, it reminds me of the situation with F.E.A.R. 2 a little bit.

Not playing it was probably a mistake.
I mean, for example there are 5 types of advanced magic plus one regular (movement spells for example ) in this game:
Life Magic
Death Magic
Chaos Magic
Nature Magic
Sorcery Magic (Illusions, for example )
Does that ring a bell somehow?
If the copy you got is a good one it will include pdfs of the rules. If not, check at abandonia.com for them. In any case thumb through the pages a bit. If your mouth won't start watering as soon as you see the advances chart, I don't know anything about gaming.
In any case, thumbing through the pages you'll see VIRTUALLY all fantasy turn-based strategy games out there with a diplomacy system, a magic research system and whatnot. The downside of the game is, that it was still a dos-game which means it's graphically ugly and not up to any standard.
A 2010 remake of that game, if well-done, would be something like the holy grail of turn-based fantasy strategy gaming.

I remember downloading the first game from abandonia some months ago. A great game indeed. It's similiar to Age of Wonders in many ways, or rather AoW is similiar to it. Diplomacy, Civ-like town management and income distribution, magic and magic development travelling heroes, different races with sifferent bonuses... this game had it all really.

Agreed.

Yes the game :
Is great and has great potenial of possiblities and strategies because you can't have all spells so you have to secialize or choose diferent routes to victory.
I would love to seee the second part.
Hey are there any more similar games to MOM

JJ, which of the two games you mentioned is better? I've been looking for a good space strategy game for a while - haven't played a good one since MOO2.

How about Master of Orion? It's the space version of Master of Magic.

Played it, hence the "haven't played a good one since MOO2". It was a great one - that's what I'm looking for!
